Friday’s in late November and early December at the Farmingdale Public Library were collection days sponsored by the Women’s Club of Farmingdale (WCF) Community Impact Program Chair Tina Diamond. With the help of Library Director, Christa Lucarelli, the library set aside a room for club members, friends and local community to drop off food items to be distributed to Farmingdale School District children that qualify. During the school year, when schools are open, qualifying students receive a free breakfast and lunch. However, when the district is closed for holiday and school breaks, food insecurity for these

students intensifies. “Shut the Door on Hunger” will provide non-perishable food items and/or gift cards (any denomination acceptable) to local food stores to ensure that all children have access to the healthy food they need every day to thrive until schools reopen again. The Farmingdale School District social workers provided a list of food items that are shelf stable for storage inside sealed plastic containers/bins. These items will be distributed to the families in donated laundry baskets, which the families can then use for storage. The list supplied by the social workers take the following into account: does the family have access to appliances needed to

make the item, do they have some storage space, and is any other food item needed to complete the preparation process. On Tuesday, December 12, members of the WCF met to fill donated laundry baskets with the requested food items. The baskets were then picked up by the school district and distributed to families in time for the holiday break. Plans are in place to continue this program throughout the school year as each school break occurs. Oyster Bay Town Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato reminds residents that the first half of the 2024 General Tax Levy is due on January 1st, but can be paid without penalty through February 12th. “New York State Law allows my office to provide taxpayers with a 40-day penalty free period from the date the tax is due during which payment may be made without penalty,” Receiver Pravato explained. “After the 40 days, State Law requires a one percent penalty be added for each month the tax remains unpaid, retroactive to January 1st.
