he dawn of a new year marks a great time to turn over a new leaf. Many people begin a new year by making resolutions, and aspiring to eat healthier is annually among the most popular pledges health-conscious individuals make.
• Treat yourself, but only periodically. It’s unreasonable and potentially counterproductive to avoid foods seen as treats completely. Cutting out indulgent foods may seem appropriate, but such an approach could make you miserable, and a diet that sparks feelings of misery will prove harder to commit to than one that allows for the occasional indulgence. Moderation is the name of the game, and that should be a rule of thumb for both healthy foods and indulgences. Don’t make indulgences part of your daily routine, even if you eat them in moderation. Rather, save treats for special occasions, and even then only eat them in moderation.
A recent Statista survey of hundreds of people across the globe found that eating healthier was the second most popular New Year’s resolution of 2023. 50 percent of respondents indicated they set goals to eat healthier in the year ahead. Though each year is different, it’s fair to assume a similarly large percentage of resolution-minded individuals will aspire to eat healthier over the next 12 months. As people begin their journeys to a healthier lifestyle, they can consider these strategies to stay the course with a new diet.
• Consider eating less, but more frequently. Data is conflicting regarding eating smaller but more frequent meals. A 2015 study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found that individuals with six or more eating occasions in 24 hours had a lower mean body mass index than those with four or fewer eating occasions in 24 hours. The researchers behind the study concluded that eating a larger number of small meals throughout the day may be associated with improved diet quality and lower BMI. From cookies and pies to brittles and fudge, there’s no shortage of sweet treats come the holiday season. But who’s recipe collection couldn’t benefit from another delicious addition? That’s just what can be found in “Toffee Cheesecake Bars” from “Taste of Home Healthy Cooking Cookbook” (RDA Enthusiast Brands) by the Taste of Home/Reader’s Digest Kitchens.

1. In a small bowl, combine the flour, confectioners’ sugar, cocoa and baking soda. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Press in the bottom of an ungreased 13-inch x 9-inch baking dish. Bake at 350 F for 12 to 15 minutes or until set. 2. In a large bowl, beat cream cheese until fluffy. Add the milk, eggs and vanilla; beat until smooth. Stir in 3⁄4 cup toffee bits. Pour over crust. Bake 18 to 22 minutes longer or until center is almost set. 3. Cool on a wire rack for 15 minutes. • Confirm restaurants are open. Many restaurants close on major holidays to enable staff to spend time with their own family members. This may be more so for Thanksgiving and Christmas than with week-long celebrations like Chanukah and Kwanzaa. Verify with restaurants if they have holiday hours, and more importantly, that they will be open on the day you will be dining out. Christmas Day falls on a Monday in 2023, which typically is a day when many restaurants are closed. • Make a reservation. If you find an establishment open for the holiday, reserve a table early. Also, some restaurants may ask for a deposit on reservations to ensure you show up. • Expect some menu changes. To account for reduced staff or even ease in meal service, some restaurants may opt for a price-fixed holiday menu or a limited menu from their typical offerings. Benner's Farm is a private fifteen-acre family homestead in East Setauket, first farmed in the 1700's. Each year they provide thousands of people a sense of what it was like to live on a small farm in years past. The Benner’s are the seventh family to farm this land, and they have been farming organically since the late nineteen seventies in their family garden and fields of strawberries. Losquadro has announced the return of the annual Brookhaven Town Holiday Spectacular, an indoor, walk-through holiday light show benefiting the Holtsville Ecology Site. Over the years, thousands of families have walked through the winter wonderland of lighted, festive displays, before stopping to take their photos with Santa in his workshop. Admission to this event is $10 per adult; $8 for seniors, veterans and children under 12; children 3 and under are free. Tickets must be purchased in advance at BrookhavenNY.gov/Holiday . Photos available with Santa for an additional fee; credit cards only, no cash accepted. All proceeds benefit the Holtsville Ecology Site and go directly to the feed and care of the more than 100 animals residing there. “This is a fun-filled, affordable entertainment option for families who want to come and enjoy the spirit of the holidays,” Superintendent Losquadro said. “I want to thank my staff at the Ecology Site for working so diligently to transform the greenhouses and make this event so memorable. Neighborhood News: Over $32,000 Raised For Long Island Veterans
T
he TCS New York City Marathon represents the best of New York—when all New Yorkers come together to support each other and cheer on their neighbors. For the seventh year, United Way of Long Island was selected as a charity partner for the 2023 TCS New York City Marathon. United Way of Long Island’s Team Mission United runners finished the 26.2-mile course, raising over $32,000 in support of U.S. military veterans and their families on Long Island. Every runner has their own unique story for why they run. Christine Borg (Huntington, NY) Christine finished her first ever marathon first among the Mission United Team runners in three and a half hours. As a former D1 athlete, running the NYC Marathon had always been on her bucket list. Christine knew training for the marathon would take dedication and sacrifice, especially after breaking her back in 2016, but her inspiration was the Long Island veterans who dedicated their lives to protecting our country. “The Mission United cause holds an important place in my heart and supports veterans who gave so much for our country. Showcasing my effort toward training lets me teach my three young boys what giving back means,” Christine said. Andrew Tulenko (East Northport, NY) Andrew, a former high school and college runner, completed the race in four hours and 18 minutes. He is a National Grid engineer and a Naval Reservist, originally from Colorado, who joined the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy here on Long Island, where he met his wife and built a family. “I wanted to run in support of Mission United because I believe in the value that its various programs provide to veterans,” Andrew said. “Adjusting back to civilian life and continuing to provide for their families can be difficult, so veterans should have the best support possible. Not only is this important for veterans themselves, but also for society. I wanted to take this opportunity to help contribute and build awareness for this cause.” Alma Rocha (Freeport, NY) Alma, a Freeport Elementary School Principal, finished her 32nd marathon in six hours and 47 minutes. "The first time I ran the Long Island Half Marathon was the first time I saw veterans running with just one limb,” Alma said. “In Mexico where I grew up, war wasn’t something I thought about often. So, when I ran the half marathon, it was real for me to see someone with a lost arm or leg. The impact that had on me to be able to come back to the world with crutches or wheelchairs takes my heart. I thought, if veterans can run this, what can I do?" Alma ran “not for recognition but to contribute to United Way’s Mission United." Since 2016, Team Mission United has raised more than $200,000 for veterans through runners’ participation in the TCS New York City Marathon. To participate in this once-ina-lifetime race, each Team Mission United member made a minimum fundraising commitment of $3,000. “We couldn’t be prouder of all the work our runners have put in throughout these past twelve months,” said Theresa A.
