Tips To Stay The Course With A New Diet

New Year's 2023/2024

fore bedtime and resist the urge to snack after dinnertime.

T

he dawn of a new year marks a great time to turn over a new leaf. Many people begin a new year by making resolutions, and aspiring to eat healthier is annually among the most popular pledges health-conscious individuals make.

• Treat yourself, but only periodically. It’s unreasonable and potentially counterproductive to avoid foods seen as treats completely. Cutting out indulgent foods may seem appropriate, but such an approach could make you miserable, and a diet that sparks feelings of misery will prove harder to commit to than one that allows for the occasional indulgence. Moderation is the name of the game, and that should be a rule of thumb for both healthy foods and indulgences. Don’t make indulgences part of your daily routine, even if you eat them in moderation. Rather, save treats for special occasions, and even then only eat them in moderation.

A recent Statista survey of hundreds of people across the globe found that eating healthier was the second most popular New Year’s resolution of 2023. 50 percent of respondents indicated they set goals to eat healthier in the year ahead. Though each year is different, it’s fair to assume a similarly large percentage of resolution-minded individuals will aspire to eat healthier over the next 12 months. As people begin their journeys to a healthier lifestyle, they can consider these strategies to stay the course with a new diet.

• Consider eating less, but more frequently. Data is conflicting regarding eating smaller but more frequent meals. A 2015 study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found that individuals with six or more eating occasions in 24 hours had a lower mean body mass index than those with four or fewer eating occasions in 24 hours. The researchers behind the study concluded that eating a larger number of small meals throughout the day may be associated with improved diet quality and lower BMI. This approach is commonly referred to as “grazing,” and some research has • Do not eat too close to bedtime. A 2014 study published in indicated it has no metabolic advantage over other approaches the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics found that eating more of a day’s total energy intake in the evening is associated to eating. So what to make of the mixed results? Dieters can decide for themselves and eat more frequent but smaller, healthier with a higher risk of being overweight or obese. The researchmeals to combat hunger pangs that can arise when switching ers behind the study concluded that eating more of the day’s energy intake at midday can lower the risk of being overweight to a new diet. If hunger no longer poses a threat that can derail your diet, then this approach might increase the chances you or obese. Individuals are more likely to stay the course when they see positive results, so try to eat dinner several hours bestay committed to eating right. www.longislandmediagroup.com

Revamping Resolutions: Setting Achievable New Year’s Goals By Natalie Raccuglia

A

s the clock strikes midnight, a wave of determination sweeps the globe, marking the beginning of a year filled with promises of change and growth. Despite the sincerity behind these resolutions, by February they tend to dwindle into dreams we promise ourselves we will try again next year. But in order to stray away from another year of unfulfilled goals, changing your approach might be the solution to turn any dream into a tangible accomplishment.

New Year's 2023/2024

Accountability & Support There’s nothing better than having a strong support system. Sharing resolutions with family and friends with similar goals can provide both parties with accountability and support. Encouragement from others might further help you on your path to stay committed and motivated. Embrace Improvement Resolutions can be a continuous journey and it’s not always something that can be achieved overnight. If your goal is something that might take time, remember to make room for improvements. Consider each day an opportunity to better yourself however that might look like. By setting realistic and purpose-driven resolutions, you can transform your yearly promises into something sustainable for the long haul or even achieve something just for this season. Happy New Year! Here’s to a year filled with progress, growth, and achievements.

Reflect On The Past Before you dive into new resolutions, take a moment to reminisce on previous year’s goals. Celebrate every success and likewise, acknowledge lessons learned from any unmet expectations. By doing so, you allow yourself to craft more realistic and purposeful resolutions. Prioritize Your Well-Being Make sure to take care of both your mental and physical health in order to care for your overall well-being. Prioritize exercise, a good amount of sleep, and nutritional eating habits to create a healthy balanced lifestyle. www.longislandmediagroup.com

New Year's 2023/2024

• Confirm restaurants are open. Many restaurants close on major holidays to enable staff to spend time with their own family members. This may be more so for Thanksgiving and Christmas than with week-long celebrations like Chanukah and Kwanzaa. Verify with restaurants if they have holiday hours, and more importantly, that they will be open on the day you will be dining out. Christmas Day falls on a Monday in 2023, which typically is a day when many restaurants are closed. • Make a reservation. If you find an establishment open for the holiday, reserve a table early. Also, some restaurants may ask for a deposit on reservations to ensure you show up. • Expect some menu changes. To account for reduced staff or even ease in meal service, some restaurants may opt for a price-fixed holiday menu or a limited menu from their typical offerings. Some may showcase a seasonal menu that caters to holiday favorites they think diners will expect. There also may be fewer substitutions or customizations allowed. • Avoid peak dining times. Restaurants may fill up after church services or around dinner time. Consider reserving your table for a less popular hour to reduce the propensity for long waits or being rushed out. • Be patient. Kitchens can get backed up on a holiday, and it may take longer than expected for food to make it out to tables. Cut kitchen employees and servers a break as they are likely frazzled. They are trying their best to service all patrons. • Plan to tip generously. It’s the season of giving, and you should make sure you take care of your server. You can make the day even brighter with some words of gratitude and a nice gratuity.

A Guide To Dining Out For The Holidays

F

or some people, there is no better way to celebrate the holidays than to spend time with friends and loved ones around the dinner table. Although cooking and dining at home are popular this time of year, some celebrants may not have the time or the inclination to host the holidays at home. Preparing and serving holiday meals to guests can be timeconsuming. In fact, many holiday hosts and hostesses lament that hosting duties can compromise the time they get to spend with the ones they love each year. Dining out is one way to save time and free up more moments for interacting without the pressure of food shopping, cooking, and cleanup. The following are some tips for families who opt to dine out for the holidays. www.longislandmediagroup.com

following tips can put people on a positive path at the start of each day. Begin the night before. Certain mental health experts suggest clearing the mind in the evening to reduce stressful thinking and create the mental capacity to wind down and relax. Being well-rested can improve mood. Know your weaknesses. Recognize where you may need some help as you strive to be more optimistic. Map out the behaviors you want to change, and then be intentional about how you want your day to go and which actions will get you there. Take a technology pause. Do not check email or text messages right after opening your eyes. Similarly, avoid reading the news or watching news programs on television too early. Negative or scandalous stories often get the most clicks or views, and coming across upsetting information at the outset of the day can adversely affect your mood.

How To Begin The Day In A Positive Frame Of Mind

E

ach new day brings the potential for change, even amid the routine of the daily grind. When people start the day with positive thoughts, it can affect how they behave and see themselves throughout the day, and may even benefit their overall health. Focusing on having a positive mindset in 2024 is a great resolution, but it’s never too early to start! The

Recognize the good people are doing. When you open your eyes and focus on the positives, you'll see all the good that other people are doing around you. Offering compliments or acknowledging others' actions, whether large or small, puts positivity out there. Focus on gratitude. Take a few moments at the start of each day to mentally list all the things you are grateful for. This may be that you have a cozy home or that you are healthy. Even stressful situations or people can be means for gratitude. Boisterous toddlers may be a handful, but you can be grateful for the ability to have had children when so many are not able.

Six Popular Health - Based Resolutions

Resolve to cut down on alcohol consumption if you are drinking more than two drinks per day. 3. Address stress. It’s easy to underestimate the effects of stress on the mind and body. Left unchecked, stress can contribute to heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure, says the Mayo Clinic. Resolving to reduce stress by adopting certain techniques can improve self-esteem and mood.

R

esolutions that focus on health and fitness are made each year. Numerous people are eager to lose weight, improve their physical fitness levels, or even stop habits that can hinder their mental or physical wellness. As the new year ticks closer, individuals can explore these popular resolutions as they get on the path to better health. 1. Commit to quit. The American Cancer Society says about half of all Americans who keep smoking will die due to the habit. Smoking kills more Americans than alcohol, car accidents, guns, HIV, and illegal drugs combined. Smoking not only causes cancer, but it also damages nearly every part of the body, including the bones, reproductive organs, mouth, skin, eyes, and blood vessels. Quitting can help reverse the effects of years of smoking. 2. Limit alcohol intake. The phrase “everything in moderation” applies to alcohol consumption. Excessive consumption of alcohol can lead to liver and kidney damage. When these organs are not functioning properly, they cannot filter toxins out of the body, resulting in potentially irreparable damage. www.longislandmediagroup.com

New Year's 2023/2024

4. Exercise more readily. Physician Partners of America states that exercise can improve mood and sleep, help people control their weight, reduce the risk of heart disease, improve bone and muscle strength, and potentially extend their lives. Resolving to exercise doesn’t require drastic changes. Small steps can add up to big results. 5. Visit the doctor. Too often people put off going to the doctor until something needs to be fixed with their health. It is much better to be proactive and avoid illness through testing and conversations with a physician. Doctors can recognize symptoms and risk factors that could be indicative of future illness. Routine physical exams also will check cholesterol and glucose levels, monitor blood pressure, and include other preventive care options. 6. Improve your diet. Eating more meals at home and incorporating more fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein into your meals can improve overall health.
