Students were granted access to the luxury boxes, locker rooms and media hubs in the arena. Registration for individuals interested in working as a lifeguard for the 2015 summer season is currently underway. The Town of Oyster Bay is now hiring lifeguards at our pools and at North Shore beaches for the upcoming season, which extends from Memorial Day through Labor Day. As there is of course a lot of work and responsibility that comes with being a lifeguard, the position is meant for those who are experienced swimmers and up for the challenge of protecting residential swimmers and beach attendees. The Snooze Button By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The snooze button. That wonderful option to roll over and drift back to sleep for just a few more minutes, or hours, apparently. Hence, why it is now 5 p.m. on deadline day and I am just beginning to formulate a column. Well, some semblance of one anyway. So what has everyone been doing this winter to keep occupied now that the holiday rush is ofﬁcially over? Catching up on a little reading, maybe? Some TV series binge watching, perhaps? I, personally, am guilty of both vices, having

made it my mission to complete the entire ﬁve volume series of Game of Thrones before the next season premiere, which… well, let’s just say, at nearly 1,000 pages per volume, is looking a bit overly optimistic at the moment. Of course, if I didn’t spend every spare hour binging on old episodes of Gilmore Girls on Netﬂix, all seven seasons of it, that would probably speed the process along, but… there’s just something about reliving the innocence of my high school and college days whilst living the madness of being an adult. (Speaking of, I don’t think people use terms like “hence”

and “whilst” quite enough, don’t you agree? A column topic for another time.) In any case, winter isn’t so bad if you know how to ﬁll your time. And if vegetating on the couch is the best option, go with it. The long, dark nights, the bonechilling temperatures… all great reasons to curl up with a giant mug of hot chocolate (with extra marshmallows) and a blanket. Just try not to let the hours get away from you, as, before you know it, the birds begin chirping and it’s time to rise and shine and do it all again. Of course, there’s always the snooze button if you need a few extra minutes.

Creative Cups To Return On March 19th at Adelphi University in Garden City, 178 original works of art will be auctioned to benefit the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program. These pieces are “Creative Cups” - ordinary bras that have been turned into folk art. The inspirations for the Creative Cups are many. Artist Richard Vaux of Lloyd Neck evoked autumn with his design “Wishful Landscape II.” Girl Scouts from Troop 3648 in Farmingdale

made “Girl Scout Cookies” to honor the memory of Girl Scout Founder Juliet Gordon Lowe, who died from breast cancer. Breast cancer survivor Joan Leondis of Garden City used many jewels for her “Life is Precious.” The amazing “Bra-alicious” by Dave Jones of East Meadow is made of welded spoons and chains. These and 174 other Creative Cups will be auctioned on Thursday, March 19th, at 6 p.m. at Adelphi University’s

University Center in Garden City. NBC’s Pat Battle, a breast cancer survivor herself, again will host the event. To date, chief sponsors are Leviton Foundation and Long Island Plastic Surgical Group. COMMANDERS SWORN IN - U.S. Coast Guard Captain Edward Cubanski, Sector Long Island Sound, swears in newly elected officers Arthur Albertsen Division Commander and Ronald Kudla Division Vice-Commander of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Division 1 First Southern Region. The ceremony was held on January 11th, at the Captain Bill’s Restaurant, Bay Shore. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is the uniformed civilian component of the United States Coast Guard. Created by an Act of Congress in 1939, the Auxiliary directly supports the Coast Guard in all missions, except military and direct law enforcement actions.
