"Winter is a season of recovery and preparation." ~ Paul Theroux
Growing up on Long Island, I can recall the cold winters when I would long for and daydream about the first bloom of spring. I would relish the vacation my family and I would take each year during winter break to enjoy someplace warm and sunny on the beach.
Though I am still not a fan of temperatures that drop below 40 degrees, as I have matured, I have come to appreciate each of the four seasons that we are blessed to experience here on Long Island. When you lean into moments, you can make them beautiful and memorable. Activities like sledding or snowboarding with my son, sitting by a warm crackling fire with a blanket and a good book, whipping up heartier meals, making snow angels and sipping a mug of hot coca are just some of the cherished moments I now look forward to during the winter months. February is the month of fluffy pajamas and socks, warm mittens and scarfs, and taking in the splendor of a Winter Wonderland on our beautiful and magical island. This month, I will be throwing caution to the wind and going ice skating for the first time in years. Wish me luck!

Protect Your Home From Winter's Freeze
F
reezing temperatures may be good for ice skating or building snowmen, but sub-freezing temperatures can be dangerous for the average person and his or her home.
Cold weather often leaves people scurrying to do whatever is necessary to safeguard themselves from the big chill. But it’s important
that homeowners also protect their homes in cold weather: Plumbing and pipes may be vulnerable to cold weather. Frozen pipes can burst and cause substantial damage to a home, potentially causing flooding and structural damage. Homeowners should disconnect and drain garden hoses. Water to outdoor hose bibs should be turned
off, though the valves on these outdoor faucets should be left open to drain. Also, outdoor faucets can be covered with insulating foam covers.
The Red Cross says pipes that freeze most frequently include pipes in unheated areas, such as basements, attics, garages, and crawl spaces. Close vents to the outside in areas like attics and basements to limit the amount of cold air that gets indoors. Think about insulating unheated areas, as well as using pipe sleeves, heat tape or wraps on exposed pipes. By opening kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors, homeowners can allow warm air from a home to reach pipes under the sink. During extreme freezes, keep cold water dripping from a sink to prevent pipes from freezing
hot water heaters. Inspect the heat exchanger for cracks, install a clean air filter and make sure all thermostats are working properly. Homeowners who heat their homes with oil, wood or coal should make sure they have plenty of fuel on hand. Shortages can occur, and it may take some time for new fuel to arrive in the midst of a cold snap.
As a precaution, homeowners can rely on portable space heaters to fill in the heating gaps during the most freezing temperatures. Exercise extreme caution with these devices, by purchasing a portable heater that safeguards against overheating. Also be sure to read the enclosed directions, turn off the heater when leaving the room and remembering to avoid overloading outlets.
It’s important to ensure that heating systems are working properly. It may only take hours for the interior of a home to reach dangerously low temperatures without adequate heat. Homeowners should schedule annual checkups of furnaces and

Sledding has been part of snowy celebrations for ages. Sledding is a fun-filled activity, but it can be made an even better time, and a little safer, if revelers learn a little more about it. Sled styles: Sleds come in many different styles, each with its own advantages. Sleds with metal blades will work like ice skates, balancing riders’ weight on two metal runners. These sleds can work well during icy conditions or with hard-packed snow. Toboggans can fit multiple people, which can increase the fun factor and downhill speeds. Saucer-style sleds are good for one or two people. Foam liners on some saucers can absorb shock for riders, making those downhill bumps a little easier on the backside. Keep in mind that sleds with steering mechanisms are easier to control, which can equate to safer sledding. Layer up: It is best to dress in layers when going sledding Even if it seems warm at home, it may be colder and windier at the top of hills. Sweating when it’s cold out can increase a person’s risk for hypothermia. According to experts at Timberline Trails, a person who works up a sweat and comes in contact with ambient air when taking a break will feel an immediate chill. This is called evaporative

danger, and can be remedied by dressing in layers and trying to stay dry.
Invest in a helmet: Sledding requires the use of a helmet. At high speeds, a blow to the head can cause a concussion or worse. Let others go first: Wait until some sledders have already gone downhill, allowing them to compact the snow, which should make for a smooth ride.
Choose safe hills, such as those that are free of bare spots, holes, trees, and obstructions, and do not end abruptly at a road. Hills with a long, flat areas at the end make for easy, safe stopping. Safety first: Put safety first when sledding. Sled during the daytime so visibility is better. Keep arms and legs on the sled, and only sled feetfirst, advises the National Safety Council.
By keeping these guidelines in mind, sledders can make sure this popular winter activity is as safe as it is fun.

Stay Safe and Warm During Winter Workouts
A
thletes devoted to outdoor workouts do not abandon their routines when winter rears its chilly head. While it can be difficult to embrace the great outdoors when temperatures hover around freezing, maintaining your motivation bodes well for your fitness goals the rest of the year. Staying warm is a top priority for athletes who exercise outdoors during winter months. While there’s no guarantee winter winds won’t test your willpower, there are ways to stay warm when working out in colder climates.
For years, many people subscribed to the conventional wisdom that suggested people lose 40 to 45 percent of their body heat through their heads. But in 2008, researchers at Indiana University debunked that myth, suggesting that if humans lost that much heat through their heads, they would be just as cold when going outside without a hat on as they would be if they left home without wearing any pants. But wearing headgear when exercising outdoors is still a good idea, as the head is more sensitive to changes
www.seasonsmagazineonline.com
in temperature than many other areas of the body. A wool hat you can pull down over your ears can protect them from getting too cold. Athletes may also want to consider ski masks or other facial covers that can protect their faces.
Layering has long been a reliable way to beat the cold when temperatures are at their lowest. But layering must be done correctly to be effective. When choosing your workout gear, choose an inner layer that will move moisture away from your skin. Cotton retains moisture, and that means your sweat will cling to your body and make you feel cold. Once you find a shirt made with moisture-wicking material to wear against your skin, look for a second layer that also wicks moisture so you can more effectively control your body temperature. Your outer layer should be capable of handling the elements, so look for something that is waterproof and wind-resistant.
choosing workout socks, avoid cotton socks that don’t wick moisture away from your feet. Acrylic can be more effective at wicking moisture away from your feet than cotton.
Know your weather reports. While it’s admirable to stay on course with your outdoor workouts in the winter, don’t allow your devotion to overtake your common sense.
Check the forecast before beginning an outdoor exercise, paying particular attention to the wind chill. According to the Mayo Clinic, frostbite can occur when skin is exposed to wind chill levels below minus 18 F for 30 minutes. If need be, shorten outdoor workout routines and find ways to exercise indoors when wind chills get dangerously low.
Feet can easily succumb to cold temperatures when exercising outdoors, but you can employ the same strategy with your socks that you do with your layers. When

Make Managing Winter More Fashionable
N
avigating snowy landscapes and icy streets can be difficult and uncomfortable. Winter clothing is largely classified by clothes that keep you warm, and some that keep you even warmer, but winter need not be strictly about function. Although winter might not be the season of high fashion, anyone can employ strategies to include form, function and fashion into their winter ensembles.
to have a selection of matching gloves, scarves and hats to finish off the look.
Consider different types of outerwear for different days. For example, a ski-inspired short coat or even a navy-style pea coat is ideal for casual days. When the temperature hasn’t dipped too low, wear a wool poncho over a turtleneck or sweater to add movement and style. Always have a longer-length, belted coat available for formal events. And don’t forget
Designers recognize that winter footwear should be functional, but it also needs to look good. A quality pair of waterproof snow boots is a must when shoveling out the car or driveway, but your winter footwear should not stop there. Boots and booties come in all designs, and many are being fashioned with furlined (or opt for faux fur!) insoles and waterproof coverings to withstand
Sturdy outerwear is a necessity in winter. Invest in a quality coat that not only keeps you warm, but looks good, too. Opt for a burst of color rather than choosing a coat in a neutral shade. Detailing on the outerwear, such as buckles, belts and buttons, can add to the appeal.”
Staying warm is a goal each winter, but that doesn’t mean you have to banish skirts and dresses to the back of your closet. Choose materials that will keep you toasty, including wool, synthetic blends and thick, cotton corduroys. Pair skirts with opaque tights to keep legs warm, and choose stylish calf- or knee-high boots, which are trending right now. Patchwork trends can be seen all over the fall and winter runway shows, and you can experiment with this trend on dresses or skirts to bring a bohemian touch to your winter ensembles.
winter weather without sacrificing style. A big trend is boots with folddown tongues and side panels that show a hint of sweater-like material or fur.
boots on the way to work and change into more appropriate shoes later on.
If you have a pair of suede boots or shoes that you love, experiment with waterproofing sprays and waxes to see if you can make them more durable this winter. Commuters may want to invest in an additional carry tote so they can wear functional
Dreaded hat hair is a major downside to winter weather. Make sure hair is completely dry before donning a hat. Use anti-frizz serum to tame fly aways that occur when hats are removed. Choose a wellfitting hat. People with long hair can pull their hair back into a high bun before putting on a hat. This will prevent hair from flattening.

Post-Winter Garden Preparation
Improve Indoor Air Quality in Winter
H
outside.
omes tend to be stuffier in autumn and winter. As temperatures outside dip, windows are closed and air quality inside homes can suffer.
Poor indoor air quality can not only be uncomfortable, causing residents to experience headaches, dry eyes and nasal congestion, but also can be unhealthy. According to the American Lung Association, poor indoor air quality can cause or contribute to the development of infections, lung cancer and chronic lung diseases, such as asthma.
L
awns and gardens can bear the brunt of winter weather and are often in need of tender loving care by the time spring arrives. Preparing a garden for spring and summer involves assessing any damage that harsh weather might have caused. As temperatures climb, gardeners can heed the following post-winter garden preparation tips in an effort to ensure some successful gardening in the months ahead.
Assess the damage. Even if winter was mild, gardens might still have suffered some damage. Inspect garden beds and any fencing or barriers designed to keep wildlife from getting into the garden. Before planting anew, fix any damage that Mother Nature or local wildlife might have caused over the past several months. Clear debris. Garden beds and surrounding landscapes that survived winter without being damaged might still be littered with debris. Remove fallen leaves, branches and even litter that blew about on windy winter days before planting season. Make sure to discard any debris effectively so it does not find its way back into the garden.
Turn the greenhouse into a clean house. Spring cleaning is not just for the interior of a home. Cleaning a greenhouse in advance of spring can help gardeners evict any overwintering pests that can threaten plant life once spring gardening season arrives. A thorough cleaning, which should www.seasonsmagazineonline.com
include cleaning the inside of greenhouse glass and washing flower pots and plant trays, also can prevent plant diseases from surviving into spring.
Check for pests. Speak with a local gardening professional to determine if there are any local pests to look out for and how to recognize and remove these pets from gardens. Pests may hibernate in the soil over the winter, and such unwelcome visitors can make it difficult for gardens to thrive come spring and summer. Assess plant location. If plants, flowers or gardens have struggled in recent years or never grew especially vibrant, then gardeners may want to assess the location of their plant life before spring gardening season begins. Some plants may not be getting enough sunlight in certain locations on a property, while others might be overexposed to the sun during spring and summer. Moving plants that are not thriving prior to the start of spring gardening season may be just what gardens need to flourish in the coming weeks.
Though it’s not feasible or healthy to open windows when temperatures outside dip to near or below freezing, there are steps everyone can take to improve the indoor air quality in their homes. Add to your décor with plants. Plants provide both aesthetic and practical appeal to a home’s interior. Houseplants can clean and purify the air in a home, helping to remove formaldehyde, benzene and other toxins that can make indoor air unhealthy to breathe.
Watch what you are lighting up. Many homeowners know that smoking indoors drastically reduces indoor air quality, putting even nonsmokers at heightened risk of developing various respiratory ailments. Homeowners concerned about the indoor air quality in their homes should ban smoking inside, no matter how low temperatures dip
Purchase an air purifier. Air purifiers are beneficial year-round, helping to remove allergens and particles from a home. High-efficiency particulate air filters, known as HEPA filters, are extremely effective at removing airborne particulates from the air inside your home. Pay attention to pets. Like their owners, pets tend to spend more time indoors during the winter. That means more fur and pet dander, the skin flakes in an animal’s fur or hair that can trigger allergic reactions, is likely in your home during the winter than in the summer. To combat this, bathe your pets regularly in the winter, making sure to wash the animal’s bedding in hot water on a weekly basis as well.
Open windows when possible. Winter does not typically provide many opportunities to open the windows, but you might get a few chances to let some fresh air in through the windows during winter. Make the most of these opportunities, and when possible crack the windows when you’re cleaning so dust and other particles that kick up have a path outside of your home. Did You Know?
Plants can improve indoor air quality by helping to remove harmful irritants from the air.
Spring gardening season is right around the corner, so now is an ideal time to prepare gardens for the warmer seasons ahead. Did You Know?
Spring cleaning is a ritual that many people participate in as the last vestiges of winter disappear. Spring cleaning is a time to open windows, deep clean rooms and closets. EDITION TEN

An Environmentally Recognize the signs of Friendly St. Patrick's Day Hypothermia
G
reen is the color most associated with St. Patrick’s Day, and green also can be the primary mindset of hosts and hostesses when planning Paddy’s Day revelry. As celebrants prepare to pay homage to Irish culture and the accomplishments of St. Patrick, they can include eco-conscious practices in the festivities.
For many people, St. Patrick’s Day is a day to let loose and have a good time. Parades are abundant, and food and drink often are enjoyed in copious amounts. While this excess can make for a fun and raucous day, those who are conscious of their carbon footprints can scale back in some clever ways.
Enjoy a Local Brew. While many may prefer a pint of Ireland-brewed Guinness on St. Patrick’s Day, imported beers have larger carbon footprints than local beers thanks to trans-Atlantic shipping and delivery to nearby retailers. Instead of Guinness, consider a locallybrewed beer. Homespun breweries are a growing niche business in communities big and small. If you’re more adventurous, invest in a homebrewing kit and try your luck with your own flavor profile.
Skip the confetti or ticker tape. Attending a parade can be the pinnacle of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. When so many people gather in one place, there’s a greater propensity for waste and litter. Although garbage cannot be avoided, towns and cities can help curtail the mess by avoiding confetti, balloon drops and ticker tape. Birds routinely get snagged by balloon strings, or they may inadvertently
www.seasonsmagazineonline.com
swallow popped latex balloons thinking they’re food. Confetti can wash away into storm drains or clog sewers. Bubbles, laser lights and other plastic- or paper-free items can be used instead and are better for the environment.
Invest in reusable products. If your’s is the go-to house for St. Patrick’s Day revelry, purchase tablecloths, dishes and cups that can be used again and again. This cuts down on the number of disposable items that get put in the trash and eventually find their way into landfills.
Transform your leftovers. Irish soda bread, corned beef, potatoes and much more are par for the culinary course come St. Patrick’s Day. Rather than discarding leftovers, consider recipes that will put those leftovers to good use. Dice up the corned beef to add to egg dishes or quiches. Post-Paddy’s Day sandwiches also make a delicious treat. Potatoes can be mashed and transformed into croquettes. Or they can be diced to make hash browns to go with those corned beefenhanced eggs. Spread soda bread with a sweet jam and instantly turn it into a dessert. Or crumble the bread to use in a delicious bread pudding. Splurge on an experience. Rather than material goods, if you want to set your party apart, invest in an experience that produces no waste. Contract with Uilleann pipers who can add a Celtic flair to the festivities. Although bagpipes are more widely associated with the Scottish, they have become synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day as well.
T
he arrival of cold weather provides opportunities to romp in the snow, ski the slopes or enjoy an afternoon of ice skating. But spending time outdoors in the cold or even in an indoor space that is not adequately heated can result in a serious health condition known as hypothermia. Hypothermia is defined as a potentially dangerous decrease in body temperature that is usually caused by prolonged exposure to cold conditions. Outdoors enthusiasts’ risk for hypothermia increases as winter progresses and temperatures drop even further. However, hypothermia can occur other times of the year if the body is chilled. For example, hypothermia can occur when boats capsize and boaters are suddenly tossed into a body of water, or when hikers get caught in the rain during evening hikes. WebMD says normal body temperature is 98.6 F (37 C), and hypothermia begins when body temperature falls below 95 F (35 C).
Hypothermia frequently develops when people are exposed to the cold without warm and dry clothing for protection. Hypothermia also

Infants and the elderly may be at a higher risk of hypothermia because their bodies aren’t attuned to regulating temperature. Older adults may suffer hypothermia, for example, after spending several hours in a house with no heat during a power outage. The Mayo Clinic adds that certain medical conditions affect the body’s ability to regulate body temperature, and certain medications may elevate risk as well. To prevent hypothermia, health experts advise remembering the acronym COLD: Cover, Overexertion, Layers, Dry.
Cover: Wear protective coverings, including mittens and hats. Overexertion: Avoid activities that cause sweating.
When the body reaches lower temperatures, this can affect the heart, nervous system and certain organs, advises The Mayo Clinic. If left untreated, hypothermia may lead to cardiac and respiratory arrest. Early symptoms of hypothermia include shivering, fast breathing, cold and pale skin, tiredness, confusion, and slurred speech. As body temperatures drop, shivering may stop and a person may faint.
may develop when people get wet or are caught unaware of changes in weather. Wind removes body heat effectively, and direct contact with cold surfaces also can bring on hypothermia more quickly.
Layers: Loose-fitting, layered clothing can offer protection from the cold and wind. Wool, silk or polypropylene insulate more effectively than cotton.
Dry: Remaining as dry as possible is essential. Children and the elderly may need to wear an extra layer or two than healthy adults would wear in the same conditions.
Taking precautions to stay warm and dry, and knowing the signs of a drop in body temperature, can help individuals stay safe

Enjoy More Stree-Free Time with the Kids
V
acations are short, and parents need to make the most of this quality time with their kids. Thankfully, the following tips and tricks can help parents cut down on their stress so they can enjoy more quality time together as a family.
Create a schedule. Jot down family activities and commitments on a large calendar and keep it on the fridge so everyone can see what’s coming up. This will help give the kids a sense of security and routine that’s missing during extended vacations, such as summer or winter breaks from school. Just be flexible, and make sure to schedule plenty of free time to relax and have quiet time with a book: Cut down on kitchen time. Don’t like having to choose between healthy and quick, easy meals? Look for simple, nutritious meal options that take much of the work out of cooking. For easy lunches and dinners you’ll feel good about serving the kids, try Mann’s Nourish Bowls. Ready in just a couple of minutes in your microwave, the meals were developed by chefs and feature superfood veggies like broccoli, sweet potato and kale. They also work as great side dishes to complete a fast and healthy meal. Plan special dates. Getting out of the house regularly doesn’t mean having to use up the family travel budget. Give the kids an
excuse to use up their energy and get some fresh air by scheduling some fun and free activities. Try going to your local skating rink or spending some time in the public library. Keep the kids on top of chores and other duties by presenting these activities as rewards for a job well done.
Did you know? Though certain elements of modern-day Valentine’s Day celebrations can be traced back to the 14th century, chocolate is not one of them.

Whip Up Something Sweet For Your
Sweetheart
Certain times of year give everyone license to indulge in sweets. No day of the year is more sweets-friendly than Valentine’s Day!
Heart-shaped boxes of chocolate are ubiquitous come mid-February. While no chocolate devotee is liable to scoff at a box of delicious chocolates, lovers who want to hit a home run with their sweets-loving sweetheart can try their hand at crafting their own confectionary concoction this Valentine’s Day. This recipe for “Chocolate Cardamom Truffle Cake” from Maxine Clark’s “Chocolate” (Ryland, Peters & Small) will amaze that special someone. This recipe serves 10-12.
• Amaretti Base
• 5 ounces amaretti • 1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter • 5 tablespoons sugar
Cardamom Truffle Filling
• 2 1/3 cups heavy cream • 4 to 6 green cardamom pods, lightly bruised to open them 25 ounces dark chocolate (60-70% cocoa solids), grated • 1⁄2 stick (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter, cubed
Cardamom Cocoa Sugar
• 3 green cardamom pods • 1/4 cup sugar 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa • 1 10-inch cake pan with a removable base, base and sides lined with nonstick parchment paper
DIRECTIONS
To make the amaretti base, finely crush the amaretti in a food processor or put them in a plastic bag and crush with a rolling pin. Melt the butter and sugar in a pan over low heat, then stir in the amaretti crumbs. Press the mixture evenly over the base of the prepared cake pan and refrigerate for 20 minutes.
To make the cardamom truffle filling, put the cream and cardamom pods in a pan and heat until almost boiling. Remove from the heat and set aside to infuse for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, put the chocolate and butter in a saucepan. Strain the infused cream through a fine strainer onto the chocolate (the cream will be warm enough to melt the chocolate). If it doesn’t melt, warm over very low heat, stirring occasionally, but do not allow to boil. Stir in the liqueur, then set aside until almost cold, but not set. With an electric mixer, beat the chocolate mixture for a couple of minutes — this will give the cake a lovely airy texture. Pour onto the amaretti base. Let cool, then cover and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, or up to 48 hours before serving.
To make the cardamom cocoa sugar, remove the black seeds from the papery cardamom pods and put the seeds in a spice grinder with the sugar and cocoa. Grind to a powder. Carefully remove the cake from the pan and peel off the lining paper. Set on a chilled serving plate and sift the cardamom cocoa sugar evenly over the top. Serve immediately, cut into very thin slices.
DELISH! This recipe for “Chocolate Cardamom Truffle Cake” from Maxine Clark’s “Chocolate” (Ryland, Peters & Small) will amaze that special someone and make this Valentine’s Day extra special. www.seasonsmagazineonline.com
