A World War II maritime patrol bomber similar to those that once hunted Nazi U-boats outside New York Harbor is taking to the air this Memorial Day weekend at the American Airpower Museum at Republic Airport thanks to the efforts of Bristal Assisted Living. The aircraft will be on display for the purpose of offering a tribute to all US Navy personnel and the Merchant Mariners who sailed in dangerous waters during World War II. Dubbed, the “PBY Catalina,” the “Cat” operated along the Long Island coast line during World War II, searching for Nazi U-boats trying to torpedo Allied freighters and tankers. It served as the “eyes” of the American fleet when radar was in its infancy, and it was instrumental in securing victory over Japanese aircraft carriers in the Pacific and German

High school students from Nassau and Suffolk counties with dreams of becoming actors, dancers, playwrights, painters, sculptors, musicians, filmmakers, singers or lighting designers are encouraged to audition for the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), consistently voted Bethpage Best Arts School since 2011. Part of the public school system, LIHSA is conveniently located at a state-of-the-art facility in Syosset where students in grades 9-12 have the opportunity to attend either a half- or full-day program. Students receive professional-level training in art, dance, drama, theatre technology, instrumental or vocal music, musical theatre, film or playwriting each day as a supplement to their regular course of study. Students can compose and create original works in the school’s cutting-edge Digital Media and Production Lab. Teens who exercise the half-day option spend part of the day at LIHSA and the remainder of their time in their home district completing academic requirements. Students who elect the full-day option complete all requirements for obtaining their Regents or Advanced Regents diploma at LIHSA. A broad spectrum of opportunities is available to students interested in studying the arts. A staff consisting of teachers and practicing professional artists prepares the students for auditions, helps with portfolio selections and steers students toward specialized awards and honors. More than 98 percent of the graduates go on to colleges or conservatories. Eighty-three graduates from the class of 2012 collectively earned more than $6.5 million in scholarships and grants, and are now attending some of the most prestigious schools in the country. University. Along with fellow classmates from St. John’s, students will be staying with DDI host families throughout their journey. Joining Nathan and John on the journey are Morgan Zajkowski, Marita Rausch, Liam Kenny, and Michael Sardone. “This walk captures the spirit of my fellow classmates of giving back,” stated John Kenny. “We have gained an increased appreciation for the ways in which we can improve the lives of those around us. With that in mind, we decided we would like to do one final project to commemorate our time at St. John’s and start our transition to serving the community post graduation.” Funds raised will go towards DDI’s Little Plains School and Children’s Residential Project. This ambitious project not only includes a new home and added classroom capacity at the school for 24 children with Autism, but includes sorely needed renovations to the school building, which is over 50 years old. New handicap accessibility, an HVAC system upgrade, roof replacement, lighting upgrades and various other improvements to increase the energyefficiency of the school building will be included in the work. “We could not have found a better organization to support than DDI,” commented Nathan Holmes. “Through financial assistance we hope to support the valuable projects DDI implements and the services it offers to the many children and adults across Nassau and Suffolk Counties.”
