Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the shuttering of local restaurants for long periods of time, commercial oyster growers have been faced with a larger than normal surplus of mature oysters. Rather than discard these perfectly healthy bivalves, they will be placed in protected areas of Oyster Bay Harbor, where they will help naturally clean and filter local waterways while spawning additional shellfish to help build back the depleted Oyster
during this public health pandemic,” said Supervisor Saladino. “By placing these oysters in protected areas of the harbor, we strengthen the resiliency of our waterways and boost shellfish reproduction. These oysters will also help to naturally absorb wave action for shoreline stabilization while cleaning and filtering local waterways and spawning additional shellfish to help build back the depleted the oyster population.” This project partners the Town with the Pew Charitable Trust and the Nature Conservancy as part of their Supporting Oyster Aquaculture and Restoration (SOAR) Project. Under this initiative, more than 100
simultaneously planting over 5 million oysters across 7 states! In addition to all the environmental benefits, commercial growers will also be reaping the economic benefits of this partnership during a time where most people and businesses have been struggling, with sales decimated within the last 9 months due to the global pandemic. Councilman Imbroto added, “Protecting our natural assets is critically important for the Town, and by restoring our shellfish populations, we ensure that we are working to keep our waters clean. Quite simply, there is no Oyster Bay without oysters!”

Imbroto recently announced that residents who regularly receive recycling/ yard waste collection in the Town of Oyster Bay may dispose of their Christmas tree on regular recycling/ yard waste days for the next two weeks, ending Friday, January 15th. “We all love the beauty of Christmas lights and trees during the holiday season. After the celebrations are over, it is important to discard the tree in a timely manner as Christmas trees can pose as a fire hazard, especially after drying out,” said Councilman Imbroto. “Proper and prompt disposal of a dried out tree is very important, and you can dispose of your tree at the next scheduled yard waste collection day.” For additional questions, residents can contact the Town’s Sanitation Division at (516) 677-5848.

Since 2012, Northwestern Mutual has been committed to the fight against childhood cancer in support of patients, families and survivors, and 2020 has been no exception. Children with cancer have faced new and greater challenges this year as a result of the pandemic, and the company’s employees and financial advisors are doubling down on their involvement in these efforts through volunteering, fundraising and more. New York Park Avenue has been recognized as a 2020 Childhood Cancer Impact Award recipient, receiving a $15,000 grant for the Sunrise Association. Since 2017, the office has been a proud partner of the Sunrise Association, which offers year-round programs and in-hospital recreational activities free of charge to children with childhood cancer and their siblings. The team has raised more than $75,000 for the organization, in addition to raising significant awareness for the nonprofit at fundraising events and activities.

Sometimes the things we don’t expect and haven’t prepared for turn out to be the most lifechanging experiences. Angels of Long Island is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that somewhat formed itself back in 2015. Debbie and Brittany, a mother and daughter duo turned a small Facebook group into a fast growing non-profit organization that helps countless Long Islanders in need. Six years ago these two ladies knew of someone in need of clothing and simply wanted to see if they could be of help. They decided to start a Facebook group in hopes of spreading the word and receiving donations for this person in need. They posted a message and went on with their day, later checking in to find themselves overwhelmed with the response. Whoever doubts that there aren’t people with good hearts that are willing to help a neighbor in need is wrong, fortunately! Debbie and Brittany named the Facebook group Angels of Long Island and members would post about ways they could help others in crisis on Long Island. The group continued to gain in momentum and members, so much so that Debbie and Brittany decided to open up a storefront location in Patchogue called Angels of Long Island. Their slogan Neighbors helping neighbors is a great reflection of what this thriving thrift store/boutique/ donation center does. “We work so hard to keep our store clean and beautiful so that all of our customers who walk through our doors feels a sense of dignity and respect shopping at our store,” says Debbie. “We are not like your average thrift store! We carry designer brands and offer a unique experience. I did not expect to be running a thriving non-profit organization that has a
storefront on Long Island and helps so many in need when I made that Facebook group years ago. What has come since that group was formed is truly a miracle.” The mission of this non-profit is to assist and advocate for people in our Long Island community who are in need of assistance. Their goal is to empower people to overcome poverty and live prosperous lives. They truly provide a wide range of services and goods to people in crisis, however anyone can come shop at their Patchogue store, which is located at 350-23 East Main Street. Angels of Long Island typically holds many outreach events during the year such as a Back to School Drive, Thanksgiving Assistance, a Coat Drive, Christmas Help and more. However, due to the pandemic they aren’t holding all of these outreach events. Ones that are held are designed with safety in mind. This past December the charity held a huge Christmas Help outreach event, where many people in need were able to come to an outdoor event and children could choose up to five gifts along with grabbing hats, gloves and scarves. Then their entire family could choose from tasty food items to bring home for a Christmas meal, along with being able to shop for other food items to bring home. All of this was free of charge to the children and families who participated. There are many ways you can help out with Angels of Long Island and there is much more to write about. Women’s Club of Farmingdale on the March On Monday, November 30, 2020, members of the Women’s Club of Farmingdale (WCF) delivered 36 Comfort Bags to Madonna Heights Children’s Shelter. This has been an annual club program since 2012. These bags were collected by the club’s Welfare Committee, chaired by Rosemary Emigholz, and contained stuffed animals, face masks (child size), toys, books and blankets. The zippered bags make it easier for the children to carry their “prized” possessions wherever they go. In attendance were members, Linda Kreussling, Tina Diamond, Rosemary Emigholz, Anna Ievolo (not shown), Judy Vilas, Angelina Dunlop, Judith Vasquez and Madonna Heights Director of Services Lisa Forgione. The bags will be distributed to the Madonna Heights children in time for the Christmas holiday. Thank you club members for “making spirits bright” for these children, especially during these difficult times. The WCF is very grateful to St. Kilian’s Church for giving the club permission to use their spacious auditorium for the club’s indoor meetings during the pandemic. A big “thankyou” to Barbara Magnum for making this possible. The club held their November meeting there before a surge in positive cases closed this location. Club discussions centered around on-going programs, including fundraising, donation of “comfort bags” and “sacks for
soldiers.” 1st Vice President Lynda Leone presented a program on “The Hearing Connection.” She invited Dr. Mary Griffin, Au.D. to speak to members about common hearing issues. Solutions for hearing loss are very individualistic and therefore cannot be prescribed like eyeglasses. But her office staff are very skilled at diagnosing specific hearing loss through precise testing methods. Thank you Lynda for setting up a very informative program. With her home beautifully draped with fall decorations, fall plants and holiday miniature villages, Rosemary and George Emigholz hosted a delightful Walk-Thru Fundraiser in October. Members and friends enjoyed delicious baked goods and candies with donations earmarked for the club’s Ways & Means Committee. Thank you all for your generous support. Also in October, the Welfare Committee delivered a Fall Basket of Goodies and a tray of homemade cookies and brownies to the residents of Epic House in Farmingdale today. Due to Covid restrictions, these items were dropped off on the porch and warmly received by those in charge. On October 17, 2020, the GFWC-NYS Island Metro District Meeting was hosted by District Director Mary Carpenter and the Junior League of the Women’s Club of Farmingdale at Verona Restaurant. Dais and Honored Guests included:

Curran Hosts Virtual Kwanzaa Celebration Nassau County Executive Laura Curran recently hosted the County’s official Kwanzaa celebration at the African American Museum of Nassau County in Hempstead. The virtual event, downsized due to COVID-19, consisted of remarks and reflections on the principles of Kwanzaa from County Executive Curran, Office of Minority Affairs
Executive Director Lionel Chitty, and Office of Minority Affairs intern, Xavier Bermudez. After the speaking portion of the event, Bermudez lit the kinara as County Executive Curran marked each of the seven principles of Kwanzaa. A centerpiece of African American history and culture on Long Island since 1970, the African American Museum of Nassau County offers
a rotating series of exhibits showcasing local and national African-American artists.
