Bayport-Blue Point Girls Track And Field Shatters Record
B
ayport-Blue Point High School’s girls track and field team has had a great run in the last few weeks. On Jan. 6, students Ansley B., Ava B., Sophia M. and Maggie Y. ran a 4x400 relay at four minutes and two seconds, a New York State leading time, at the Armory Hispanic Games. The time shattered the former Bayport-Blue Point High School record of four minutes and five seconds and qualified the students for nationals. A few days later, the students were back at the Armory, where they ran the race again in the same time, qualifying them for the prestigious Millrose Games in February. After the Millrose trials, the students ran a 4x800 meter relay at Yale University. The relay team of Ansley B., Ava B., Sophia M. and Maddie J. won the race, set a new meet record, qualified for nationals and broke the former school record set in 2002 by 16 seconds. They now hold
the number one time in the entire country and BayportBlue Point High School’s team is now the seventh fastest 4x800 team in Suffolk County history. The district congratulates these outstanding student-athletes on their groundbreaking accomplishment.

2. R equest an energy audit of your home. With a home energy audit, you can obtain your Energy Star rating, important information regarding your energy usage, and identify sources of energy loss, which you can then take actions to correct. Resources for obtaining a professional energy audit or conducting one yourself can be found at energy.gov. 3. B eat the peak. Ask your utility provider about discounted rates. Some offer cheaper rates during parts of the day when general usage is down — think early in the day or late at night. Strategically tackle your energy bills by doing laundry and other energy-intensive chores at offpeak times. 4. T ake advantage of tax credits. Making energy improvements to your home? The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 expanded the tax credit amounts and types of qualifying expenses available. Look for tax credits on items like new energy-efficient exterior doors, windows, central air conditioners, water heaters, furnaces, boilers and heat pumps.

Tips To Lower Your Energy Costs This Winter
5. U tilize electric technology. Consider installing a smart thermostat, smart switches, or smart home devices for energy-intensive household items like, lights and heating systems. Smart technology is designed to automatically adjust to your needs, helping you save energy and money.
T
he U.S. Department of Energy reports that low-income households face an energy burden – the portion of income spent on home energy costs – three times higher than other households, leading to tough budgeting decisions for many Americans.
During a long cold winter, energy-efficient technologies and updates can help you weather the season, for a cozier home and a lower-carbon future. (StatePoint)
Energy efficiency is an important way to tackle home energy costs and can also support sustainability. Knowing that these issues are important to their customers and communities, Wells Fargo contributed more than $19 million last year to nonprofits that aim to advance sustainability, including a $500,000 grant to the Beneficial Electrification League. Whether your motivations are economic, sustainabilityrelated or both, Keith Dennis, president of the Beneficial Electrification League, offers these smart tips to help you curb your energy consumption this winter: 1. Give energy-efficient holiday gifts. Leverage spending on birthdays and other special occasions on items that can help you save down the line by giving energy-efficient gifts to members of your household. Look for gas alternative products like electric lawn tools, bikes and scooters, smart devices and appliances. Energy-efficient electric products offer good results, are often more cost efficient and support sustainability. Certain retrofits, updates and upgrades may even qualify your household for additional savings via a rebate, thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. www.longislandmediagroup.com

where he meets a plucky advertising executive. The two clash before they discover feelings for each other. • “The Princess Bride” (1987): This movie has withstood the test of time. It has a little bit of everything: swordfights, revenge, a giant, and, of course, a heartwarming love story at its core. • “The Wedding Singer” (1998): Despite coming out in the 1990s, this film brings on all the campy 1980’s nostalgia, including a hit soundtrack of favorite songs from that decade. Although not everyone is a fan of Adam Sandler’s comedic antics, this movie is less slapstick and more heartfelt. It’s one of a few where Sandler has paired with Drew Barrymore in the lead roles. Check out “50 First Dates” if you want a fun Sandler-Barrymore double feature. • “Love, Simon” (2018): In this movie, Simon, a high school student, hasn’t yet come out to his friends and family, but has been exploring a budding romance with an anonymous boy online. The big reveal of that boy’s identity is a moment of anticipation. • “Pride and Prejudice” (2005): Jane Austen’s classic novel has undergone many interpretations on the silver screen. The 2005 version starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen as Elizabeth and Darcy is a fan favorite. With its beautiful tableaus and enchanting soundtrack, viewers can’t help but root for this unlikely couple.
Cozy Up To These Romantic Films This Valentine’s Day
A
number of people feel that nothing beats a quiet evening in with the one you love on Valentine’s Day. Watching a romantic film together can be a way to cap the night off. There are plenty of films that focus on Valentine’s Day or have a larger romantic theme. Such movies are ideal for date nights and the ultimate date night: Valentine’s Day.
• “Always Be My Maybe” (2019): This Netflix original movie has Ali Wong and Randall Park playing former childhood best friends with some unfinished business. When they are reunited as adults on different paths, will they find a connection? Keanu Reeves has a guest cameo. • “Chocolat” (2000): A mysterious French woman and her young daughter open a chocolate shop in a remote place where villagers are afraid of change. Her confections seemingly have magical powers to fix the ills of people, if only the shopkeeper can lure the stubborn to give them a taste. Johnny Depp stars as a love interest.
• “Valentine’s Day” (2010): This aptly titled film takes place on — you guessed it — February 14th. It has a who’s who cast of well-known actors like Jennifer Garner, Shirley MacLaine and Bradley Cooper. Various storylines intersect among the characters as Los Angeles residents work their way through the highs and lows of love on Valentine’s Day. • “Notting Hill” (1999): If Meg Ryan is the queen of rom-coms, Hugh Grant may be the king. In this movie, • “Kate & Leopold” (2001): While rom-com fans are an unassuming British book shop owner gets cast into used to seeing Meg Ryan teamed up with Tom Hanks, the limelight when a famous American actress played in this tale she’s paired with Hugh Jackman. Jackman by Julia Roberts hides in the stacks and eventually is a duke from 1876 who inadvertently finds himself traveling through time to modern-day New York City, becomes more than just a customer. www.longislandmediagroup.com

Ricotta Cheesecake With Coffee and Chocolate
(Tortino al caffè e ciccolato)
Serves 8 to 10
Cheesecake Makes A Decadent Valentine’s Day Treat
A
cheesecake recipe can be useful on any special occasion, especially on Valentine’s Day. For many people, cheesecake is not cheesecake without the addition of ricotta cheese. While ricotta is included in savory dishes like lasagna or manicotti, it is at home in desserts like cheesecake as well. Ricotta means “recooked” in Italian, and its production involves reheating the whey left over from making other cheeses, like mozzarella. Its texture is like a creamy/grainy, thick sour cream. Ricotta is included in this recipe for “Ricotta Cheesecake With Coffee and Chocolate” from “Nick Stellino’s Family Kitchen” (G.P. Putnam’s Sons) by Nick Stellino, but it is not the only flavorful ingredient in this decadent dish. Coffee liqueur, chocolate, and lemon zest add to the complex profile — which only gets more pronounced if you prepare this cake a day in advance. www.longislandmediagroup.com
1
cup graham cracker crumbs
2
tablespoons butter, melted
2
tablespoons sugar, plus 1⁄2 cup sug ar
2
lbs. ricotta cheese, drained of exc ess liquid
8
eggs, separated
1/2
cup cream
1/4
cup espresso or extra strong coffee,
1/4
cup coffee liqueur
1
teaspoon finely grated lemon zest
1/2
teaspoon salt
1
cup semi-sweet chocolate morsels
cooled
Directions: Preheat the oven to 325 F. Make a graham cracker crust by mixing the melted butter with the crumbs and sugar. Press into the bottom of a 9-inch springform pan. Mix the ricotta, sugar, egg yolks, cream, espresso, coffee liqueur, lemon zest, and salt until creamy. In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites until they form stiff peaks. Carefully fold the egg whites into the ricotta mixture. Stir in the chocolate morsels and pour onto the prepared crumb crust. Bake the cake for 1 hour and 15 minutes or until just set in the middle. The cake will still seem wobbly but will be lightly browned and cracked around the edges. Remove the cake from the oven and cool on a rack for 30 minutes. Refrigerate the cheesecake for at least 6 hours or overnight before running a sharp knife along the edge of the cake and removing the pan. Cut into wedges to serve. Garnish with shaved chocolate and strawberries, if desired.

Stony Brook Only Hospital On Long Island To Be Named Among America's 50 Best Hospitals
F
or the second year in a row, Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH) has achieved the highest level of national recognition as one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals from Healthgrades, a leading resource that evaluates approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide. This achievement places SBUH among the top 1% of hospitals nationwide reflecting its commitment to exceptional patient care. SBUH is the only hospital on Long Island to be ranked among the 50 Best Hospitals. As part of this ranking, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital also shares in this recognition. “Stony Brook’s steady increase in rankings — from the top 250 since 2015, to the top 100 since 2019, and now the top 50 for two years in a row is a reflection of our steadfast commitment to bring the best in care to our patients,” says William A. Wertheim, MD, MBA, Interim Executive Vice President, Stony Brook Medicine.
To determine the top hospitals for 2024, Healthgrades evaluated risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates for more than 30 conditions and procedures at approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide. The 2024 Healthgrades analysis revealed significant variation in hospital performance, making it increasingly important to seek care at top-rated programs. From 2020-2022, if all hospitals, as a group, performed similarly to America’s 50 Best Hospitals, 176,124 lives could potentially have been saved. “Healthgrades commends Stony Brook University Hospital for their leadership and continued dedication to high quality care,” says Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer and Head of Data Science at Healthgrades. “As one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals, Stony Brook University Hospital is elevating the standard for quality care nationwide and ensuring superior outcomes for the patients in their community.” Stony Brook University Hospital has also been recognized with national Healthgrades Excellence Awards, five-star (the highest level) national ratings and New York State top five rankings for several specialties. produced by Hallmark and other greeting card companies, people used to send one another cards customized with personalized messages. Pampering gentlemen It is common in North America for Valentine's Day celebrations to lean significantly toward favoring women, who are often on the receiving end of flowers and chocolates. However, in South Korea and Japan, it is the men who are pampered with such gifts. Women purchase chocolates for their male partners, family members, and coworkers as tokens of appreciation and affection. Never fear, a month later on White Day (March 14) men reciprocate with candy, cake, and flowers. Bouquets These days a dozen long-stemmed red roses might be the norm for Valentine's Day gifting. However, roses weren't always the preferred flower for the holiday. History.com reports that, in the nineteenth century, bouquets might contain all sorts of flowers, each chosen to convey certain messages. Individuals can research the meanings behind certain flowers and create a Valentine's Day gift this year that expresses exactly what they are feeling. Puzzle purses Sweethearts in Victorian England created "puzzle purses," which were a series of love letters that could be read separately, but also fit together to create a design and message. These intricately folded sheets of paper had parts of messages or verses written on different corners and were meant to be read in a specific order.
Valentine’s Day Traditions
Heart-shaped chocolate boxes
V
alentine's Day is a day of love nestled in the middle of February. Sweethearts use Valentine's Day as an opportunity to show the people they care about just how deep those feelings run. A 2023 survey from the National Retail Federation found consumers expected to spend $25.9 billion on Valentine's Day, up from $23.9 billion in 2022. Forecasters suspect spending is likely to increase this year as well. Valentine's Day is awash in many different customs. Here's a deep look at some of those enduring traditions and others that some may feel should be brought back into favor or adopted entirely.
British chocolatier Richard Cadbury is credited with creating the first heart-shaped box for Valentine's Day. The boxes were intended to be so beautiful they would be kept to hold trinkets or love letters. Ornate chocolate boxes are not quite as common today, although the gifting of chocolate for the holiday is still strong. Celebrating in June? Many Brazilians skip Valentine's Day in February and choose to celebrate Saint Anthony, the patron saint of marriage and matchmaking, on June 12. Celebrating both is fine for those who prefer to shower affection on loved ones multiple times a year. Valentine's Day traditions are still strong and can add a little something extra to celebrations this February.
Handwritten cards It's a common scene each year in card retailers and pharmacies: people three-deep in the aisle trying to pick out Valentine's Day cards in the eleventh hour. People can save themselves the hassle of fighting the crowds if they make their own handmade cards. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, sweethearts created unique cards from scratch, according to Country Living. And prior to products www.longislandmediagroup.com

enhancements, such as the installation of six catch basins, a new concrete walkway, updated foundation curbing, a water dam, and additional drywells, ensure a solid foundation for the future. Essential repairs extend to the parking lot and internal spaces, encompassing sheetrock and drywall patching, improved insulation, repainting of the Jeanie Tengelsen and Strolling Galleries, installation of new flooring, and studio enhancements for improved lighting and storage. The total investment in these efforts amounts to approximately $500,000, entirely funded through internal resources. The Art League of Long Island expresses immense gratitude for the support received from the community, with special acknowledgment to Home Depot, contributing $10,000 worth of kitchen furniture and furnishings, and Zurn who generously donated $11,000 in plumbing products. All donations contribute to aligning programs with the renewed space and establishing an endowment for future sustainability. Established in 1955, the Art League of Long Island is dedicated to providing visual arts education for artists of all ages and skill levels. Committed to fostering creativity, the Art League serves as a platform for artists to thrive, offering diverse programs, exhibitions, and outreach initiatives.

Grand Reopening Of The Art League Of Long Island: A Beacon Of Light And Creativity Emerges Anew
T
he Art League of Long Island (ALLI) proudly announces the grand reopening of its cherished space after enduring significant water damage in September due to flooding rains. Following an extensive and diligently managed reconstruction effort led by Anthony Lauto of Camber Strategies, ALLI stands renewed and fortified from the ground up. The comprehensive reconstruction effort included renovations to both the building and grounds. Critical infrastructure www.longislandmediagroup.com
Despite facing challenges, the Art League community remained resilient. Temporary accommodations were arranged for classes and exhibitions through the "On The Move" campaign, hosted by supportive partners such as Spirit of Huntington, Nassau Community College's Art Department, Nassau County Museum of Art, and the Half Hollow Hills and Northport School Districts. Classes in ceramics, watercolor, pastels, jewelry, collage, and painting, not to mention our Teen and Young Artist programs found satellite homes. They also partnered with Empire Mazda of Huntington, to host an onsite Instructor’s Exhibition that had previously opened on January 20, 2024. The Members' Exhibition, opening on February 10, 2024, which marks the inaugural exhibit in the newly reconstructed Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery. Simultaneously, the annual GoAPE High School Student Exhibition will be showcased at the end of the month in the Strolling Gallery. Classes resumed on February 6, 2024, in freshly repaired, cleaned, and painted studios, with a Grand Reopening Open House scheduled for March 23rd. Looking toward the future, ALLI is working hard to reestablish its LGBTQIA+, Mental Health and Veteran programs within the next month. The Art League has also hired new instructors and scheduled new classes, offering even more time slots and diversity. Marianne Della Croce, Executive Director, expresses her delight, stating, "The buzz of excitement is palpable among all staff and instructors as we return to the building. We invite everyone to join us in celebrating this significant milestone. We are ready to open the doors on a new era at the Art League of Long Island."

ith the big game on the horizon, football fans would be wise to ready their culinary arsenal. Whether you’re hosting at home or going to a game watch at a fellow fan’s house, keep in mind that food and football are a great match. Loaded Beef Nachos Serves 4
Certain dishes have long since staked their claim on the game watch dinner and snacking tables, and nachos certainly need no introduction to football fans. Football fans can try this recipe for “Loaded Beef Nachos” courtesy of AllRecipes.com.
Taco Seasoning: 5
teaspoons paprika
1 1⁄4
teaspoons garlic powder
1 1⁄4
teaspoons ground cumin
1 1⁄4
teaspoons onion powder
1
teaspoon chili powder
1
teaspoon oregano leaves
1 1⁄2
teaspoons salt
Nachos: 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 pound ground beef 1 cup diced onion 1 cup diced green bell pepper 1 10-ounce can diced tomatoes with green chiles (such as RO-TEL®) 1 15-ounce can Mexican-style corn (optional) 1 16-ounce can refried beans 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese, or as needed 4 ounces tortilla chips, or as needed Toppings (optional): 1⁄2 cup sour cream (optional) 1⁄2 cup salsa (optional) 1⁄4 cup sliced black olives (optional) 1⁄4 cup sliced jalapeños (optional) 1⁄4 cup green onion www.longislandmediagroup.com
Directions: For taco seasoning: Stir paprika, garlic powder, cumin, onion powder, chili powder, oregano, and salt together in a small bowl; set aside. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat; cook and stir ground beef in the hot skillet until browned and crumbly, 5 to 7 minutes. Stir in onion and green pepper; cook and stir with oil and juices from browned meat until much of the liquid has evaporated, about 2 minutes more. Stir 1⁄2 can diced tomatoes with chilies and Mexican-style corn into skillet. Season beef mixture to taste with prepared taco seasoning mix. Stir together the remaining 1⁄2 can diced tomatoes with chilies and refried beans in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high until heated through, stirring every 30 seconds, 1 to 3 minutes. To assemble nachos: Lay half of tortilla chips in a single layer on a microwave-safe plate, then drop teaspoons of refried beans onto chips, followed by meat mixture and shredded cheese. Repeat with remaining chips, beans, meat, and cheese to make a second layer. Microwave on high until cheese is melted and nachos are warm, 2 to 3 minutes. Top with sour cream, salsa, olives, jalapeños, and green onion as desired. EDITION SEVEN
