In regards to their IRIS program, IRIS stands for Immediate Recognition Increases Safety. This program is free and anyone can register for at www. afyi-iris.org (parents or guardians can register and enroll their child or dependent as a member and those who are over 18 years can register and enroll themselves). The program is dedicated to the safety of those on the Autism Spectrum and those with Neurological or Brain Disorders. This includes those with Alzheimers, MS, Intellectual Development Disabilities, Down’s Syndrome, Brain Injury, PTSD and others. IRIS provides 24 hour access to members emergency information and contacts through their emergency hotline.

Another part of their IRIS program is their communication app, which is available for free in the app stores. This app contains picture language and emojis, so ﬁrst responders can communicate easily with the individual. It also contains their 24hour emergency hotline information and the 5 Keys To De-Escalation. Autism FYI was founded by Dr. James Benjamin and his wife Joyce in 2014 to help advance awareness of the needs surrounding people with Autism. They accomplish this goal of theirs through a safety membership program offered by their organization that is called IRIS, as well as through training that creates community awareness about Autism and allows businesses to become “Autism Friendly Certiﬁed”, which allows them to create a more inclusive community for those with Autism.

East Islip High School senior Chiara Mosca recently received a perfect score on the Advanced Placement Research Exam, which was taken in May 2021. AP Exams are scored on a scale of 1 to 5. Mosca not only received the top score of 5, but was also one of only 375 students – amounting to just 1.56% of 2021 AP Research Exam takers – from around the world to earn every point possible on this challenging college-level examination. “We applaud Chiara’s mastery of the content and skills of this AP course and wish her many future successes,” AP Program head Trevor Packer said. “I am extremely proud of Chiara, but not surprised at all,” said Sheryl Ingoglia, Mosca’s AP Research teacher last year. “Right off the bat, at the beginning of the 20202021 school year, Chiara was on the Google Classroom full of ideas and ambition.

East Islip’s Girls Soccer Team Recognized With Awards

East Islip High School’s girls soccer team and many of its members were recently recognized for their outstanding season by the state, the county and the Suffolk County Girls Soccer Coach Association, earning numerous awards for the 2021 season.

Kate Alexander was named Division II Class A,B,C Player of the Year, and Nikki Brunner was named Division II Class A,B,C Defensive Player of the Year. Alexander and Brunner both also earned All-State and All-County status.

Jenna Borelli was named Suffolk County Championship Game MVP and Ben Diallo was named Suffolk County Division II Coach of the Year. Borelli, Krista Deutsch, Mikayla Horton, Dylann Trahey and Julianna Violi earned All-Division status.
