The mission of the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation is to provide tuition assistance for families who want their children to attend a Catholic elementary school, but need financial help to make it possible. The Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation solicits donations from individuals and corporations, and allocates that money to families based on financial need. A Tomorrow’s Hope grant is awarded anonymously to the family to offset the tuition cost based on family income and expenses. Alternately, through the Tomorrow’s Hope STAR Program, specific individual students are paired off with a STAR donor on a direct one-toone basis. STAR program donors agree to contribute $2,500 a year in a donor/ student relationship that often lasts for the duration of the child’s elementary school journey. STAR donors and ‘their students’
have an ongoing dialogue and the donor gets to hear about, and participate in the academic career of a student. Since its inception in 2005, the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation has distributed more than 20 million dollars in aid to over 17,000 qualifying students. Today, the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation provides almost 2 million dollars annually that subsidizes tuitions. In some cases, schools and parishes also have scholarship funds available. Families are encouraged to speak with the Principal at the school of their choice about the options available. Five Cents, Please Seen at the local supermarket last week: a gentleman piling each one of his items into his cart, refusing to pay the 5¢ plastic bag fee that was recently passed in Suffolk County. “Nope,” he shook his head vigorously. “I’ll throw it all in my backseat and carry every single item into my house by hand if I have to.” The checkout clerk, somewhat perplexed, acquiesced. “Alright,” she replied politely. “Whatever you’d prefer - that’s why we ask if you’d like a bag.” As he rolled his overflowing shopping cart away, fellow clerks exchanged raised eyebrows and shrugged. “It’s one thing when they have a handful of items, but $300 worth of food and perishables?” She seemed incredulous. “That’s really standing on principle.”

The clerk went on to list the bizarre scenarios she had witnessed over these last several weeks - from people juggling glass bottles (an attempt which, needless to say, didn’t end so well) to the woman who insisted on cradling about 5 pounds of meat in her arms. All to save a nickel. I have to admit, I was only vaguely aware that this proposed law was set to take effect until I found myself running into the store for some last minute New Year’s Eve snacks. Only then did I see the signs warning of the impending surcharge posted at each register, plastered on every entrance and exit, along with racks of “reusable” plastic bags for sale at each counter. I did some quick math: so, if I buy an allegedly sturdier bag for 10¢ - assuming I get more than two uses out of it, I’ll be

I considered further the fact that, nearly every time I am in any sort of store but especially those of the supermarket variety - I am repeatedly amazed at the lack of, shall we say, bagging skills employed by most clerks. I invariably wind up with either 27 bags with one or two items in each, or the equally daunting 20 pound bag filled to the brim and unlikely to make it to the car without breaking, let alone up a flight of stairs into my apartment. I’ll bag my own, thanks, I always request. And now, if I’m going to pay for them, you can be sure I’ll be taking matters into my own hands. mentioned to me that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile matter because the Gospel tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him. Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. Dr. Michael Nagler and his technology committee, the event featured several technology-based vendors who shared their products with the superintendents and administrators. Vendors included Tech Trep Academy, Footsteps2Brilliance, Actively Learn, Frontier, Buncee, Legends of Learning, DecisionEd, Flipgrid, Fly Sense Vape and Bully Detector and Discovery Education STEM Connect. This was the first time that this type of technology symposium was held for Nassau County school administrators. Dr. Nagler and Superintendent of Levittown Public Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald welcomed attendees at the start of the event and explained the process. In true speed-dating fashion, superintendents and administrators rotated in groups to each vendor, where they had six minutes to hear about the technology product and ask questions. “The premise is to get as much information in a compressed amount of time as possible and then leave it to the superintendents to follow up,” said Dr. Nagler. “It gives them a taste of what’s currently out there, what’s new to the tech market and if they like it, they have the opportunity to pursue it.” In addition, culinary art students at Levittown’s Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Center provided a variety of food and dessert options for attendees to enjoy during the event. “We are very proud to host this event today,” said Dr. McDonald. “It’s a more efficient way for people to see what is out there. You also get to know the people behind the products, which is very important when you sign on for any tech system. You need to know the support is there.”

“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” … this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This non-profit reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless. After meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved by all that I learned about and saw. Lighthouse Mission is a registered nonprofit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help. Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www. LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. As a result, many couples invest a portion of their budgets into spa and beauty treatments, with many even hiring salon stylists to ensure their weddingday looks are flawless.
One way to “tress to impress” is to experiment with some color. Well-placed highlights, balayage treatments, ombre or peek-a-boo underlights can add an extra spark to a bride’s normal hairstyle. Speak with a qualified stylist about what you plan to achieve with a wedding-day look, so color can be applied correctly.
Retro glamour
Brides may want to harken back to an era when glamour reigned supreme. Replicate one of the short styles of the 1940s or 1950s, paying homage to Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Lauren Bacall or Judy Garland.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Town Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone announced today that the Town will once again welcome the LI Blues, as well as two other hockey teams, to the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage for the 8th Annual Town of Oyster Bay Long Island Blues Winter Classic slated for Saturday, January 27th. This special event showcases hockey players with special needs enjoying a game they love. Residents are welcome to attend and admission is FREE. Faceoff for the first of four games is at 3:30 p.m. The fourth and final game is expected to conclude at approximately 7:30 p.m. “The LI Blues is an inspiring hockey program in which children and young adults with developmental disabilities play ice hockey in an accommodating setting,” said Supervisor Saladino.
