Last - Minute Holiday Shopping Tips
S
ome people thrive by doing all of their tasks early. Others seem to do their best work when faced with a time crunch. The methods individuals use to manage their time at work and play may extend to the ways they approach holiday shopping as well.
registers or door to attract shoppers. Set an alarm on your watch or phone for each store so you get what you need and get out on time. • Subdivide bulk gifts. Think about purchasing bulk gifts like gift baskets from wholesale clubs and then breaking them down into individual gifts. This way you can gift several people on one purchase and save time in the process.
There’s no right or wrong way to handle holiday shopping tasks, though Christmas Eve shoppers at malls and throughout shopping districts suggest that there’s more late comers than there are early birds. The following tips can help those who typically wait until the last minute to check names off their lists.
• Choose one-size-fits-all gifts. Think about a gift that can be purchased for multiple people so you can save time shopping for individualized gifts for everyone. For example, print a personalized photo calendar for several members of your family. You also can purchase multiple subscriptions or memberships to zoos or magazines for people on your list. Streamlining gifting in this way may save money as well as time.
• Utilize free shipping services. Shoppers who shop for gifts online at the last minute run the risk of gifts not arriving on time. Many online retailers charge a premium for expedited shipping. Try to stick to shopping at online retailers that offer free shipping even in the eleventh hour. • Create a budget. When rushing around from store to store, it may be easy to spend more than you want to. Make a list of how much you want to spend on each person, and stick to that limit for each person. Move on to the next store if you didn’t find what you need in your price range.
• Establish a time limit. Stores have strategies in place to keep shoppers in their establishments longer, hoping you’ll make impulse buys. These tricks include scenting the air with inviting aromas, putting necessities at the rear of the store, failing to display the time, and putting discounted items by the
• Choose in-store pickup. Rather than scouring various aisles, you can shop a retailer’s website and then pick up items in the store. You’ll save on potential shipping fees but still benefit by avoiding crowds. A few tricks of the procrastinator’s trade can make last-minute shopping go smoothly.
Decorative Holiday Symbols Add To Celebrations
D
ecorating homes and other spaces is a major component of the holiday season. Holiday decorations often reflect celebrants’ religious beliefs, and the following are some traditional holiday decor symbols for people of various faiths. Christmas Tree Christian or secular Christmas symbol Few things evoke thoughts of Christmastime quite like a towering evergreen parked front and center in a home’s picture window. Christmas trees are believed to date back to sixteenth century Germany. The custom ultimately arrived in America when the country welcomed an influx of German immigrants. It is widely believed that various non-Christian cultures may have used evergreen plants indoors in celebration of the winter solstice, which suggests Christmas
trees may pre-date Christian symbolism. Menorah Jewish Chanukah symbol Menorahs are seven-armed candelabras used in Jewish religious worship. To mark the Chanukah celebration, a special nine-armed hanukkiah is displayed for eight days and nights. A candle is lit each day to commemorate the miracle of oil lasting in the rededicated Temple after the Maccabees’ successful uprising against the Syrian Greeks. The menorah typically is placed in a highly visible spot, such as the front window of a home or in a high-traffic living space.
and draws attention to the weeks preceding Christmas. A new candle is lit on the wreath each Sunday to prepare the faithful to receive the Lord Jesus. Kinara and Mishumaa Saba Kwanzaa cultural symbol The Kinara (candle holder) and the Mishumaa Samba (the seven candles) are symbolic of Kwanzaa. The candles and holder represent the Seven Principles, or the minimum set of values by which African people are urged to live. Baby New Year Secular symbol
Baby New Year is a popular promotional symbol used to Advent Wreath commemorate the dawn of a Roman Catholic, Anglican new year. The baby represents and Lutheran, among others, rebirth and may be traced Christian symbol back to the ancient Greeks or The Advent wreath is used by Egyptians. Historians say the various Christian denominations Greeks believed that their god

of wine, Dionysus, was reborn on New Year’s Day as the spirit of fertility. While people may not decorate with Baby New Year figurines, they do participate in “First Baby” competitions, which celebrate those infants born in the opening moments of a new year. Nativity Scene Christian Christmas symbol It’s customary for nativity scenes to be included in Christmas decor schemes. The nativity depicts the birth of Christ and typically includes a manger, Mary, Joseph, shepherds, various animals, an angel, and the three visiting Magi. The infant Jesus also is included, though some people prefer to wait until the after the stroke of midnight on Christmas Eve to place Jesus in the manger. Live nativity scenes also are commonplace around Christmas. Saint Francis of Assisi is credited with creating the first live nativity scene in 1223.

Make Chanukah Special With These Traditions
F
or eight nights each winter, candles burn in commemoration of a miraculous and joyous event. Chanukah, often referred to as the Festival of Lights, commemorates an ancient miracle that occurred after the Jewish people waged a hardfought battle against religious oppression. A small contingent of Jewish warriors led by Judah Maccabee rebelled against Syrian Greek rulers who desecrated the holy Second Temple in Jerusalem and tortured and persecuted those who did not adopt their religious beliefs. After the Maccabees came out victorious, they set out to rededicate the Temple, which included lighting a menorah. They could only find enough oil for the candelabra to burn for one night. Miraculously, the oil burned for eight nights and the Temple was kept holy. This miracle is the inspiration for Chanukah.
would quickly hide their books and take out spinning tops to pretend to be playing with them when the Greeks were watching. In commemoration, these little tops, or dreidels, are taken out on Chanukah. The dreidels are marked with four Hebrew letters, which represent the phrase “nes gadol haya sham,” or “a great miracle happened there.”
Eating fried foods Frying foods in olive oil has become tradition and a way to acknowledge the miraculous Temple oil burning. However, in commemoration of the Chanukah miracle, a special menorah, called a hanukkiah, is used. This menorah is a ninebranched version that enables a candle to be lit for each day the rededicated Temple candles burned. The middle, highest candle from which the others are lit is called she shamash. The hanukkiah is traditionally placed in a visible space, such as the front window of celebrants’ homes.

adults, many Jewish families make “tzedakah” (donations) to nonprofits and other charitable organizations during Chanukah. The sixth night of Chanukah has recently become associated with charitable giving and other gifting.
Family time In addition to these traditions, Chanukah is an ideal opportunity for Jewish family members to gather under one roof. It also may be an opportunity for them to share their celebrations and religious customs with non-Jewish friends. Chanukah is a celebratory time that looks back to a significant Playing with the dreidel Jews were forbidden from miracle in Jewish history. History Of The Dreidel
D
reidels are especially popular during the eightday Jewish festival of Chanukah. Even though they may seem like novelty items for children, dreidels have a rich and interesting history. In ancient times, Greek Syrians infiltrated areas where many practicing Jews resided. Over time, the Greek Syrians became more oppressive and tried to convert the Jewish people to their pagan beliefs. However, their efforts were not very successful. As a result, the Greek Syrians established laws that outlawed ritual commandments and the study of the Torah. It is widely believed that Jewish people used dreidels to fool the Greeks into thinking they were just playing a game. Instead, rolls of the dreidel corresponded to numerical equivalents that could represent elements of the Jewish faith, according to My Jewish Learning. Others say the dreidel was a distraction. Children of Israel would learn the Torah in outlying areas and forests. When Greek patrols were nearby, the children would hide their texts and take out dreidels instead, says Chabad.org. Today the dreidel is a token of the Chanukah miracle. In Israel, the letters upon the dreidel are Nun, Gimel, Hay, and Pay, which stand for the Hebrew equivalent of “a great miracle happened here.” Outside of israel, the last letter is Shin, which transforms the phrase into “a great miracle happened there.”
M
The Meaning Of The Menorah
enorahs are a prominent symbol of Chanukah. Menorahs are seven-branched candelabras that have been used in Jewish worship since ancient times. The seven branches refer to the seven days of creation. The menorah is the traditional symbol of Judaism and the emblem of the state of Israel. For Chanukah, a nine-branched candelabra called a hanukkiah is used, but the word “menorah” has become interchangeable. The Chanukah menorah consists of nine candles. The center and ninth candle are referred to as the Shamash. It is used to light all the other candles. The Shamash is raised above the other candles to make it kosher. The lighting of the menorah over the eight days of Chanukah symbolizes the miracle that occurred during the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean revolt. The sacred oil, of which there was only enough for one day’s lighting, miraculously lasted for eight days.

This Italian Cheesecake Makes A Great Holiday Dessert
A
fter a delicious holiday meal, there’s a good chance guests will be looking forward to a sweet treat. Many families have their go-to desserts on special occasions, but holiday meals can be made even more memorable, and flavorful, by taking a chance on new recipes.
A decadent cheesecake is on the menu in many Italian American families, who may dive in after enjoying a bowl of fruit, fennel and chestnuts. Italian cheesecake does not typically contain the cream cheese or graham cracker crust found in many commercial cheesecakes. Rather, Italian cheesecakes are full of citrus flavor and made with modified pie crust. Dig into this recipe for “Torta Dolce di Ricotta” from Daniel Paterna’s “Feast of the Seven Fishes: A Brooklyn Italian’s Recipes Celebrating Food & Family” (Powerhouse Books). Directions: To make the crust, place the flour, sugar, and zest on a pastry board or clean, dry, flat surface. Mix thoroughly to combine. Add the butter and work it into the dry ingredients. Gather the mixture into a round and create a well in the center. Drop eggs into the well, beat with a fork while gathering the dry mixture, then knead once the dough completely forms. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Butter and flour a 10-inch springform baking pan. Set aside.
Torta Dolce di Ricotta Serves 10 to 12
Crust: 2 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra to dust board and pan 3⁄4 cup sugar Zest of one lemon 1⁄2 cup unsalted butter, softened, plus extra to grease the pan 2 large eggs
Filling: 8 large eggs 3 pounds ricotta cheese, drained of excess water 2 teaspoons vanilla 1 1⁄2 cups sugar Zest of 2 oranges Juice of 1 orange Juice of 1 lemon 1⁄4 cup candied pear, chopped (optional)
www.longislandmediagroup.com/seasons-magazine
Meanwhile, to prepare the filling, combine the eggs, ricotta cheese, vanilla, sugar, orange zest, orange juice, lemon juice, and candied pear (if using) in a large mixing bowl. Mix thoroughly and set aside. After the 30 minutes, remove the dough from the refrigerator and place it on a large board or clean, dry, flat surface, lightly dusted with flour. Using a floured rolling pin, roll the dough out into a large circle, approximately 14 inches in diameter. Now roll the dough over the rolling pin and carefully unwind it over the baking pan, gently easing it to fit evenly in the bottom and up the sides of the pan. Pour or spoon the filling mixture into the crust, leaving about 1⁄4 inch below the rim of the pan. Place the pan in a preheated oven and bake for 1 hour and 45 minutes, until the center is slightly firm. Cool for at least 2 hours. Author’s note: I have left it unrefrigerated overnight when I have baked it the night before to save time. Carefully run a plastic knife or rigid spatula around the sides of the pan to remove it, so that no crust is pulled away when you release the spring of the pan. Serve at room temperature.

Make-Ahead Meals
For Tasty Holiday Dinners
I
ndividuals may be presented with plenty of opportunities to cook for a crowd over the course of a typical year, but no time of year is more synonymous with large sit-down meals than the holiday season. Certain foods, such as pasta dishes and casseroles, are ideal dishes to cook for crowds. However, for those home cooks who want to prepare in advance and then enjoy themselves on the actual holiday, it may be best to choose foods that taste better the day after the dish has been cooked. Many recipes develop deeper flavor profiles after they have been left to rest and are then reheated. Holiday hosts can explore these ideas for meals that can be cooked in advance and taste even better when reheated after a day in the refrigerator.
Stew
A stew that’s been simmering on the stove or in the slow cooker all day will have a winning flavor. Stew can be even more delicious the next day. The starch in the potatoes will enable the sauce of the stew — whether it’s tomato-based or comprised of a mix of brown gravy and meat drippings — to thicken. The meat may continue to cook and tenderize while reheating. As a one-pot meal, stew is simple to prepare in advance and then serve in an attractive crock for the holidays.
loaf continue to release their flavors, and letting the loaf sit can improve the texture and the ability to slice it without it falling apart. Consider pan-frying individual slices of meatloaf until they’re browned so they’ll be crisp on the outside and tender in the middle.
Lasagna
Lasagna is a layered pasta dish featuring flat noodle sheets, cheese, sauce, and sometimes meat like ground beef or sausage. Lasagnas that are served right out of the oven can be runny even if they taste scrumptious. Baking it and letting it sit overnight allows all of the layers to gel together, making for a much more cohesive and fortified dish the following day.
Curries
Curries are typically made with many spices that help to make the dish flavorful. A curry that is freshly made may feature intense flavor because each of its components can be tasted individually. After a night of resting in the refrigerator, those flavors meld and mellow. Furthermore, if potatoes are used in the recipe, a night in the fridge gives the potatoes an opportunity to absorb the spices, making for an even tastier meal.
Many meals can be made ahead of time for holiday dinners and will taste even better when they are served the following Meatloaf The herbs and spices in a meat day.

Picking The Perfect Fresh Christmas Tree

Choose your species Do some homework on the type of tree you want prior to buying the tree. Balsam fir and fraser fir are popular Christmas tree varieties, but there are many others, such as noble fir and Norway spruce. Space for ornaments In addition to aroma and needle longevity, look for trees that have a desirable shape and allow for adequate space between branches, advises the home and garden resource The Spruce. Trees groomed to be lush and full will look beautiful unadorned, but once ornaments are added, full branches may cause those ornaments to hang low or even fall off. Trees with sparse branches
