Let’s Take In Some Culture This Weekend “Give every day the chance to become the most beautiful day of your life.” - Unknown When was the last time you took in a nice play, or a concert in an intimate venue? Perhaps an art gallery showing, featuring some local up and coming artists, or a museum exhibit? I don’t know about you, but culture really feeds my soul. A weekend spent entrenched in the arts or science or history can feel akin to a mini-vacation, and makes me feel connected to my humanity and the world around me. Come to think of it, a nourishing hobby can do the same; whether it is volunteering at your local animal shelter, jewelry making, horseback riding (my personal favorite) or rockclimbing. It could be just about anything. I can’t speak for everyone, but for those of us who are often entrenched in the routine of grocery shopping, play dates, errands and preparing for the
week ahead, we can sometimes lose sight of the opportunity that each weekend holds for us. As I edit the Coming Events Around Town calendar each week for the newspaper, I see so many interesting and culturally enriching events taking place throughout Long Island. I will admit, I have been guilty of thinking, “Note to self. You have to go check this out,” and then I’ll get sidetracked and forget to go. I’ll let myself get so swept up in life that the days will get away from me. It happens to the best of us. But the twenty-four hours that we are granted each day are filled with endless promise, and we owe it to ourselves to make the most of them whenever possible. When it comes to squeezing every ounce of opportunity out of each weekday in terms of career, I’m batting a thousand. But I’ve been slacking a bit on squeezing every ounce of life and enjoyment out of the 48 hours between Friday night and Sunday night. Let’s make this a collective challenge! Each weekend, let’s
comb through What’s Happening Around Town in South Bay’s Neighbor as well as other local Long Island newspapers. Look at everything the area has to offer, from movie screenings and crafting, to classes, lectures and music events. Next time something catches your eye, stop in your tracks, make plans and get tickets, or simply make a reservation. Incidentally, you would be surprised at the amount of free activities around town. Feeling like a homebody this winter? Invite a bunch of friends over for a Saturday night potluck dinner and classic movie screening. Share laughs, memories and great food. Then take in some classic films in your living room. Maybe even break out a board game or two. Do something that will have you skipping back to work or school, or the Monday routine, with newfound vigor. I’m holding myself to this one too. Drop me a line and let me know how you made the most out of your 48 hours this weekend.

Farmingdale Nuclear Safety Provider Curtiss Right Valve Group in Farmingdale, premier supplier of critical-service safety valves for nuclear power, was honored at the Nassau BOCES Barry Tech Industry Advisory Recognition Brunch. The event was an opportunity for Nassau BOCES Board members, administrators, faculty, staff and students to honor Barry Tech’s industry partners for their ongoing guidance and support. Barry Tech collaborates with more than 800 Long Island businesses, giving students the significant advantage of on-thejob work experience under the supervision of industry specialists. The school’s industry partners help students to develop the skills necessary to compete in their chosen career fields. In addition to providing real-world experience, industry partners regularly visit classrooms to offer their expertise, and invite students to tour their facilities and learn about their respective businesses. At the brunch, Curtiss Right and other industry partners were
honored by Nassau BOCES administrators, government officials, community leaders and Barry Tech alumni. They were given a red carpet welcome by Barry Tech student ambassadors, and awarded with plaques and certificates thanking them for their contributions. They were also given a comprehensive tour of the state-of-the-art Joseph M. Barry Career & Technical Education Center. Barry Tech is a career and technical education high school that offers over 40 hands-on courses designed to help students develop the skills they need to get a step ahead in their chosen career fields. Classes are taught in a state-of-the-art facility simulating real-world work environments that meet current industry standards. Classes may be held in an airplane hangar, horse-training stable, carpentry shop or video production studio. The members of the faculty are professionals in their fields who are eager to share their experience and expertise. After completing their studies, students can attend a twoor four-year college, enter

Kicking off PARP at Northside Elementary School Northside Elementary School kicked off their Pick A Reading Partner (PARP) program at a school-wide assembly on Monday, January 14, 2019. This year’s theme is Reading Gives You The Wings to Fly. The assembly began with the Northside chorus leading the entire student body to sing “A Book Can Make You Fly,” written by music teacher Christina Cinnamo with the music from “I Believe I Can Fly.”
Then, this year’s mystery reader was revealed! It turned out to be Superintendent Paul Defendini, who enthusiastically read The Book With No Pictures to the audience of delighted elementary school students. PARP is a program designed to engage and involve parents, caregivers and other adults in fostering the love of reading in children. Students are encouraged
to participate in some type of reading experience with their partners for at least fifteen minutes a day for three weeks. January’s Charity of the Month is: PBS Community Foundation
The PBS Community Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, was established to help people with autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities and other special needs. They particularly focus on selfdetermination and full inclusion in the local community. Their mission is to help these individuals access the support and services they need to become active and productive members of the community, as well as encourage long-term planning and to support efforts towards establishing social connections and friendships in the community. For individuals with disabilities, the movement away from inadequate and segregated institutional congregate custodial care has been taking place for 40 years. Now more than ever, individuals with disabilities are seeking the opportunity to stay in their own communities and pursue their personal goals, while receiving the needed levels of support to make full community inclusion a sustainable reality. In New York State, anyone who is eligible for OPWDD Services (NYS Office For People With Developmental Disabilities) and enrolled in the Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) Waiver, can choose to selfdirect their services. As of September 30, 2018, there were 2,926 individuals enrolled in ‘Self Direction’ on Long Island. (Source: NYS OPWDD) Self-Direction is a person-centered approach that empowers individuals with developmental disabilities to create a life plan with supports that they chose, based on their unique strengths, needs and goals. It also gives the individual more control over
how funding is used to purchase needed support and services. While the number of individuals choosing to self direct their services is quickly growing, the PBS Community Foundation aims to provide support through grass roots, community based networks. The PBS Community Foundation initiatives started with Big Time Glee, a singing group that now meets twice a month in Smithtown. This group performs at various events such as Long Island Ducks games! In response to numerous requests from the Self-Directed community, the Foundation created a similar group in Nassau, which meets monthly in Bellmore. This is called the Nassau Voice. Aditionally, another initative, The Crafting Connection, meets every other week to work on different crafty projects or just to socialize and play games. More recently, Self-Directed individuals are focusing on the health of their mind and body. The PBS Community Foundation offers Yoga Without Boundaries twice a month at the Yoga Darshana Center in West Babylon. This center generously donates the space and Dan Elfawal, a certified special educator and yoga instructor, leads a free yoga class open to individuals with all abilities. Dan says the students walk away focused, calm and self confident. Through the practice of yoga, students build strength and develop coping skills, which can lead to a healthier lifestyle. Hosting Farmingdale Librarians The reading teachers at Howitt Middle School hosted two librarians from Farmingdale public library to chat with their students about the benefits of signing up for a public library card. This outreach was a way to reach children unaware of all the databases available to them, and inform them about specialty programs,
e-books, audio books, reading clubs, and more. “These sessions provided great synergy for us,” said sixth-grade reading teacher Merle Goess. “Librarians wants more children coming to the library, and we want to get more children reading.” Creating a literacy rich school environment is a top priority at Howitt Middle
School. All the reading teachers are actively working with the public library to help facilitate the signing up process for children eager to receive new library cards and/or renew expired cards. The children came up with some thoughtful questions during the sessions. They wanted to know how long they could keep a book
and about the procedure to renew it. The librarians brought some new titles for the children to consider reading, and taught them about the label system that helps them identify new and specific genres of books, so they can easily find what they’re interested in. Before the sessions wrapped up, students were encouraged to
suggest different programs they would like to see take place at the library. Among their recommendations were an emoji guessing game, a graphic novel book club, and a minute-to-win-it contest. The middle schoolers came away with the knowledge that the public library isn’t just a building
with a collection of books, but a new world of information and programs waiting to be discovered. The children were energized—and a little bit surprised— to learn that everything at the library was free! They left ready and exited to explore their library skills
