Finding Zen By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

I recently found out that my yoga studio, the one I have been frequenting for the last several years, will be closing come the end of February. Sure, there are other studios, other forms of meditation that can be explored; but this was my studio, the one I had come to regard as a sanctuary of sorts, a respite from the oftstressful daily grind. When I began taking classes there, some three or four years ago, my goal was to attend one, two – even three – sessions per week, at all different levels, in an effort to explore this newfound hobby. I had originally decided to look into the practice after

“retiring” from dancing for the previous 20 years, and determined that yoga would be the perfect combination of strength and conditioning, balance and relaxation, that I needed. Of course, my grand plans eventually dwindled down to about once a week, as I found a regular class that I loved. Every Wednesday (or as many as I could manage to make it to), I would look forward to those 75 minutes of guided technique and mental cleansing. Certainly, anyone can undertake the basic yoga stretches and breathing techniques on his/her own; but there is definitely something about a structured class which brings a whole new level to

the practice. And so, come March, I will need to find a new venue to attend, a new haven to explore this ancient ritual, which has so very many benefits in the modern world. How glad I am that I ventured into that particular studio all those years ago, and how very appreciative I am of the community of fellow “yogis” that I have come to know and respect. Here’s hoping that I find a new home for my hobby, one as welcoming and fulfilling and full of inspiration. ‘Til then, I shall savor these remaining weeks in my old familiar studio, surrounded by familiar faces; and I shall take a deep breath and appreciate all the goodness yoga has brought to my life.

We all deal with increases in expenses all the time. We recently learned that the minimum wage was increased to $10.00 per hour in our area, and it will continue to increase to up to $15.00 per hour by 2021. These types of increases are a result of decisions from our elected officials. On the surface, many people think this is good and fair; but when you delve deeper, you may find that it might not be so good after all. All businesses, including small businesses, must now figure out a way to deal with these increased costs. They now must decide how much of these costs their business can absorb and how much must now be passed on to the consumer. Many businesses are

still dealing with the large increases in their health care costs. Many businesses will be forced to eliminate positions, as well as minimize some of their services. Ultimately, it is the consumer who will be adversely affected by all of this. Let’s all hope for better days ahead! We have an opportunity with our new administration to cut the size of government and its excessive spending and waste. We have an opportunity to limit government control and waste in many areas such as healthcare, education, student loans and social service benefits. Able Americans should be in control of their own destinies, working and earning their own way in this world, and not

being enabled to rely on government handouts which ultimately become yet another cost to all of us hard working taxpayers. Government assistance is meant for those who are truly in need of and deserving of the help. These less fortunate Americans are the only ones who should be allowed to benefit from these costly government services. So, if you find yourself having to pay more for a product or service, or you seem to be waiting longer and longer for assistance in places of business or of government service, realize where this all started, and who is paying for all the wasteful government spending. It is US, THE TAXPAYERS.

The Diocese of Rockville Centre has completed a new center to house the diocesan Dept. of Education at Holy Trinity Diocesan High School in Hicksville. New offices, conference rooms, and training facilities were incorporated into 12,200 square feet of the south wing of the school. The renovation incorporated extensive improvements for instructional technology, so that the new home of the department can truly be a resource for all parish, regional, and diocesan schools as they work to enhancing the values-centered programs of excellence throughout the diocese. The center is also the home for a new series of meeting called ‘Making Connections’ where parents are invited to meet with the Superintendent for coffee on Saturday mornings.

Antibullying Program mandating all schools to report bullying to the state. Cyberbullying encompasses online harassment through texting, gaming and posting to social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter, with posting of bullying videos online. There is also sexting, where inappropriate and/ or nude photos are sent via online services, admitted to by 54% of teens, which is illegal. Teens need to understand once they hit send, the photos are out in cyberspace forever, leading to a potential lifetime of problems when applying for college or seeking employment. Parents and caretakers need to be on the alert to potential bullying. Signs include changes in mood, behavior, sleep,

appetite, unexplained drop in grades, withdrawal from previously enjoyed activities and unexplained drop in grades. Suicide can happen when a number of factors are considered and bullying pushes the victim over the edge. Have that conversation with your child if you suspect bullying; it can be embarrassing to the child to admit anything is wrong. Contact your school officials for assistance and find online resources like www.licab.org, cyber specialist Katie Greer at www.klgreer.com or search Google for bullying. This applies also if you suspect your child is the bully; this is many times a result of problems at home, such as divorce and other social situations.

Out of this World The Farmingdale School District recently sent students and teachers from Howitt Middle School to SPACE CAMP® at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Hunstville, Alabama. Sixth grade teachers Ms. Cuiffo and Mr. Marzillier were part of the Space Academy for Educators program, designed as a professional development program to help teachers experience science, technology engineering and math (STEM) in action to enhance lesson

planning. The teachers experienced astronaut simulators and took a virtual tour into space to save the International Space Station. Trainees also followed lesson plans based on official NASA material and received content to pass on to their students in the classroom. Accompanying the teachers were two 8th grade students from Howitt Middle School, Heaven Diaz and Samantha Leroy, who were selected to

attend the Space Camp for Students program. During the seminar, the students learned about what it takes to be an astronaut, and how astronauts conduct scientific experiments in zero gravity. The all-expense-paid program was part of the Farmingdale School District’s ongoing initiative to promote interest in fields related to STEM, and help train teachers using interactive hands-on activities.

The Farmingdale School District recently sent students and teachers from Howitt Middle School to SPACE CAMP® at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Hunstville, Alabama. Sixth grade teachers Ms. Cuiffo and Mr. Marzillier were part of the Space Academy for Educators program, designed as a professional development program to help teachers experience science, technology engineering and math (STEM) in action to enhance lesson

Recognition Brunch United States Air Force Captain Keith Ross of Farmingdale, and alum of the Nassau BOCES Barry Tech Aviation Program, was honored during the school’s annual Industry Advisory Recognition Brunch. The event is an opportunity for Nassau BOCES Board members, administrators, faculty and staff to thank invaluable mentors like Captain Ross for their ongoing guidance and support. Barry Tech partners with more than 800 Long Island businesses, giving students the significant advantage of on-the-job work experience under the supervision of industry specialists. The school’s industry partners help students to develop the skills necessary to

compete in the workplace. In addition to providing real-world experience, industry partners regularly visit classrooms to offer their expertise, and invite students to tour their facilities and learn about their respective businesses. At the brunch, industry partners were honored by Nassau BOCES administrators, government officials and community leaders. They were given a red carpet welcome by Barry Tech student ambassadors, and awarded with plaques and certificates thanking them for their contributions. They were also given a comprehensive tour of the state-of-the-art Joseph M. Barry Career & Technical Education Center.

But the day’s most important proceedings were when the partners met with members of the faculty and guidance department to inform the curriculum. The business leaders offered their input on new curriculum to ensure that it is up to date with the most current industry standards. “Our industry partners are crucial to the success of our students,” says Work Experience Teacher Coordinator Randi O’Moore. “They share their experiences in the field, inform our students’ education with their expertise and help them to hone their skills. They give our students a real-life look at their chosen career fields.”
