Six Simple Ways to Live Greener This Spring

rotecting the planet is a goal for millions of people across the globe. And that’s a good thing, as the planet is increasingly in need of help. Behaviors few people may give a second thought to can dramatically impact the planet in a negative way. For example, according to Worldwatch Institute, 100 billion plastic bags are thrown away each year, less than 1 percent find their way into recycling bins. The end result of that waste is the deaths of around 1 billion birds and mammals each year due to the ingestion of plastic. If that information elicits deep emotions, perhaps this is the year to embrace a more ecofriendly lifestyle. Recycling and reusing is a good place to start, but there are other ways to embrace green-living practices in everyday life. Plan a spring garden. Explore the possibilities of a vegetable
garden and planting some fruit trees. Growing your own food can reduce reliance on commercially imported food products. Plus, the plants and other greenery will contribute to the environment in a positive way, by providing animal habitats and filtering the air. Rely on fresh air and natural light. To cool or even warm up a home, use outdoor air rather than turning on the HVAC system the moment you feel uncomfortable. Natural sunlight coming through windows can warm up a space and illuminate it adequately. Reduce reliance on motor vehicles The organization TreeHugger says currently there are around 700 million cars on the road, producing 900 million tons of carbon dioxide each year. Bicycling or walking to the store or school, and carpooling to work can help reduce these
emissions. Use natural cleaning ingredients Vinegar, baking soda and citrus oils can be used to clean and deodorize, reducing reliance on harmful cleaning chemicals. Opt for paperless whenever possible Reduce paper waste by signing up for paperless billing and receipts. Try paying bills electronically, which will cut down on the number of paper bills and envelopes that end up in the trash.

How to Plant a Tree For Successful Growth
M
ore sunlight and warm temperatures frequently inspire homeowners to spend more time in the great outdoors during spring and summer. Why plant a tree? There are plenty of reasons to plant trees. Trees provide a natural form of shade, reducing air temperature by blocking the sun’s rays. This can reduce reliance on air conditioning systems and make it more comfortable to spend time outdoors during the summer. North Carolina State University College of Agriculture & Life Sciences says trees absorb and block noise and reduce glare. They also can trap dust, pollen and smoke. Trees also absorb carbon dioxide and potentially harmful gasses from the air. One large tree can supply a day’s worth of oxygen for as many as four people, while also storing 13 pounds of carbon per year. Getting started Visit a garden center or nursery and select a tree that will be hardy in your planting zone. Choosing native trees can www.seasonsmagazineonline.com
increases the likelihood that the new tree will adapt to its surroundings. Also, inspect
trees to determine if they’re healthy before taking them home. Look for evidence of root girdling, which occurs when the roots circle around the perimeter of the container and surround the trunk. Trees should not have any dead or dormant branches.
The DIY Network suggests locating the tree where it can thrive. This means selecting a spot that can make it easier for the tree to grow tall and wide. Avoid planting near the house, where roots can crack concrete or asphalt, and always plant away from underground pipes. Planting the tree Now it is time to amend the soil. It’s not enough to enrich only the soil in the hole where the tree will be placed. Move out into a circular area beyond where the roots will start so that roots can expand and properly anchor the tree. The next method of success is to ensure that the tree has a large enough hole to contain the existing root ball and allow for roots to grow and expand. Better Homes and Gardens experts say to prepare a hole that is two to three times as wide as the root ball of the tree. Treat the root ball gently. If the roots are wrapped in burlap, remove the burlap or push it to the bottom of the hole. Backfill the hole with soil and check that the tree is straight.

Stake the tree to help it stay upright and straight until the roots anchor it more effectively. A layer of mulch around the base of the tree can prevent weeds and reduce water loss. Water daily for several weeks until the roots have fanned out. It’s best to leave trees be for the first growing season, only removing broken or diseased limbs. Resist pruning and shaping until the tree has survived its first growing season.

How Dogs Benefit From Daily Walks

og owners with fenced-in backyards may think their furry friends are getting all they need during their nightly exercise sessions in the backyard. While such yards provide safe places for dogs to relax and run around, the American Humane Association (www.americanhumane. org) notes that even dogs who run wild in their backyards each day can benefit from daily walks. The following are a handful of ways dogs benefit from daily walks. Socialization: The Animal Humane Society (www.animalhumanesocity. org) notes that puppies between
three weeks and 20 weeks old are generally accepting of other dogs, and nightly walks can provide the perfect opportunity for puppy owners to acquaint their furry friends with their fellow dogs. Continued exposure after 20 weeks can help further the socialization process for young dogs.
Behavior: While puppies can learn to socialize on daily walks, older dogs may or may not reap the same rewards. But daily walks can help dog owners instill better behavior in their dogs. The AHS advises that owners of older dogs use walks as opportunities to teach dogs to behave calmly in public. Bring treats to reward dogs for sitting quietly when encountering other dogs and new people along the walk.
Exercise: Of course, daily walks provide great exercise for dogs. Dogs who are let out in the backyard each night but are not played with may not be getting the exercise their owners think they are. Dogs left alone in a backyard may briefly run around before plopping down in the grass and enjoying the fresh air. That’s not enough exercise

Getting Prepared For Summer Camp Season
S
ummer camp season is just around the corner. Each summer, millions of children depart for campsites around the country to swim, hike, craft, and enjoy the companionship of friends.
Summer camps in North America were first established in the 1880s and were attended by children without their parents for overnight stays. By the 20th century, summer camps had become an international phenomenon, and various organizations hosted traditional
summer camps or camps geared toward religion, sports, music and other subjects and activities. According to the American Camp Association, each year more than 14 million children and adults in the United States attend camp.
Parents should keep in mind that camps begin registration early in the year and have specific cut-off dates for enrollment. Parents can use this guide to help plan a summer camp agenda.
Attend an orientation seminar.. Take the time to visit prospective camps for a tour, and use this open house as an opportunity to learn more about the programs offered. If available, find a camp employee to discuss your child’s eligibility for enrollment. Some camps may offer webinars for convenience.

Establish payment schedules.. Summer camps vary in price. The ACA says camp costs range from $100 to more than $1,500 per week. However, many accredited camps offer some sort of financial assistance for children from families with limited financial means. If cost is a factor, be sure to broach the subject. Expect to submit some personal information, including a medical background and proof of insurance, names and numbers of emergency contacts, and any other pertinent information as it applies to the camper. This may include allergies, fears, physical or mental disabilities, or even preferences in camp
Prepare children for the physical challenges of camp. Summer camp activities may be rigorous, and campers may need to be cleared by a physician before starting. Be sure to schedule your child a physical and bring along any pertinent forms. Children also can increase their levels of physical activity compared to the often sedentary nature of winter. Shop for supplies. Camps are likely to provide a list of requirements with regard to clothing and other equipment campers will need. Make sure kids have enough shorts, T-shirts, socks, athletic shoes, swimsuits, toiletries, and other camp necessities before they leave and physical activities. Keep children in the loop. Engage children in the planning process to help alleviate their fears and get them excited about summer camp shoes, swimsuits, toiletries, and other camp necessities before they leave and physical activities.

Clean and comfortable furniture can make outdoor entertaining that much more enjoyable. After months in storage or nestled under protective tarps, outdoor furniture likely needs a good cleaning before it’s put to the test once again. Mildew may have formed, insects may be hiding out within cushions or in other crevices and dirt may have accumulated — even if the furniture was cleaned before being stored away. Experts recommend cleaning outdoor furniture between three and four times per year to keep it in optimal condition.

Automatic dishwasher detergent mixed with a gallon of warm water also may do the trick. The detergent contains a mild bleaching agent that will not cause damage like straight bleach can.
Glass Dish detergent and general home cleaning solutions work well on glass surfaces. Remember to clean all sides, including bottom-facing areas. After cleaning, use vinegar or a glass cleaning solution and a microfiber cloth to produce a streakfree shine. any Long Islanders love their horses, as is evident by the nearly fifty individual horse stables and riding centers scattered tip-to-toe, from Long Island’s east end all the way into western Nassau county. Everything from substance abuse to serious traumas have been helped through various forms of Equine therapy. According to Julie Dell’Aira, Executive Director of Great Strides Long Island, a stable and riding center located in Middle Island, “almost anyone can enjoy riding, and we have children and adults of all ages and abilities who participate from a very basic level all the way through jumping.” As a great bonding activity and a more active alternative to traditional early childhood programs, Dell’Aira even has a “Mommy & Me” riding program at Great Strides, to introduce horseback riding to moms and their children who are as young as five years old.
For Andrea Mercier, who works at her family's Knoll Farm in Brentwood, horses were in her blood from a very early age. “I started riding when I was twelve years old, when my grandmother took me to a place that let me ride a horse around a ring, and from that moment on I was hooked.” Mercier is a seasoned horse trainer and riding instructor at her family’s stable, and she’s ridden competitively for years. She credits growing up on Long Island's “Great South Bay” with developing her love of the water and boating, as well as her love of farms and, of course, horses. Mercier believes that horses and equestrian sports have a long history on Long Island because “it’s always been a rural outlet for urban dwellers,” referring to New Yorkers who visit Long Island from Manhattan and the Burroughs; and Long Islanders who wish to escape their busy, over scheduled daily lives.

In terms of physical conditioning, Innes-Ortiz further explains that “riding develops a strong core, quadriceps, adductor, glutes and calf muscles. Riding a horse for forty-five minutes at a walk, trot and cantor can burn up to two hundred calories.”
Julie Dell’Aira of Great Strides adds, “Often people are under the misconception that riding is just sitting on the horse. That is definitely not the case. Proper horseback riding will stretch and exercise your trunk, arm and leg muscles, and develop your balance. It also requires both large and small motor skills, and requires your ability to read the horse’s body language, thus developing intuitive abilities." “[Horses] teach you lessons about relationships, communication, and body language; as well as patience, trust, respect and unconditional love,” adds Andrea Mercier of Knoll Farm, referring to some of the psychological and emotional benefits. And there is more to interacting with horses than active riding. There are great benefits to being around, caring for and grooming horses, and preparing them for a ride. Mercier makes sure to note how caring for horses in the stables also offers quite a workout. “Tacking, grooming and doing barn chores can also offer great exercise.”
So who exactly is horseback riding on Long Island? It’s a wide cross-section of children as young as three years old to adults and some seniors who are riding at Thomas School of Horsemanship in Melville. Great Strides echoes that sentiment, adding that because of

their stellar reputation with equine therapy for various populations, they have a program for veterans as well as programs for people on the autism spectrum. In explaining how the horses cope with nontypical riders, Dell’Aira explains, “For the horses, is can be a bit more challenging, as they have to be able to accept less subtlety with some of our students.” But she notes that they are up to the task. “The horses are really amazing, as they always seem to understand which student needs what.”
Taking into account the intimidation factor around the mythology of horses (think "The Black Stallion" for one) as wild, unruly creatures; or the misnomer that you have to begin riding at a young age, Mercier, Innes-Ortiz and Dell-Aira insist on warm, welcoming and laid back environments where new students gain a holistic education about horses and can ease into learning about the communicative language and temperament of horses. Innes-Ortiz states, "Our program develops a physical working knowledge in the care of horses, equipment and barn management. It also develops an emotional aspect of riding. Horses have a calming effect on people."

eautifully colored Easter eggs are a beloved holiday tradition. In many cultures, eggs represent new life, fertility and rebirth. For Christians, the Easter egg is symbolic of the resurrection, or the eternal life, of Jesus Christ. The practice of coloring eggs and offering them as decorative items is embraced during both secular and religious Easter celebrations.
Begin with firm, hard-boiled eggs. Bring a pot of water to a rolling boil. Then use a large spoon to gently lower the eggs into the water. Lower the heat to maintain a simmer and boil for just about 12 minutes. Transfer the eggs to a bowl with ice cold water and let them cool. Allow the eggs to cool completely before coloring.
Lay out newspaper or an old tablecloth to soak up any spills. Spills are inevitable, so don’t let them spoil the fun. In addition, empty egg cartons make ideal drying racks, so do not discard them.
Make patterns or other designs on the eggs. Use a white crayon to draw on the egg directly. The dye will not stick to the wax. Or use string, rubber bands, tape, stickers, or other items to create your pattern. Dip the egg and then remove the materials afterward to reveal the design. Swirl a few drops of food coloring into shaving cream on a flat surface. Roll the eggs into the mixture, let dry, and then gently clean to remove the excess shaving cream. Recognize that you don’t have to “dye” eggs at all. Use a sponge to dab on a design. Strips of tissue paper can be adhered to the egg with glue or shellac. How to Spend More Time Outdoors
G
etting outside to enjoy the great outdoors can reduce the likelihood that a person will live a sedentary lifestyle that can negatively affect long-term health. But many adults are spending too much time indoors.
In its 2014 OUT is IN national survey, the National Recreation and Park Association found that 28 percent of adults in the United States do not spend time outside daily. The survey, conducted by Ipsos Public Affairs on behalf of the NPRA, asked 1,005 adults to share their opinions and behaviors regarding outdoor time. While 35 percent of respondents said work was getting in the way of their spending time outdoors, 39 percent said their computers, tablets, smartphones, and televisions were keeping them indoors.
Though it might be difficult to cut back on hours at the office, adults do have the capacity to cut back on their screen time. Using that newfound free time to get outdoors can pay dividends for years to come, as the National Center on Health, Physical Activity and Disability notes
that the potential consequences of living a sedentary lifestyle are severe. According to the NCHPAD, one study indicated a 40 percent decrease in cancer mortality among physically active persons compared to those who were inactive. Physical
activity also helps to prevent insulin resistance, which is the underlying cause of type 2 diabetes. While you don’t need to get outdoors to be physically active, men and women who find
themselves bored by workouts at the gym or at home may be more likely to embrace physical activity if they can get their exercise outdoors. The following are three great ways to spend more time enjoying all that nature has to offer. Take up hiking. While some hiking trails are best left to seasoned hikers, many are built for hikers of all ages and abilities. Men and women who are overweight should not be intimidated by hiking, as even the simplest trails can help them get back on a healthy track. Men and women who incorporate hiking into their regular routines can lower their risk of heart disease and improve their blood pressure and blood sugar levels. The American Hiking Society also notes that research has shown that hiking can positively affect mood by helping to combat the symptoms of stress and anxiety.

Whip Up Delicious Ice Cream in the Comfort of Home
Ice cream is a favorite dessert across the globe. The average American consumes more than 23 pounds of ice cream per year, says the International Dairy Foods Association.
Even though a trip to the local ice cream parlor can yield many different opportunities to indulge, making ice cream at home is easier than one may believe. Creating homemade ice cream can be a fun way to experiment with unique flavors and textures. It's easy to customize concoctions based on what everyone likes best. Making ice cream also is a fun and sweet way to bring the family together.
• Buy quality ingredients
• Choose fresh, high-quality ingredients. Real vanilla beans or extract can produce better flavor than imitations. Select in-season berries and other fruits and, if possible, use organic milk. All of these ingredients will blend together for fresh flavor
Freeze equipment early
• Cold equipment is necessary to produce ice cream. Store the bowls of an ice cream maker in the freezer to keep them frozen and ready for when the mood strikes to make a batch of ice cream
Avoid ice crystallization
• According to Food 52, a foodie equipment and recipe resource, ice crystals in the ice cream can ruin texture by making ice cream crunchy.
