It’s Time to Turn Our Backs on False Idols “You shall have no other Gods before me” - Exodus 20:2-3 Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, Kevin Spacey, Les Moonves... R. Kelly. Yes, I said it. We’re in quite a pickle, aren’t we? As a culture we have allowed mass media to convince us that those who become public figures in entertainment are idols to be worshipped. I know, I know... not you. You’re above it all, but let’s say for the sake of argument that most people aren’t. Fair? Following your favorite celebrities on social media, buying magazines when they grace the cover, tuning in to watch awards shows, hanging up posters on your bedroom wall as a teenager. Shall I go on? The past year or so has left society reeling with the realization that many famous people are deeply flawed and sometimes do some very bad things. But why the shock and awe, and devastation? They’re only human, many of them with severe problems. As a culture, we have a bigger problem. We’ve
allowed ourselves to worship false idols. Going back to the days of the O.J. Simpson trial that transfixed our nation, we couldn’t believe that this handsome, charismatic football superstar could actually be just a person who most likely committed a heinous crime. Did you know the construct of “celebrity” is really only about 100 years old? That’s a drop in the bucket. Prior to 1920, there were no radios in people’s homes. The first “talkie” film was around 1927, and televisions weren’t in homes until 1949. Up until the 20th century you could go to theatre, or read a book, magazine or newspaper. The media was a fraction of the size it is now, and people were community oriented. The typical family was focused on their home, their community, their church or synagogue and their neighbors. With the relatively recent constructs of record companies, movie studios, television studios and social media, executives needed to mythologize their stars in order to commoditize them. They needed to strategize ways
to make you love entertainers so you would purchase albums and movie tickets, and tune into television programs. It generates advertising and sales revenue. Don’t get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with enjoying entertainment. In fact, I believe that the arts are nourishing to the spirit and play an important role in our existence. But idol worship has led us down a murky path. In my journalistic work interviewing entertainers, I have tried to use that platform to peel away the celebrity veneer and show the person’s humanity to readers. Maybe I have succeeded at this or maybe I have failed. That is up to you to decide. You’re entitled to your opinion either way. With my son, I try to impart to him that although he can enjoy great music, theatre, film and television, the people he should be looking to as his role models are the people who touch his life on a daily basis; the people who care for him and his well being. The only being that we pray to and worship in our home is G-d. For that is as it should be.

The state level finals will be held March 2, 2019 at East Rockaway High School. “This year we invested in new technology that is faster and more powerful,” said Team Coach Ann Grady. “By qualifying for States in the first two regional tournaments of the season, the teams have a great opportunity to experiment with various designs and programs to expand the robots’ capabilities. There’s still a lot to learn, and I’m excited to see what they will be competing with at States.” Farmingdale’s robotics teams have consistently qualified for the Southern New York State VEX Championship and have advanced to the VEX World Championship (held every April) for the past four years. VEX Robotics was created by The Robotics Education & Competition Foundation. Their mission is to increase student interest and involvement in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) by engaging students in hands-on, affordable, and sustainable robotics engineering programs.

His friends whipped up some Gurr Dorito Chicken.” Ella and her dad have been hooked ever since! “This has become one of our favorite, quick meals, and we usually have it with brown rice and veggies.”

Many of you read my Living Well column each week where I shared what I have learned about living your best life. Like you, my wisdom was hard earned through years of ups and downs, and evolution. One of my major downs was years of suffering with anxiety and panic attacks. Since having my book, Journaling Fame: A memoir of a life unhinged and on the record, come out in the spring of 2017, I have come to learn just how common this is. Forty million Americans suffer with, or have suffered from, various forms of anxiety, depression, OCD and panic attacks. If you are currently struggling with this, know that you are not alone. Below is a small excerpt from my book to give you an introduction to what I went through at my worst: At 3 AM on a July 2012 morning, I lay helpless on an emergency room cot, unable to experience any emotion other than fear and the physical sensations that racked my body. My extreme levels of anxiety did not cease; my body showed me no mercy, perhaps because my racing mind did not extend that courtesy to my body. I was wrapped in a backless hospital gown and meagerly strewn blanket that had been nuked in a microwave to keep me warm. I was uncontrollably shaking and shivering from the inside out. I felt aches and pains and my eyes bulged with fright and confusion. “What is happening to
me?” I thought. As a chronic baseline anxiety sufferer my entire life, I was in the throes of the worst and most extended episode of acute anxiety I’d ever known. I was experiencing five or
safe.” You might recognize the above as obsessivecompulsive thoughts and behaviors or “magical thinking,” and you may have even experienced something resembling it. By the time I was a teenager I had graduated to the trifecta: anxiety/ panic, OCD and depression. It was also around this time that I discovered that my well of creativity, intuition and compassion ran deep. The spoken and written word became my solace, and the gift I felt I had to offer the world. My highly sensitized being may have created anxiety, but it also blossomed into an ability to connect with others in a rarefied way, and to express myself as a successful journalist and writer. This excerpt from my book was also published by the ADAA - Anxiety and Depression Association of America, with the purpose of lending my voice and support to this community. After years of asking, “Why me?” I never again have to ask that question. Through sharing my story in the media, and through speaking engagements, I have turned it around from a challenge to a gift. I feared I was dying, or worse, losing my mind and “going crazy,” a common fear among those with anxiety and panic disorder. It all started when I was seven or eight years old (the age my son is now) and I began to experience intense feelings of worry connected to my physical health. As I reached my preteen years my anxiety grew more ambitious and branched out to what we now commonly refer to as OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). After graduating from High School in 2010, Erin went on to graduate from Eastern Suffolk Boces in 2013. Once she aged out at 21 years old, she and her family chose to Self-Direct her adult services. By doing so she has been successful in accomplishing many of her personal goals! Erin has been employed by her local Stop & Shop for over seven years and has even been honored as Employee of the Month! Additionally, she has built a strong network of social connections. Erin was one of the original members of Big Time Glee, a grassroots singing group that was started by the PBS Community Foundation with just a few young adults meeting weekly at the Leader’s home and singing regularly at community
Senior Centers. She now participates in Big Time Glee (which has grown to 25+ attendees), the Crafting Connection and the PBS Campus Experience at Stony Brook University. Erin says she looks forward to participating in the PBS Community Foundation initiatives because she enjoys singing and performing in the community and she looks forward to being able to “hang out with her friends”. These activities have led to meaningful relationships, connections and other social and recreational opportunities in her community! Lastly, Erin volunteers her time to the Guide Dog Foundation and participates weekly in a cooking class, which helps her gain independent living skills. This food pantry started in 1998 and has a large selection of non-perishable food items, which are available for all residents of Nassau County, regardless of religious affiliation. The pantry, which is located at Congregation Beth Ohr at 2550 Centre Avenue, is open Mondays and Thursdays from 10:00am to 12:00pm and is staffed by volunteers from the congregation and the community. Suffolk Federal is offering local Suffolk County students an opportunity to win academic scholarships to Suffolk County Community College, to ensure their hopes of attending college can come true. Through this program and partnership, six scholarships will be awarded from $5,000 or $10,000 each. Applications must be completed online and submitted by April 26, 2019. If selected as a recipient for any of the scholarships, the student must become a member of Suffolk Federal at the time of award ceremony. Students
can apply at https://sunysuffolk. academicworks.com. This year, academic scholarship opportunities will total $35,000, an increase from the $20,000 which were awarded by Suffolk Federal last year. This year’s academic scholarships include: Suffolk Federal Scholarship Suffolk Federal will award four scholarships of $5,000 each ($2,500 will be awarded to recipients in the fall of 2019 and $2,500 will be awarded to the recipients in the spring 2020).

Eligibility: High-school seniors who are residents of Suffolk County with a minimum GPA of 77. The student must demonstrate involvement in an extracurricular activity and/or community service. The student must also submit an essay of no more than 250 words explaining their eligibility and how they will benefit from receiving this scholarship. The Michael E. Reilly Foundation Memorial Scholarship for Excellence in Fire Science and Emergency Medical Technology Suffolk Federal will award one scholarship of $5,000 to a new full-time student. ($2,500 will be awarded to the recipient in the fall of 2019 and $2,500 will be awarded to the recipient in the spring 2020). Eligibility: Student must volunteer with the Suffolk County Fire Department, volunteer with a local EMS or be enrolled in a Fire Protection Technology to EMT Paramedic program at Suffolk County Community College in the fall of 2019.

Suffolk College Scholarship Continued From 12 The student must submit an essay of no more than 250 words explaining their eligibility and how they will benefit from receiving this scholarship. Navy SEAL LT Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship One high school senior becoming a new full-time student will be awarded $10,000. $5,000 will be
provided by the LT Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation and matched by Suffolk Federal for a total of $10,000. ($5,000 will be awarded to the recipient during the 2019-2020 academic year and $5,000 will be awarded to the same recipient during the 20202021 academic year). Eligibility: High-school senior who is a resident of Suffolk County with a
minimum GPA of 77. The student must demonstrate involvement in a school sport, extracurricular activity and/or involvement at a community-based organization. WIC On Pause for Long Islanders as eWIC System Rolls Out Approximately 20,000 Long Islanders who use the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) won’t have access to services during this week in January. This month, WIC will adopt eWIC, an EBT Card System eliminating paper checks as vouchers. WIC sites across Long Island will be closed from January 14-21 as the new
system rolls out. WICs will reopen on January 22 at limited capacity. Mothers who give birth during this time will be unable to access services for their newborn children.
