The YMCA of Long Island is a leading nonprofit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors,

Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that applications are now available for families to add the names of loved ones to the Town of Oyster Bay’s 9/11 Walls of Honor which recognize all those with a connection to the Town who gave their lives and succumbed in their battle against 9/11 related cancers and illness. Each year, the Town inscribes into the Walls of Honor the names of family members, friends and neighbors lost to
watch each week as more of these heroes pass, in an ever-increasing and unending number. Just as many of these rescue and recovery heroes raced to the Towers the first minute the plane hit, and stayed until the last brick was turned, their memorial stands with and lead us to those we lost that tragic Tuesday morning.” Reports from the World Trade Center Health program indicate that we are approaching a terrible mile-

Farmingdale School District to Host Fifth Annual Districtwide Wellness Event
The Farmingdale School District is planning an evening of healthy mind and body workshops on Wednesday, January, 22, 2020 at Weldon E. Howitt Middle School. The program— Healthy Habits for Well-Being—will include activities like yoga, meditation, drum circles, rock painting, and more. This is the district’s
5th annual event—sponsored by the Wellness Council. “We’re encouraging our students and parents to unplug for a few hours and join us for a really fun evening,” said Dr. Joan Ripley, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning. “All the activities we have planned are geared toward helping peo-
ple create healthy habits that will last them a lifetime. It’s a great way for everyone to start the new year!” The program will run from 6pm-8:15pm, with registration at 6pm and activities beginning at 6:30pm sharp. Free, healthy snacks will be provided. All students must be accompanied by an adult.

When it’s time to head back to the United States, the last thing they can think of is leaving the dog behind to fend for itself. One soldier, Sgt. Dominick, is desperate to bring his dog, Jonsey, back home with him. In order for Paws of War to be successful at bringing a dog back to America from Afghanistan, they work with Nowzad, the only official animal shelter in Afghanistan, and get financial support from public donations. There’s a lot that goes into bringing a dog back to the U.S., including quarantine, all of which comes at a high cost. Jonsey when the starving puppy was eating burnt trash outside of his camp. He took the puppy in, fed him, and the whole unit fell in love with him, which brought them joy. He named him Jonsey, and the dog grew to feel like a part of his family. Now that he will be heading back to the United States, he can’t bear to leave him behind. Stray dogs in Afghanistan have a very rough life and often times are subjected to cruelty. Desperate to bring him back home with him to live out his life and be a part of his larger family, he turned to Paws of War for assistance. The organization has a program in place that helps service members bring their dog home after being deployed to the Middle East. While they are always quick to help do what they can, they can’t do it alone. In order for Paws of War to be successful at bringing a dog back to America from

Night Fishing Parking Permits Now Available to Non-Residents be displayed on dashboards while parking in Town lots where night fishing is permitted, will allow nonresidents to night fish at four different locations in the Town of Oyster Bay throughout the year.” Non-residents will be able to obtain a night fishing parking pass by submitting a $50 fee and being sponsored by a current Town resident who has obtained a night fishing permit. Free Child Seat Inspections The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) recently announced that free car seat inspections are available to parents and caregivers during the month of January. As part of a yearlong safety initiative, state and local law enforcement agencies, together with various community safety partners, are offering free inspections by certified child passenger safety technicians. DMV Commissioner and GTSC Chair Mark J.F. Schroeder said, “I encourage parents and caregivers to take this opportunity to ensure
that their child’s car seat is checked and properly installed. These free inspections are an easy but important step in protecting children yearround.” These events aim to ensure all parents and caregivers understand how to choose an appropriate seat for the child’s age and size and how to install the seat correctly. Trained technicians will use the model of “Learn, Practice, and Explain” to educate caregivers on how to select a child restraint that will fit their child, fit their vehicle and be used correctly every time. Getting safety information and car seat instructions to parents
and caregivers is crucial to saving young lives. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), child safety seats reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71 percent for infants and by 54 percent for toddlers in passenger vehicles.
