Amtrak Repair Work at Penn Station Will Affect Some LIRR Customers Starting January 8 Here’s what the MTA is doing to help Beginning Monday, January 8, 2018, Amtrak will be conducting repair work at Penn Station that requires changes to Long Island Rail Road scheduled service.

What you can do For complete schedule change details, be sure to pick up our special timetables effective Monday, January 8 at your nearest station or at mta.info/lirr. In addition, all LIRR customers who travel to Penn Station should: • Consider riding at the start or end of peak hours to avoid congestion • Walk toward either end of the station platform to board the extra cars added to some trains • Consider travelling to Atlantic Terminal or Hunterspoint Avenue instead

To help minimize the impact this construction will have on our customers, the LIRR is making changes that will allow us to maintain capacity into Penn Station. These changes include: • Rerouting five of the 98 morning rush hour trains that normally go to Penn Station • Rerouting three of the 86 evening rush hour trains that normally depart from Penn Station • Adding four trains before or after rush hours – two in the morning and two in the afternoon/evening – plus one additional PM peak train from Hunterspoint Avenue • Adding cars to five trains to increase seating capacity • Combining two evening rush hour trains with prior or subsequent trains that depart within the same time frame (approximately six to 11 minutes) and serve all affected stations

Grammy Award winning Kids Musician and Performer, Tim Kubart returned to Woodward Parkway Elementary School to record background vocal tracks for his upcoming album, Building Blocks. Under the direction of Music Teacher, Stephanie Haas, the third-

grade chorus sang lyrics from Tim’s new song, “We are Growing.” “Tim is a pied piper when it comes to children’s music and they absolutely adored working with him!” said Mrs. Hass. “I am so proud of how hard the children worked and stayed focused during the recording

session. It’s really thrilling to think we contributed to an album that will be enjoyed by families across the country!” Tim, who graduated Farmingdale High School in 2004, has made sure his tour has included a stop at his elementary school for the past three years.

During his visit for last years’ show, he happened to hear the chorus practicing and asked Mrs. Haas if they could be on his next album. Set for release in the fall of 2018, Building Blocks is all about how communities grow, and how as you get older you realize there’s more people to care about. After the recording, Tim held a Q&A session with the children and described the process of writing the album (along with fellow musicians Matt Puckett and Dominic Fallacaro) at a cabin in the woods. He said the trees were the inspiration for the song, “We are Growing,” and he told the kids, “all of our songs, we try to remember what it was like to be your age.”

When one student asked, “How are you going to sing the song on tour without us?” Tim jokingly replied, “We’re getting a big bus and taking you all!” The children cheered wildly at that idea, and when they heard the recorded tracks played back for them there was an absolute sea of smiles. Tim discovered his chosen profession during college. He was volunteering at a homeless shelter and was asked to play guitar and sing for the children. Immediately, he was struck by the thought, “this is what I do!” His first album, Home, won the 2015 Grammy for Best Children’s Album. He says, “The songs are about Farmingdale and

the memories I created growing up here.” His bio includes four years as the Host/Writer/ Producer of SUNNY SIDE UP, on NBCUniversal’s Sprout Channel, and he’s currently a cast member in POSTMODERN JUKEBOX. He writes songs for Sesame Street and his first children’s book, OOPSIEDO! is slated to hit bookstores in May 2018. Tim has happy memories from his years at Woodward Elementary, and was pleased to feel and see “a lot of energy and great messaging all over the school.” When Building Blocks comes out next year, he plans to return and perform a big concert for all the students.

We have only to forge ahead, to take these chances as they are presented to us. May we all carry this sentiment with us into 2018… and, if you do happen to have a neatly categorized list of goals for the year, give it a glance from time to time; make adjustments as needed, and keep moving forward. Dr. Bill Brennan, Administrative Director for Innovation and Communications in the Farmingdale School District, got quite a surprise while attending the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Making it Happen Awards. He won! Dr. Brennan was honored for his contributions and commitment to the successful integration of

and faith. The Boy Bishop represents and celebrates the life of St. Nicholas, the patron of children and giver of gifts under the name Santa Claus. This year, this great honor was given to Ms. Gabriella Marsico and Mr. Ryan Hynes. Ryan is a junior at

Farmingdale High is on the Varsity Football team, Varsity Basketball team and a member of the French Honor Society. He is in the chorus and made it to All County this year. He is on the Farmingdale Youth Council and is working towards becoming an Eagle Scout. Gabriella Marsico is a Sunday School Teacher, and former acolyte. A girl scout, she transformed an old office in the St. Luke’s school into a library for all the children to use. She still maintains the library and is involved with the St. Luke’s youth group. She has been playing basketball for the St. Luke’s team since she was a peewee and is the Head Cheerleading Coach. St. Luke’s is proud to have these outstanding young people represent the youth of our congregation.

This year, a crop of 14 new educators joined Nassau BOCES Department of Regional Schools and Instructional Programs in its ongoing mission to provide Long Islanders with all the skills needed for success in the workplace. These devoted and talented educators are spread among four vital programs: the Adult Evening program, the Adult Learning Center, the Career and Technical Education program, and Long Island High School for the Arts. Three new teachers joined the Adult Evening program: Cliff Edwards of Oceanside, who teaches Trade Electric; Jeff Feinberg of Bellmore, who teaches Medical Assisting; and William Welsh of Wantagh, who teaches Veterinary Assisting. The Adult Learning Center welcomed 11 new

adult educators: Christina Alexander of Roosevelt, Cynthia Buccaran of Locust Valley, Amy Cooke of Levittown, John Davis of Flushing, Charlotte Kalista of Farmingdale, Joanna Mankowski of East Meadow, Reena Mathew of Westbury, Roberta Nilsen of East Meadow, Kris Nordt of Baldwin, Suzette Rivera of Westbury, and Erin William-Maples of Valley Stream. “All of our new teachers come to us with many years of industry experience,” said Michele Cohen, Principal of the Adult Education Program. “Each of them has decided that teaching is the best way of giving back to their communities and building the future of Long Island business. We put a great deal of effort into creating partnerships with industry, workforce development, and making connections

For many, the holiday season is a time of giving and receiving. A lot of us are so fortunate that we get showered with presents and then ring in the New Year with joyous thoughts of new beginnings. But what about the rest of us? Let’s not forget about those who really need our help! The Long Island Coalition for the Homeless is an organization that was originally founded as the Nassau-Suffolk Partnership for the Homeless in 1985. LICH now works to educate the public and advocates for the development and expansion of permanent, affordable housing - so those working in low-wage jobs and/or on disability and public assistance can have decent, safe housing for themselves and their children. This organization brings together over 60 nonprofits and local government with the mission to help people on Long Island who are facing homelessness or are homeless. Each month, their members come together and listen to current concerns and opportunities within the nonprofit community, learn about openings in housing placements and more. The Coalition runs a popular Boutique in Amityville, right by their main office. The Boutique is open on Monday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and allows veterans and other neighbors-inneed to access, free of charge, new and gently used essential items such as clothing, housewares and emergency food. This Boutique is much more than a distribution

center, as it engages the community in volunteerism and spreads awareness about the issue of homelessness. The Boutique always welcomes volunteers and donations and offers community service hours to those willing to volunteer! At this point in time, they are currently taking donations for the following items: winter coats, hats, gloves, scarves, toiletries and baby essentials such as wipes and diapers. They are also in need of volunteers for their next sorting event on January 20th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. LICH also offers annual events that you can become involved with such as their “Have a Heart for the Homeless” Candlelight Vigil (scheduled for April 10th, 2018), their Homeless Count and their Backpack Pirates and Supply for our Students events. Their annual Homeless Count Event occurs each January, and is a time when trained volunteers go out across the island to coordinate point-in-time counts of sheltered and unsheltered men, women and children. During this time, they also distribute toiletry kits, sleeping bags and other essential items to the homeless. Fashion Donation Twenty-five top-of-theline Pucci mannequins, donated by Saks Fifth Avenue in Huntington, arrived at LIU Post’s College of Management on December 13th to be used by students enrolled in its Fashion Merchandising program. The mannequins arrived with an additional anonymous donation of 50 high-fashion vintage couture gowns from top designers, such as Jacques Fath, Ungaro and Yves St

Laurent. LIU Post’s growing fashion merchandising program is unique to the region, with a focus on the business end of the fashion industry. The mannequins and dresses will be part of a Capstone project this spring where the students will catalog and display the items, creating a full fashion exhibition with detailed signage as their culminating project. Cherie Serota, Director

of Fashion Merchandising at LIU Post, was thrilled with the significant gifts for the program. As part of the Intro to Fashion Merchandising coursework, students studied fashion by the decade from the Victorian era to the present. The couture gowns all come from the 1980s era. “We have Halston, Saint Laurent, Lanvin, and all these different designers that we talk about,” Serota

said. “We discuss the decade they’re from and what the lasting influences are and now we have this collection here.” Students were on hand to help dress the mannequin. The pride and wonder they felt upon having a tangible class lesson come to life in their hands was palpable. “I think it’s very cool to see pieces that we’ve seen in class come alive, and actually be able to hold them and

dress the mannequins,” said Samantha Perez, a student in the Fashion Merchandising program. “Especially the fact that they are such important pieces from designers that we’ve already learned about.” The pieces ranged from formal gowns from Yves Saint Laurent to cutting edge pieces from the father of haute couture Jacques Fath to iconic pieces, like a Burberry trench coat.

“It’s also revolutionary the ways everything changes from one era to the next,” said Fashion Merchandising student Judith Solorzano. “For example, the Burberry jacket. I could wear that right now on an everyday basis. I can see how it could sell just the same today. Just because of the brand Burberry.” Solorzano considered a

Over fifth-grade students at Albany Avenue Elementary School transformed their gym into an elaborate, colorful, cardboard arcade. This was the second year for the event - and a day of absolute fun for the entire school. The Grade 5 Genius Arcade was originally inspired by a YouTube video called Caine’s Arcade, about a nine-year-old Los Angeles boy named Caine Monroy, who spent his entire 2012 summer vacation, dreaming and

building an intricate DIY arcade using cardboard boxes from his dad’s auto parts store. The video went viral, inspiring a scholarship fund and the creation of a non-profit: imagination.org. Albany Avenue 5th graders were assigned the project in September, giving them four months to create the arcade. Becky Camera, one of the fifth grade teachers who oversaw the project said, “The kids really rose to the occasion, exceeding every expectation.” Students

collected their own cardboard, and worked together in small groups (2-3 pupils per game) to create approximately eleven games per classroom. They began by watching the video, then brainstormed ideas to decide what they wished to create. Next, they learned how to manipulate the cardboard, then painted, decorated, and named their games. Fifth-grade teacher, Kevin Schwab, who kickstarted the arcade after seeing the video, said
