Fun Ways To Celebrate The Arrival Of Spring
S
pring is a season of rebirth in more ways than one. Spring is when certain animals emerge from hibernation, while many species lay eggs or give birth this time of year. Flowers and trees also bloom in spring, providing spectacular foliage and awe-inspiring color.
People also may feel like they have a new lease on life as they shake away the doldrums of winter and embrace longer hours of sunlight and warmer temperatures. The arrival of spring is worthy of celebration, and these activities and ideas can be enjoyable ways to spend the first day of spring. • Spend time outdoors. One is never too old for a picnic in a park or a bike ride along the trails. Spending time outdoors is beneficial because it exposes people to sunlight, which is a precursor to the development of vitamin D. Vitamin D affects muscles, joints and tissues. It also can affect mood.
• Plant a tree. Honor the first day of spring, and Earth Day shortly thereafter, by planting trees. Trees provide habitats for wildlife, create shade, reduce air pollution by filtering the air, and produce oxygen. A sapling is a mangeable tree to plant and something children can do as well.
• Enjoy spring crafts. Grab an inexpensive canvas and paint a landscape that is in full bloom. Use quick-set plaster to create stepping stones embedded with mosaic glass pieces for color that can be added to the backyard. • Host a spring potluck. Put fresh spring vegetables and
fruits on display. Options include artichokes, apricots, asparagus, carrots, dandelion greens, and radishes. Put together a pasta primavera, which essentially is a spring pasta dish laden with fresh vegetables. • Decorate with flowers. Bring fresh flowers indoors and put them on display in vases or table centerpieces. Cut stems on a 45-degree angle underwater to help flowers last longer. In addition, choose floral themed curtains and throw pillows to add some spring decor. • Create a water feature. The sound and sights of cascading water can be both relaxing and picturesque. A water feature can be something as simple as a small fountain or more elaborate like a koi pond. Spring is a time of year when people can enjoy seasonal activities that make the most of the warmer weather and blooming landscape.
Events Can Foster A Strong Sense Of Community

vents that bring residents of a community together in one place have been on the back burner in recent years. As the world has dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic, communities have scaled back on public events in the hopes of limiting crowds and preventing the spread of the virus. Since 2021, such restrictions have been loosened, especially in spring and summer. The return of spring marks a great time for local leaders to add more events to their community calendars. The following are some fun event ideas that can help communities reconnect in the months to come. • Crafts festival: The digital advertising agency NMPi noted in a report titled “Impact of COVID-19 on Arts & Crafts Retail” that the rise in pandemicrelated self-isolation led to an increased demand for arts-andcrafts. As the world emerges from the pandemic, community leaders can provide residents
an opportunity to showcase their newfound talents by hosting a crafts festival. Invite established professionals to showcase and sell their wares and encourage local hobbyists to do the same. This is a great way to promote local businesses and connect residents with neighbors who love to spend time working on arts and crafts. • Concert series: Concert series are fun and lucrative for local businesses. analysis of a popular local concert series in northern New York State determined that a concert series sponsored by the Disabled Persons Action Organization allowed more than $1.6 million to flow through local economies. That’s welcome news for local businesses that have been hit hard by the pandemic, and it’s also welcome news for leaders who want to rebuild a sense of community in their

towns and cities. Families and local residents can enjoy live music and take pride knowing that each ice cream cone, hot dog or cold beverage they buy at a concert is helping local businesses rebound from a tough stretch. • Farmers market: Another way to promote local businesses and public health is to host weekly farmers markets. Buying locally grown foods reduces food miles, a term that refers to the distance food travels before it reaches grocery stores. Reduced food miles means less fuel consumption and reduced air pollution, both of which benefit the environment and human health, but farmers markets do more than that, as they provide access to healthy foods to individuals who might otherwise be unable to find fresh fruits and vegetables. Farmers markets support local farmers and growers, reassuring consumers that their money is going back into their own communities.

ne of the best ways to achieve instant curb appeal, according to the experts, is to effectively layer shrubs, plants and flowers in your front yard. Doing so can create a cohesive visual experience that naturally guides visitors to the front door. Landscape designer Doug Scott describes plant layering in art terms: “Just like in a painting, you need to have a background, a middle ground and a foreground. Each layer serves a purpose, and there’s no more important place for them to be on full display than your home’s entrance. To help homeowners understand the purpose of plant layering and identify the best types of plants for each layer, Scott has joined forces with Exmark, a leading manufacturer of commercial mowers and equipment for 1. he National Association of Landscape Professionals notes that lawns can support a significant number of insects feeding on them because the grass grows much faster than the insects can damage it. Noticeable damage, such as brown patches in the grass, severed roots and grass that is easily pulled up, indicate that insect infestations are significant enough to require intervention. Lawn care professionals can work with homeowners to develop solutions to address insect infestations. Infestation prevention involves a handful of strategies, not the least of which is ensuring a lawn is properly cared for. Such care delivers nutrients to the lawn and reduces its risk of becoming undernourished. Undernourished lawns are more vulnerable to insect infestations and weeds.

them, you and your visitors will always have something green to look at. This layer provides a cohesive backdrop and a bit of living color in every season. 2. Middle Ground: Here’s where to step it down a notch in height and add interesting shapes, colors or stripes that provide contrast against the darker green of the background layer. Herbaceous perennials, like lavender, are a good choice for this purpose. 3. Foreground: Finally, the foreground layer should help transition the planting beds to your lawn space or sidewalk, and should therefore be lower than the back two layers. It’s also where you can keep things fresh and get your hands dirty throughout the year by changing out annuals with the seasons. Or, if you want a lower-maintenance entrance, you can choose smaller perennials, evergreens or creeping ground covers. Use the foreground layer as an opportunity to add pops of color at ground level and draw attention to your home’s entrance. Scott lays out a few other important tips to keep in mind: • Choose plants consistent with your home’s style. For instance, if you have a craftsman home, you should probably skip tropical plants. Or, if your home

is more minimalist, avoid an overabundance of different plants. • Don’t obstruct views of your front door from the street with plants. Likewise, visitors shouldn’t have to maneuver around plants as they make their way down the sidewalk. Neither is convenient or welcoming, so you’ll either need to keep pruning plants to size, or choose plants that won’t overgrow their space without a ton of pruning. • To make your entrance “the star” it should be, the plant material in the rest of your front yard shouldn’t be distracting. May Day Traditions
ay Day has a long and storied history. May Day was initially designated to welcome the change in season, notably spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Druids and ancient Gaelic people would have festivals to celebrate the return of life and fertility to the world. One popular May Day tradition involved the maypole, which can be traced back to Medieval times. May Day festivities involved dancing around the maypole, which was adorned with colorful ribbons and streamers. Some historians surmise that these ritualistic dances were also courtship dances and fertility rituals. In the 19th century, May Day celebrations evolved from one celebrating spring to a commemoration of labor rights in the United States. The Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions wanted to end the poor working conditions and long hours workers faced and held a convention in Chicago, where they proposed an eight-hour workday. Although implemented on May 1, 1886, May Day as a labor movement never fully took root as a holiday in the United States, and was later surpassed by Labor Day, which is celebrated in September. However, May Day is still celebrated in 66 other countries.

Spring Cleaning: Is Your 'Junk' Worth A Fortune?
I
f your family is like most, you have “junk” in your basement, garage or attic, such as sports cards, memorabilia and toys. Before you toss them out during spring cleaning, consider that the prices of sports cards, games and other ephemera are skyrocketing. How can you determine if your stuff is valuable and, if it is, how can you sell it? A widely accepted rule for sports cards, memorabilia and toys is that older items are worth more. However, these days even more recent items are also commanding high prices. “Vintage sports cards from the early periods of a sport are almost always highly collectible, especially of Hall of Famers,” says Al Crisafulli, Auction Director at Love of the Game Auctions, an internet sports and memorabilia auction that helps families sell collectibles. “But don’t assume sports cards or other memorabilia have to be old to be valuable. pring cleaning is a ritual that many people participate in as the last vestiges of winter disappear. Spring cleaning is a time to open windows, deep clean rooms and closets and take down and launder window treatments and linens. Others use spring cleaning as a time to sort and donate or discard clutter that might have accumulated over the winter. Even though spring cleaning seems like a modern invention, the act of spring cleaning is believed to have originated centuries ago. Some say that the ancient Chinese cleaned in preparation for their New Year as they hoped to wipe away any bad luck and misfortune from the previous year. Similarly, the ancient Hebrew practice of thoroughly cleansing a home before the springtime feast of Passover may have evolved into the spring cleaning we know today. Another possible connection is the tradition of "shaking the house clean" in Iran. Iranians celebrate Now Rouz (Persian New Year) with many different rituals, one of which involves buying new clothes and cleaning every corner of the family home to signify renewal.

Older Sports Cards
Cards from the 1960s and earlier are collectible, and those from before the 1940s can be extremely valuable. Big-name Hall of Famers like Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Lou Gehrig, Honus Wagner, Mickey Mantle and others bring high prices. With old cards from the 1880s and early 1900s, look for tobacco and candy brands, such as Old Judge, Piedmont, Sweet Caporal or American Caramel. Really old Sports memorabilia from the 19th and early 20th Century, such as photographs, postcards, bats, gloves and balls are also collectible. By Noelle Stanuch Memorial Day will be here before we know it, which means the Hamptons will soon be in full-swing, bustling with day-trippers, vacationers and of course its residents. If you live on Long Island, you may head out there for a day at the beach, a five-star dining experience or some shopping, but it isn’t necessarily where you call home. As one of the most sought after and premier luxury real estate markets in the country, it’s no surprise there’s a show that spotlights what it’s like to sell, build and live there. If you haven’t already watched Selling the Hamptons on discovery+, it’s about time you tune in! The show follows six Hamptons-based Nest Seekers real estate agents during the top selling season in the Hamptons. I sat down with J.B. Andreassi and Michael Fulfree, two of those real estate agents who are from Long Island themselves, to learn more about the show, luxury real estate as a whole and their personal lives. J.B. Andreassi is a 31 year old Southampton, NY native. He attended St. Anthony’s High School, where he met Michael Fulfree. He later graduated from Dartmouth College and worked for the National Hockey League before taking up his family legacy and transitioning into real estate. J.B.’s upbringing has provided him with unparalleled business and personal knowledge of the Hamptons, and has helped him become a successful real estate agent. While previously working in real estate, Michael had met the CEO of Nest Seekers, who let him know of an upcoming show about real estate that would be filmed in the Hamptons. Michael learned more and found out they still needed a cast. He later introduced J.B. to the CEO as well and the two decided to be a part of the show, Million Dollar Beach House, which became a hit. Discovery+ eventually started casting for Selling the Hamptons, and being as personable and hardworking as they are, of course J.B. and Michael landed a spot on that show too. “We never thought we’d end up on TV” said Andreassi. Peggy, Mia, Bianca and Kenny are the other four agents who work for the firm and hold a significant role in the show.

s In The Hamptons Although the six individuals weren’t all friends with each other prior to filming, they have all grown very close since. While watching Selling the Hamptons, you will learn more about Nest Seekers International, the game-changing firm in the rapidly expanding global real estate marketplace, which they work for. Side note, there are 120 real estate agents at that firm in the Hamptons alone! It’s not just New Yorkers that are interested in buying in the Hamptons though. J.B. has had people interested from all over the country and Michael had two interested buyers from the U.K. recently. Additionally, J.B. added “I had someone buy from Dubai as like a total rental investment property down in East Hampton Springs. Sight unseen.” However, real estate transactions in the Hamptons don’t always come easy. “This is the big leagues,” explained Michael. “It’s so competitive.” Lavish events, networking and marketing are just some of what goes into selling real estate on the East End. “Events are really big in the Hamptons,” said J.B. “If you have a big time listing, $5 million plus, an owner is gonna expect that you are doing something that’s a little more extravagant than just the regular traditional marketing, and one of those things is throwing events.” So, does Selling the Hamptons portray life in the Hamptons well? Both the guys both had something to say. “We’re showing the beaches, the wineries, the equestrian, the boating, the restaurants that we go to all the time,” said J.B. “From a lifestyle standpoint I think we actually did a very good job representing it.” Michael jumped in adding, “Yeah I mean, I think things are a little more laid back than we probably portray.” They both agreed that the biggest misconception about the Hamptons is the stuffiness. “There are a lot of really good people out here that care about each other,” said Michael. “It’s a really special community.” Want to know more about their personal lives? This Cheerful Dessert Brings Smiles To Easter Celebrations
T
he fresh, bright flavor of lemon can bring a cheery ambiance to any occasion when it makes an appearance in delicious recipes. Lemon essence seems ripe for spring and summer entertaining, and can feature prominently in Easter desserts. Such is the case with this recipe for “Lemon Poppy Seed Pound Cake” from “The Pampered Chef® Stoneware Inspirations” by The Pampered Chef® Test Kitchens. Lemon Poppy Seed Pound Cake Yield: 16 servings 1 1⁄2 cups all-purpose flour 1 1⁄2 cups granulated sugar 2 tablespoons lemon zest 2 tablespoons poppy seeds 1 teaspoon baking powder 1⁄2 teaspoon salt 3⁄4 cup (1 1⁄2 sticks) butter, softened (do not substitute margarine) 4 ounces cream cheese, softened 4 eggs 2 tablespoons milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Powdered sugar (optional) Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 325 F. Spray Stoneware Fluted Pan (or any bundt cake pan) with nonstick cooking spray. Combine flour, granulated sugar, lemon zest, poppy seeds, baking powder, and salt in a 2-quart mixing bowl; mix well. In a 4-quart mixing bowl, beat butter and cream cheese on high speed of handheld electric mixer 1 minute. Add flour mixture; beat on low speed 1 minute or until blended (mixture will form a stiff paste). 2. In a small bowl, whisk eggs, milk and vanilla just until blended. Add egg mixture to cream cheese mixture in four additions, beating 2 minutes after each addition. (Do not undermix.) 3. Pour batter into pan. Bake 55 to 60 minutes or until a cake tester inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool cake in pan 10 minutes. Loosen cake from sides of pan; carefully invert onto a cooling rack, keeping pan over cake. Cool completely. 4. Place cake on serving platter. Celebrate Passover With Homemade Charoset
P
assover is steeped in tradition. Many of these traditions involve symbolic foods which tell the story of the Israelites and their miraculous exodus from Egyptian slavery. One such food is charoset (also spelled haroset), which symbolizes the mortar the Israelites used to build bricks when they were slaves in Egypt. Charoset is a fruit relish used on small sandwiches made from matzoh and bitter herbs. The bittersweet taste is supposed to teach the bitterness of bondage and the sweetness of freedom. Passover celebrants can make their own charoset by following this recipe, courtesy of Israel My Glory magazine. Charoset Makes 15 tablespoons 1 large apple, any variety 1⁄2 cup chopped nuts 2 tablespoons honey 1 teaspoon cinnamon Small amount of lemon juice (optional) Directions: The easiest method is to put the apples and nuts into a food processor and pulse until finely diced. Sprinkle enough lemon juice on the mixture to keep the apples from turning brown. Then mix in the other ingredients. Some people also mix in a little grape juice or wine. The recipe is very forgiving, so the measurements do not have to be exact.
The Similarities Between Passover And Easter
T
o the casual observer, Passover and Easter may not to seem to have much in common. While the two holidays are celebrated by people of different faiths, they share certain similarities. Both Passover and Easter celebrate fundamental tenets of their respective faiths. For Christians, Easter commemorates the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, a moment that has shaped the lives of faithful Christians ever since. During Passover, Jews honor a moment in history that helped free slaves from captivity and shape them into the people of Israel. In addition, historians believe that the Passion of Christ, which is the short final period of Jesus’ life, occurred during the observance of Pesach, or Passover. During this time, Jesus went to Jerusalem in response to a mandate to appear at the Temple. It also is believed that the Last Supper described in all four Gospels was likely a Passover seder. Liberation and rebirth also are at the heart of both holidays.

Passover Is A Celebration Of Freedom
P
assover is a Jewish celebration that begins this year on the evening of Friday, April 15 and ends on the evening of Saturday, April 23. Passover typically occurs around the same time as Christian Easter. According to the religious
resource My Jewish Learning, Passover is a festival of freedom that marks the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt and their freedom from slavery. The term “passover,” which is also known as “pesach,” coordinates to a key moment in religious history. According to texts, the Egyptian Pharaoh refused to liberate the children of Israel, despite requests from Moses and his brother, Aaron. The pharaoh was warned that his people and he would be punished if the pharaoh did not comply. Persistent and obstinate in his refusal, Pharaoh was subjected to 10 plagues, each of which was more devastating than the previous one. These plagues included blood, frogs, bugs, flies, pestilence, boils, hail, locusts, darkness, and finally the demise of all firstborn males. To be spared the penultimate devastation, Israelites were instructed to sacrifice a lamb for a meal
and to mark their doors with its blood. The Lord would see the blood and pass over that household, sparing the occupants’ sons. Because Passover is so symbolic, Passover seders, which take place either on the first Friday or both the first and second Friday of Passover, feature many traditions. It is customary to read the Haggadah at the seder table. Traditionally, an egg, bitter herbs, a shank bone, parsley, haroset (chopped mixed nuts, fruits and cinnamon), and lettuce are included. Celebrants can even experiment with making unleavened bread at home if necessary. If horseradish for a bitter herb is unavailable, any item that can cause tears, such as ginger or raw lemon, may be substituted. Passover is an important part of Jewish history and a holiday that is celebrated each year with vigor.

Build a Bird Feeder
Build bird feeders using natural or recycled materials to teach two earth-friendly lessons in one: the importance of reducing waste and the need to take care of local wildlife. Bird feeders can be crafted from milk cartons, tin cans, mason jars or even natural materials like pinecones. As you decorate your bird feeders, talk to your kids about how birds are not just beautiful, but also a vital part of the ecosystem and how you are offering these creatures a chance to rest and refuel.
