Hospitals Intensify Flu Prevention Efforts

Flu Shots And Surgical Facemasks Part Of Effort To Stem Flu Flu virus was declared prevalent by the New York State Health Commissioner on December 6, 2023, and hospitals on Long Island and throughout the Hudson Valley are taking additional steps to prevent the spread of flu, including enhanced efforts to vaccinate all employees and distribution of surgical facemasks. Worn by employees, masks offer a physical barrier to flu transmission. This is a comprehensive endeavor to protect patients, visitors, and employees from exposure to the flu virus. A declaration of flu prevalence by the health commissioner triggers the

Farmingdale State College (FSC) announced the addition of two new electric vehicles to its campus vehicle fleet, bringing to five its total of electric (EV) or hybrid vehicles, and moving closer to its goal of going fossil fuel free by 2035. The two 2023 Nissan Leaf vehicles are four-door compact size cars and join a 2013 Nissan Leaf, a 2013 Toyota Prius, and a 2013 Chevy Volt, all of which are driven by Campus Vehicles authorized operators. The cars are branded with the FSC logo on the front doors and a “FSC Electric Vehicle” logo on the rear doors, with the motif of a globe blanketed by a leaf. A 2024 New Year’s Resolution Everyone Should Make: Get A Memory Screening With a new year upon us, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is encouraging individuals to make a new year’s resolution to get a memory screening. Regular memory screenings are an important early detection tool of potential memory problems and should be part of everyone’s health and wellness routine. AFA’s National Memory Screening Program offers free, confidential memory screenings every weekday through secure videoconference technology, with no minimum age or insurance prerequisites. Appointments can be scheduled by calling AFA at 866-232-8484 or by clicking here. “Memory screenings are important for everyone, even if they are not currently experiencing memory problems. Just as with other facets of your health, early detection of potential memory issues is critically important,” said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., AFA’s President & CEO. “Start off 2024 by making, and keeping, a new year’s resolution to get a check-up from the neck up today.” Memory screenings are simple, quick, and noninvasive, and consist of a series of questions to gauge memory and other cognitive functions. You are never too young or too old to get a memory screening,” said Donna de Levante Raphael, PhD, Director of AFA’s National Memory Screening Program. “Detecting a memory issue early rather than later gives you more opportunity to take action, which is why everyone should get memory screenings regularly.” AFA’s National Memory Screening Program provides free, confidential memory screenings every weekday through secure videoconference technology; a smartphone, tablet, computer, or any other device with an internet connection is all that’s needed. Residents & Businesses Invited To Sponsor Hero Banners To Recognize Veterans And Active Duty Personnel Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola announced that the Town is now accepting applications for the 2024 Hometown Heroes’ Community Recognition Program. This initiative recognizes the service and sacrifice of the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces – both living and deceased – who are current or former Town of Oyster Bay residents. “My Town Board colleagues and I were amazed by the outpouring of support this program has received from residents, businesses and local heroes,” said Councilman Labriola. “We are proud to return this important initiative to our communities and look forward to further recognizing our veterans, active duty

service members, and their families for their commitment to defend our freedoms and democracy.” Banners bearing the nominated individual’s name, rank, photograph and area of service will be unveiled throughout selected park facilities across the Town of Oyster Bay in the months leading up to Veterans Day in November. Any interested individual or organization who would wish to sponsor a banner can remit $75 to sponsor the production of a banner. No profit is made from this program. Once the banners are displayed, the Town will maintain the banners, and will remain on display until Veterans Day, where they will then be taken down to avoid any inclement winter weather and returned to the service family or their loved ones.
