Spring Cleaning Can Alleviate Allergies

llergies affect people of all ages. The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology reports that allergic rhinitis affects between 10 and 30 percent of the world’s population. In addition, the prevalence of allergic diseases has risen in industrialized nations for more than 50 years.
Clean Windows Singularly Prolonged exposure to outdoor allergens, such as pollen, mold or ragweed, can aggravate allergies. Therefore, if windows are being cleaned, do one at a time and then promptly close the window. Having the air conditioning running can help filter the air as well.
Seasonal allergies tend to be the strongest in spring and autumn. Allergies can be exacerbated by many factors, including in homes where improvements are being made. Regular housecleaning can remove many common allergy triggers and help alleviate symptoms. Knowing which common home improvement mistakes can aggravate allergies can help homeowners avoid them.
Use Exhaust Fans The AAAAI recommends using an exhaust fan in the kitchen and bathrooms to reduce the levels of moisture in these rooms and filter out potential allergens and odors. Moisture can eventually lead to the growth of mold and mildew, which isn’t healthy for anyone, including allergy sufferers, to breathe in.

Before any cleaning begins, allergy sufferers should don face masks and rubber gloves to prevent themselves from breathing in allergens or having them touch their hands, where they can be transferred to the face or elsewhere. Those cleaning should also wear

Memorial Day BBQ Tips
M
emorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer. For many, Memorial Day weekend also signifies their first chance to invite friends and family over for a backyard barbecue. While some never put their grills away for the winter, braving the cold so they
can keep grilling year-round, many may need a refresher to ensure their Memorial Day BBQ starts summer off on the right foot. Stock up on supplies. Before hosting your first backyard barbecue, take inventory of your supplies, making sure you have a
spatula, tongs, oven mitts, a sturdy grill brush and other accessories you may need during grilling season. Check each item to make sure it’s not worse for wear and do the same with the grill as well. Replace supplies that have too much wear and tear in advance of Memorial Day weekend so you have one less item on your to-do list come the day of the barbecue. Designate some time to do some cleaning. Even if you cleaned the grill and patio furniture before putting the items in storage for the winter, they likely will need to be cleaned again before you host your first soiree of the season. Remove any dust and check for spider webs or signs of other critters that might have made your furniture home over the cold winter. Droppings
from rodents can be dangerous, and spiders can bite unsuspecting grillmasters. Clean patio furniture before putting it out as well. Find some new recipes. Hot dogs and hamburgers are perfectly acceptable backyard barbecue fare, but hosts who want to treat their guests to something new this summer can find a host of recipes online. Consider recipes for grilled vegetables so vegetarian guests can enjoy freshly grilled foods alongside your other guests. Just be sure to separate veggies from meat on the grill so vegetarian guests are not hesitant to eat. And while grilled meat tends to be popular at backyard barbecues, don’t overlook recipes for grilled fish that can be both nutritious and delicious. Get guests home safe. Memorial Day gatherings tend to be festive, but keep an eye on guests to ensure that no one consumes an excessive amount of alcohol. Keep a list of local cab companies on hand or download a car service app to your smartphone so safe means of transportation are always within reach.

Make Road Trip Season More Eco-Friendly
M
any drivers anxiously await the arrival of spring, when they can rev their engines and enjoy the burgeoning greenscapes synonymous with the season. Though the colors of fall foliage might be more closely associated with road trips, many drivers enjoy the first few warm days of spring when they get a chance to hit the open road with their windows down for the first time in months. Driving is not always the most ecofriendly activity. However, there are various ways to enjoy spring road trips without compromising the environment. Do not idle your vehicle. When engines are running but cars are not moving, this is referred to as “idling.” It’s hard to blame drivers for idling their vehicles in winter, when many motorists try to warm up their engines and their vehicles’ interiors so their morning commutes are as comfortable as possible. Idling cars might not be moving, but they are still burning fuel, meaning drivers who routinely idle their vehicles are adversely affecting fuel efficiency. It’s also important to note that
idling is no longer necessary in modern vehicles. That’s because the electronic fuel injection systems in today’s cars require just a few seconds to get full oil pressure throughout the engine. Such systems were not present in older vehicles. Take it easy on the road. Road trips tend to be more enjoyable and are certainly safer when drivers take their time and don’t rush to their destination. And driving slowly happens to be more eco-friendly as well. According to the online automotive resource Edmunds. com, gently gaining speed is much more fuel-efficient than accelerating quickly. Always obey speed limits and avoid quickly accelerating when stoplights turn green. Empty the trunk. During winter, many drivers understandably carry some extra items in their trunk to account for inclement weather. Keeping ice scrapers, extra coolant or even a snow shovel in the trunk might make sense for drivers who live in regions that routinely encounter heavy snowfall. When spring arrives, drivers should
remove any unnecessary items from their trunks. Such items will increase the weight of the vehicle, thereby reducing its fuel efficiency. Athletes and outdoors enthusiasts should also remove golf bags and sporting equipment from their trunks when taking trips where such items won’t be needed. Don’t top off at the gas pump. Many drivers, especially those on road trips who want to avoid extra tops at the filling station, top off their gas tanks when nozzles shut off automatically. Such a practice is harmful to the planet and may not be doing your vehicle any favors,
either. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency notes gasoline
needs some extra room in gas tanks to expand. Without that extra room, the gas may evaporate into the vehicle’s vapor collection system, adversely affecting emissions and potentially damaging the vehicle. Motorists can employ several simple strategies to make spring road trip season more eco-friendly.

While it’s certainly an enjoyable leisure activity, cycling also can provide a great alternative to more popular modes of transportation like driving. According to Bay Area Bike to Work Day, a movement dedicated to promoting cycling as a means of commuting to and from work, drivers of small vehicles (those that get 35 miles per gallon of gas) who commute 10 miles per day, five days a week can expect to consume 68 gallons of gas in a typical year during their commutes. During those commutes, their vehicles will produce 0.7 tons of CO2. SUV drivers will consume nearly double that amount of fuel while their vehicles produce nearly three times as much CO2 emissions. Cycling to work won’t consume any fuel or produce any emissions, and cyclists won’t be forced to sit idly in rush hour traffic.
Fishing: Fishing devotees tend to be wildly devoted to their craft, but one need not be an expert angler to enjoy fishing and help the planet. According to the Virginia Department of Game & Inland Fisheries, fishing supports wildlife and fisheries management. The DGIF notes that anglers help to set seasons and creel limits, ensuring that wildlife populations remain stable and even flourish. Many anglers also find fishing is a great form of stress relief that provides a peaceful escape from the daily grind. Running/Walking: In lieu of running or walking on a treadmill indoors, men and women can get outside and do their jogging or walking in the great outdoors. While treadmills are not necessarily big energy consumers, running or walking outdoors consumes no energy and provides a great opportunity to spend time outside, especially for professionals who spend most of their days in office buildings. The great outdoors comes calling for many people when temperatures begin to climb. Answering that call can be a great way to reduce your carbon footprint and improve your mood.
Hiking: Hiking is another ecofriendly outdoor activity that can pay dividends for both the planet and the people who call it home. Lawmakers in towns and cities with thriving hiking communities may be encouraged to support legislation that preserves hiking trails and parks and prevent potentially harmful construction from taking place. And individuals can reap a number of benefits from hiking through the

emorial Day is celebrated each May to commemorate the people who died in service of the United States of America. Even though barbecues and visions of the upcoming summer weather may command much of the attention come Memorial Day weekend, the holiday really serves as a remembrance for those military members who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country, as well as the personnel who continue to protect and serve today. Memorial Day Origins Memorial Day was first known as Decoration Day and was borne out of the Civil War. On May 30th, 1868, General John Logan, a national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, decreed General Order No. 11, which designated the day for the “purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land.”

Lamb a Favorite Meal at Springtime

ersatile and flavorful, lamb is enjoyed across the globe and is especially popular come springtime holidays. Throughout the Middle East and parts of Eastern Europe, lamb has traditionally been enjoyed once the weather warms and the season of fertility renews. Christians, who refer to Jesus Christ as the “Lamb of God,” pay homage to the Easter miracle and often dine on lamb as part of their celebrations. Depending on how they interpret Jewish law, Jews may or may not include lamb at their traditional Passover seder. Lamb is a tender and tasty meat that can be prepared in various ways. Lamb can be roasted, braised, stewed, broiled and even grilled. To prepare lamb well, it is extremely important to follow safety guidelines concerning food cross-contamination. Undercooked and raw meats
may contain E. coli bacteria; therefore, lamb should not come in contact with other foods that will be served uncooked. Many cuts of lamb are very tender so they will not require long marinating times to help break down the fibers in the meat. Lamb does not need a lot of prep time. In fact, a simple seasoning of herbs, garlic or a spice rub will provide substantial flavor. According to The Daily Meal, New Zealand or Australian lamb has a milder flavor than domestic lamb. Over-seasoning can overwhelm the delicate flavor of the lamb in these cases. While preferences differ, many chefs attest that a bone-in cut of lamb will be more flavorful. However, boneless cuts are easier to carve. Similarly, cooks have strong opinions on the doneness of lamb, with some prefering rare meat while others like theirs well-done. Lamb can be juicy and tender at a wide range of cooking temperatures,
so home chefs can decide how they want to prepare their lamb. The average temperature for roasting lamb to medium doneness will fall between 135º to 145º F, with the USDA recommending at least 145º F as the desired temperature. Lamb roasts at a rate of 20 minutes per pound at a cooking temperature of 325º F. Use a thermometer to accurately measure the internal temperature of lamb. Remove the lamb when it is roughly five degrees below the desired temperature, as the meat will continue to cook even after it is removed from the oven, skillet or grill. After cooking. let the lamb rest for around 10 minutes for thinner cuts and 20 minutes for roasts or leg of lamb to allow the juices to redistribute. Certain flavors pair especially well with lamb, including citrus, mint, garlic, oregano and curry. Lamb can be served beside potatoes, couscous, polenta, vegetables and even pasta.

Planning for a Memorable Graduation Day

raduation day can be an exciting and nervewracking experience. Steeped in tradition, graduation signifies the end of the line for academia for many students. Knowing what to expect during the commencement ceremony and being prepared can help tame nerves and ensure the day moves along as smoothly as possible. Get Clothing Set Choose your attire several days before the graduation ceremony. Try on the clothing that will be worn beneath the graduation gown along with the gown to ensure everything fits well. Collared shirts look classic beneath the gown for both female and male graduates. However, schools may have their own dress requirements that should be followed. Iron or have the dry cleaners press all items so they are crisp and free of wrinkles. It’s a good idea to wear flat shoes for the commencement ceremony. Whether traversing the football field or the school auditorium, flat, comfortable shoes will be easy to
walk in and help graduates avoid slipping or tripping. Fuel Up Depending on the size of the graduating class, commencement ceremonies can take a few hours. Make sure to eat a hearty breakfast and be well-hydrated prior to leaving the house. If possible, bring along a small bottle of water. Outdoor ceremonies or those in stuffy auditoriums can mean contending with sun and warmth. Sipping water can prevent overheating. Leave Travel Time Much of the community will be en route to the graduation, making for congested roads and difficult parking situations. Do not add to nerves by rushing around. Give yourself an extra half hour or so to arrive at the destination and get settled. Suggest an early departure for guests as well, as the parking lot or on-street parking will fill up quickly. Expect Limited Tickets Many schools have space restrictions and can only

Orange Whole-Wheat Waffles with Yogurt and Fresh Berries Makes about 6 5- to 6-inch waffles • Serves 4 to 6 While the dinner table might be where families catch up and share stories of their day, breaking bread at breakfast time can be just as enjoyable. That’s especially true when families take the time to create homemade breakfasts, such as the following recipe for “Orange Whole-Wheat Waffles with Yogurt and Fresh Berries” . . .

For the Orange Whole-Wheat Waffles: Preheat a waffle iron (and, if you plan to hold the waffles until serving time, preheat the oven to 200º F).
21⁄4 cups white whole-wheat flour 3 tablespoons sugar 2 teaspoons baking powder 1⁄4 teaspoon salt 11⁄4 cups whole milk 1⁄2 cup freshly squeezed orange juice 2 eggs, separated 5 teaspoons packed, grated orange zest 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
Yogurt Topping
1 cup Greek-style yogurt (see note) 4 teaspoons honey 1 teaspoon grated orange zest, packed Fresh raspberries, strawberries or blueberries, for garnish
In a large serving bowl, stir together the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. In another bowl, whisk together the milk, orange juice, egg yolks and orange zest. In a third bowl, beat the egg whites until firm, but not stiff. Make a well in the dry ingredients and pour in the milk mixture, blending gently only until the ingredients are combined. Add the butter in a slow stream, continuing to blend until the butter is incorporated. Gently fold in the egg whites.
For the yogurt topping: In a small serving bowl, whisk together the yogurt, honey and orange zest. Pour 1⁄2 cup of the batter (or more, depending on the size of your waffle iron) onto the waffle iron and, using a metal spatula or table knife, spread the batter to within 1⁄2 inch of the edge. Close the cover and cook approximately 3 minutes, or until crisp and golden brown. (If your waffles aren’t crisp, even after a “ready” signal has sounded, continue to cook them, watching carefully, until crisp and golden. If not serving immediately, place the waffles in a single layer on
a baking sheet in the preheated oven while you finish with the remaining batter.) Serve the waffles topped with a generous dollop of the yogurt mixture and garnish with some berries. {Note: Nonfat, as well as reduced- to whole-fat varieties of Greek yogurt work in this recipe.}

Steaming or sautéing vegetables might be among the most popular ways to cook veggies, but grillmasters know that it’s not just main dishes that taste great when cooked over an open flame. As the following recipe for “Charred Green Beans with Lemon Verbena Pesto” can attest, grilled vegetables make for simple yet satisfying side dishes.

Green Beans 11⁄2 pounds slender green beans 2 teaspoons olive oil
Prepare a hot fire in your grill.
Lemon Verbena Pesto 1 cup fresh lemon verbena leaves (substitute fresh lemon balm leaves) 2 garlic cloves 1⁄4 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1⁄4 cup pine nuts or English walnuts 1⁄2 cup olive oil Fine kosher or sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Toss the beans with olive oil and place in a perforated grill basket or wok set on a baking sheet. For the Lemon Verbena Pesto, combine the lemon verbena, garlic, cheese and nuts in a food processor and pulse to puree. Slowly add the olive oil with the processor running until the mixture thickens and emulsifies, about 1 minute.
Season to taste with salt and pepper. The pesto will keep in the refrigerator for 7 to 10 days, or it may be frozen for up to 3 months. Place the grill wok or basket directly over the fire and stir-grill, tossing the beans with wooden paddles or grill spatulas until crisptender, about 5 to 8 minutes. Transfer the grilled beans to a large bowl and toss with about 1⁄4 cup of the Lemon Verbena Pesto or to taste.
