On Thursday December 26th at 3:21 p.m., Suffolk County EMS First Responder, Christine Hogan, answered a 911 emergency call for active maternity help. Christine’s over the phone instructions would prove vital in successfully bringing a bouncing baby girl into this world. As delivery became eminent, Christine began to provide post-dispatch and pre-arrival instructions which included clearing the infant’s airway and tying off the umbilical cord. Christine answered the call with one patient, and quickly found herself with two. She smoothly transitioned to a multiple patient scenario while maintaining a professional demeanor throughout the entire call. “Christine provided care for a Suffolk County resident, and her family, at a level consistent with both, the National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch and the Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Services,”

said Commissioner Joseph Williams, Fire, Rescue, Emergency Services (FRES). “Christine should truly be commended for a job well done.” Christine consistently remained calm and reassuring toward the caller as she assisted in the successful delivery of the newborn baby girl. The Suffolk County Police Department along with the Brentwood Legion Ambulance arrived on scene post-delivery, to take

over pre-hospital care of both the mother and her newborn. “Our men and women of Emergency Medical Services in Suffolk County have consistently gone above and beyond to ensure the safety of our residents,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “I am proud of Christine’s unwavering composure and thank her for her commitment to serve the people of Suffolk County.”

Snowscape By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Remember when you were a kid in school, just dying for that first snowfall to cancel classes? The only plans for the day revolved around making snowmen and snow angels, and then maybe curling up on the couch with some hot cocoa and cookies to watch a movie. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? Fast forward twenty or so years, and the words “chance of flurries” immediately

inspire mass panic and a stampede to stock up on milk and bread. And shovels. Because, you know, you can never have too many. Gone are the days of crossing your fingers for a “snow day” – now, it’s a mad rush to dig out, defrost and brave the slippery slopes on your way to work. Ah, the joys of adulthood. Of course there are days when the snow is insurmountable for even us adults, and we get to stay home and play in the snow too – or at least watch the

neighborhood children from the window, cup of cocoa in hand, reveling in memories of simpler times. How far away those seem. We are fortunate to live in an area where we experience the full force of Mother Nature in all her four-seasoned glory. We may as well enjoy it while we can. Think of the snow as an escape from the routine – or, at the very least, a great way to kick off that New Year’s resolution by burning a few calories while shoveling!

The Crisis Respite program will operate at the newly-named John J. Lynch Veterans Place Shelter in Yaphank and will provide a safe milieu for Veterans experiencing distress. DALER CHAMPS - The Farmingdale High School Varsity Girls Lacrosse Team recently won the 2013 New York State Class A Championship, compiling a 16-3 record along the way. HOLIDAY TOY DRIVE - The Farmingdale School District’s Howitt Middle School Student Council recently hosted a Holiday Toy Drive. Students and faculty members were encouraged to bring in new and unwrapped toys. The students collected the toys – including miniature cars and trucks, dolls and arts and crafts sets – and then donated them to Social Service Volunteers of Nassau County, which distributed them to children throughout the region.

Money Management 101 (NAPSI)—Teens are more optimistic about their financial future but may depend longer on their parents, according to a major new survey. Teens also expressed concern over paying for higher education. Among the Teens and Personal Finance Survey’s key findings, conducted by Junior Achievement USA® and The Allstate Foundation: • More than half of teens think students are borrowing too much to pay for college, yet only 9 percent report they are currently saving money for college. • Nearly 30 percent have not talked with their parents about paying for college. • Nearly one in three teens thinks he or she will be 25 to 27 years old before becoming financially independent. • Teens are unsure about

their ability to budget (23 percent), use credit cards (20 percent) or invest money (34 percent). • The majority of teens (76 percent) still report the best time to learn about money management is in kindergarten through high school, but only 29 percent reported programs currently in place. • Of the 33 percent of teens who say they do not use a budget, 42 percent are “not interested” and more than a quarter (26 percent) think “budgets are for adults.” • More than one-third of teens are either unsure or think their parents do not talk with them enough about money and budgeting. “From our findings, we can infer that teens expect to live with their parents longer. It is interesting to see this shift in teens thinking they will remain financially dependent

on their parents,” said Jack E. Kosakowski, president and chief executive officer of Junior Achievement USA. TOWN TOY COLLECTION - Babylon Town Councilman Tom Donnelly recently announced that the Town has collected dozens of gifts as part of the United States Marine Corps’ annual “Toys for Tots” program. For four weeks, residents were asked to drop-off new toys, books and games at Town Hall to be donated to families in need in time for the holiday season. The numerous gifts that were donated by the Town’s generous residents were recently picked up by a representative from the Marine Corps to be distributed to those in need in our area.

Members of the National Honor Society at Plainedge High School created a mission to eradicate the R-word from student vocabulary. Typically held in March, the students launched a Spread the Word campaign, asking their peers to pledge, as part of their New Year’s

resolutions, to no longer use the R-word. Seniors Deepika Dhawan, Monica Marshall, Lynne Rader and Stephanie Slovak solicited pledges from more than 150 students and staff prior to the holiday break. The school’s Robotics Club donated pins to help

spread the word, and the Art Club created posters announcing the pledge drive. This national campaign was brought to the student’s attention by a special education teacher at the school.

Plainedge School District students Nicholas Tibaldi and Erica Carney are the recipients of the Physical Education Student of the Year Award, presented by the Nassau Zone Chapter of the New York State Association

for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. The awards were presented to these fine student-athletes during a Nassau Zone dinner at the Crest Hollow Country Club on December 16th.

In attendance were Director of Health and Physical Education Jamie LaBelle and Nicholas and Erica’s parents, along with the top two senior athletes from every high school in Nassau County.
