It was only after a recent conversation with a friend that I realized I don’t read nearly as often as I used to, or would like to … ever, really. I’m not sure when my love of books took a backseat to … what, exactly, I couldn’t even tell you. But it certainly has. Back in elementary school, I used to belong to whatever book-of-the-month club they were peddling in our reading class, subscribing to the various newsletters and lists of new releases. As I moved up to middle and high school, English class was one of my favorites, and I devoured whatever literary material the lesson plan called for. From short stories and plays to novels and poetry, I
delighted in broadening my horizons. College was much of the same, with special emphasis on those deeper philosophical texts, followed by detailed term papers analyzing each word and phrase and my interpretation of them. Leisurely, perhaps not; but the academic appreciation for such historical works was certainly not lost on me. Since then – in the last decade or so – I can probably count the number of books I have actually read cover to cover. That’s not to say I haven’t attempted a few series from time to time – namely, the five-part Game of Thrones collection – only to fall off track and wind up rereading those very same pages I pored over just a few
months back. As it is, I barely manage to skim through my Rolling Stone subscription, and that only after it is several months outdated. My hometown library card has long since expired, and I have yet to set foot in my new local one in the four years since I moved. Aside from the occasional Barnes & Noble purchase, my book collection has remained status quo. I wouldn’t call reading more a “resolution,” exactly, but it is something I would very much like to invest more time in. Even one book per month would be a vast improvement at this point. And, this time, there will be no term papers due upon completion.

Men and women from across Long Island will be getting all of their red outfits and accessories ready for the American Heart Association’s 16th Annual Long Island Go Red For Women Luncheon. Heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 5 killers of Long Island women.For more than a decade, women have been fighting heart disease individually and together as part of the Go Red For Women movement. Cardiovascular diseases cause one in three women’s deaths each year, killing approximately one woman every minute. Since 1984, more women than men have died each year from heart disease & stroke. On December 16th, Sons of AMVETS Post 48 Members transported toys to the Navy Operational Support Center for the children of Navy Military Personnel located in Farmingdale. The Post 48 Sons held a raffle to help support this toy drive. Once the funding was in place they shopped for the toys and gathered together on December 14th to wrap the gifts. This donation was initiated because the AMVETS Post 48 Sons wanted to thank these Navy Veterans for the service that they are providing to our country. The Farmingdale Armed Services Reserve Center which opened in 2011 is a four story, 212,000
square-foot facility which includes maintenance bays, supply rooms, arms rooms, communications facilities, a kitchen and dining facility, drill shed, gym, as well as modern office spaces. Space for family readiness activities are built into the facility as well. The center also includes training equipment, like a rollover simulator that will allow troops to train for vehicle crashes and a virtual-reality shooting simulator that will help prepare troops for livefire situations, both of which were previously unavailable on Long Island. The Base Re-Alignment and Closure Commission r e c o m m e n d e d
consolidating the reserve component operations on Long Island as a way to save money. The Commission also consolidated also consolidated Army National Guard and Army Reserve Operations in the Hudson Valley, Albany, New York City and Niagara Falls. More than 1,500 traditional Guardsman and Reservists will train at the site and more than 150 full time Army Guard, Army Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve and Navy Reserve Members will work there. HITTING THE DANCE FLOOR - The Farmingdale School District recently offered an opportunity for Howitt Middle School eighth graders taking Spanish classes to see ‘The Hispanic Flamenco Ballet’ in Port Washington. The students attended the performance as part of a District initiative to expose students to aspects of Spanish culture outside the classroom. During the performance, professional dancers showcased a mix of traditional Hispanic dances, including Tango, Cumbia, Flamenco and Salsa. Following the performance, students enjoyed an authentic Mexican lunch at CaraCara Restaurant in Farmingdale.

Cooking methods such as frying can make for delicious meals, but such meals may not be so healthy. For example, each tablespoon of oil used when frying can add more than 100 calories to a meal. When counting calories, men and women should
Stock up on healthy recipes. Purchase cookbooks that showcase healthy recipes, or peruse the internet for heathy recipes. Many websites cater to health-conscious foodies who do not want to sacrifice their health to enjoy delicious meals. Choose smart fats. All oils are loaded in
calories, but healthy oils can still be used without sacrificing flavor. Olive oil is an unsaturated fat that is a much healthier choice than butter or saturated fats. When cooking with oil, do so in moderation.
Think about baking foods. Baking is handy for more than breads and desserts. Baking is one method of cooking that may not require the addition of fat. Meats that are baked can be placed on top of a rack, so that excess fat drips off and is contained in the bottom of the pan. Explore poaching, broiling and grilling. Poaching, broiling and grilling are three healthy alternatives to frying. Broiling and grilling expose food to direct heat, so it is a fast method of cooking and may not be appropriate for foods that require longer cooking times to tenderize. Poaching is the process of simmering foods in water or another flavorful liquid. Use minimally refined ingredients. Select among whole grains and ingredients that
have not been refined. The closer a product is to its natural state, the more nutritional properties it is likely to have retained. Season foods yourself. Rather than relying on prepackaged seasonings, mix your own blends. Packaged seasonings generally contain a lot of salt. Use fresh herbs whenever possible for the freshest of flavor. Add heat for flavor. Spicy pepper, dry mustard and other zesty flavor enhancers can make foods taste delicious without added calories. Try low-fat or fat-free dairy. Substitute low-fat alternatives for full-fat dairy items. For example, Greek yogurt can sometimes be used in place of less healthy ingredients such as mayonnaise. Trim excess fats. Prepare meats and poultry well by trimming the fat and skin to make the final product even healthier.
The Importance of Annual Health Exams
Annual health exams are a key component of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. A person may not see the need to visit the doctor if he or she is feeling well, but not every disease or condition manifests itself in a way that men and women can detect. No two physical exams will be exactly alike, but many will share some general features.
Health History A crucial element of a physical exam will include a thorough health history if the physician doesn’t already have one on file. The doctor will take time to ask questions about family history of illness, health habits, any vices (smoking, drinking alcohol, etc.), exercise schedule and diet. If there is a possible hereditary health condition running through your family, the doctor may suggest certain testing and make note of
potential signs to look for in the future.
Current Ailments After discussing a patient’s history, the doctor may ask if they are having any problems they cannot explain. These can include changes in eating or sleeping patterns; aches and pains; lumps or bumps and other abnormalities. Again, the presence of symptoms may be indicative of illness or physical changes, but not all diseases produce obvious symptoms. Vital Signs A doctor will check a patient’s vital signs during the physical. Areas the doctor will look at include but are not limited to: • Heart rate: This measures the speed at which the heart is pumping. Normal resting heart rate
values range from 60 to 100 beats per minute. • Blood pressure: A blood pressure cuff will measure systolic and diastolic pressure. Systolic pressure measures the force with which the blood is pushing through the arteries. The diastolic blood pressure is the pressure in the arteries between beats, when the heart rests. The systolic (top number) should be below 120, while the bottom should be less than 80, according to the Mayo Clinic. • Respiration rate: The doctor will measure the number of breaths taken in a minute. WebMD says between 12 and 16 breaths per minute is normal for a healthy adult. Breathing more than 20 times per minute can suggest heart or lung problems. • Pulse oximetry: Johns Hopkins School of Medicine says pulse
oximetry is a test used to measure the oxygen level (oxygen saturation) of the blood. It is a measure of how well oxygen is being sent to the parts of your body furthest from your heart. Normal pulse oximeter readings usually range from 95 to 100 percent. Values under 90 percent are considered low. Physical Exam The examination will also include physical components. The doctor will perform a visual inspection of the skin and body for any abnormalities, such as the presence of skin cancer. The physician may feel the abdomen to check that internal organs are not distended. Females’ physical examinations may include breast and pelvic exams. Comprehensive Testing
In addition to the exam at the office, the physical may include an electrocardiogram, or EKG, to check electrical activity of the heart; blood count and cholesterol checks through bloodwork; body mass index testing; X-rays or MRIs and bone-density tests.

A large part of healthy eating involves choosing the right foods. In addition to choosing the right foods, health-conscious individuals must choose the right methods to prepare those foods in order to maximize their nutritional value.
Invest in new cookware. Choose nonstick cookware that will reduce the amount of oil, spray and butter needed to keep foods from sticking. Manufacturers are now touting ceramic cookware, which is free of trace metals or dangerous chemicals that can leach into food from the cooking surface. What’s more, pots and pans don’t contain chemical coatings that can eventually flake off into food.

Dinner Supports Gardens Old Westbury Gardens recently hosted its Annual December Dinner, the organization’s marquis fundraising event that brings together a renowned group of inspiring community members interested in maintaining Long Island’s rich history and traditions. The event, hosted by this year’s December Dinner Chairpersons Robert and Deb Hussey of Garden City, was held in the historic Red Ballroom and West Porch of Westbury House to recreate the holiday celebrations as
imagined in the early 20th century for an exclusive and extraordinary holiday experience. “Dining in a room that holds so much history and nostalgia was truly a unique experience for all who attended,” said Robert Hussey, Co-Chair of the December Dinner. “Complete with the historic Christmas decorations that lined the mantle and the rest of the room, it was like being transported through time. Nassau BOCES Open House performing arts. Attendees can join a theater improvisation skit, sketch in an art class, take a dance class, listen to a jazz performance and participate in much more to get better acquainted with LIHSA. During the Open House, parents of prospective students also have the opportunity to tour the facility and speak with faculty, guidance counselors, administration and staff. Established in 1973, LIHSA is part of the public education system and is paid for by local school districts. It offers
specialized training and instruction to students interested in pursuing careers in dance, drama, filmmaking, instrumental and vocal music, theatre technology, musical theatre and the visual arts. The half-day program enables students to complete their core academic classes in their home high school and receive two and a half hours of intensive training in their chosen field of artistic study. As part of their professional-level training, students regularly receive one-on-one access to experienced professionals
working in the industry. Students have recently benefitted from Master Classes and Workshops lead by pop-rock icon Billy Joel, actor and director Ralph Macchio, and principal Paul Taylor Dance Company dancer Michael Trusnovec, who is a LIHSA graduate, among others. “We are incredibly proud of the instruction and experiences offered at the Long Island High School for the Arts,” said Dr. Robert Dillon, District Superintendent of Nassau BOCES. “Each year, we look forward to our annual

The event is an opportunity for Nassau BOCES Board members, administrators, faculty and staff to thank these invaluable mentors for

Barry Tech partners with more than 800 Long Island businesses, giving students the significant advantage of on-thejob work experience under the supervision of industry specialists.
