East Islip High School’s National Honor Society recently organized its most successful annual food drive. With the participation of the school’s Class of 2025, the World Language Honor Society, Career Development and Occupational Studies students, Student Government, and clubs such as SADD, STARS, Interact Club, Key Club and Leaders Club, this became a true community event.

The entire district was divided into 49 geographic zones. Over 200 students volunteered and were placed in groups to distribute ﬂyers to more than 8,000 households during Veterans Day weekend, making the community aware of the collection date of Nov. 15. That evening, the students went back to their assigned zones to collect any donations that the community left for donation.

According to the National Honor Society, this was its most successful year to date. A total of 152 turkeys and thousands of pounds of food were donated. Many members of the community came and dropped off donations as well. In a true example of EI Pride, local food pantries at the Church of St. Mary, the Church of St. Peter the Apostle and Full Gospel Assembly are now overﬂowing with the generosity of the East Islip community.

teacher Meagan Faughnan put together a slideshow that teachers played for their classes. Some classes also invited veteran visitors to the school, to allow students to acknowledge and appreciate their hard

work and dedication to keeping the community safe. “My students loved welcoming some first responders into our class and recognizing their hard work,” Faughnan said.

The Girl Scouts Of Suffolk County’s Annual Holiday Light Show Is Back, Bigger And Brighter Than Ever

Event Will Include A Half-Mile Walk-Through Extravaganza Featuring Holiday -Themed Light Displays, Pictures With Santa Claus, And Delicious Snacks

Along with being a favorite holiday attraction among families from throughout Long Island, the seasonal event serves as an essential fundraiser for Girl Scouts of Suffolk County to help expand the access girls throughout Suffolk County have to the empowering Girl Scout experience.

Early bird tickets go on sale October 1st. “This year’s Holiday Light Show event promises to be more engaging and interactive than ever before,” said Tammy Severino, Girl Scouts of Suffolk County President and CEO. “Making the event a walk-through this year enables us to bring in more light displays and create a more personalized, magical holiday experience. Alongside the mesmerizing light displays, families can

enjoy delightful activities, including photos with Santa Claus, festive snacks, games, and more. We are dedicated to creating a joyous atmosphere that fosters togetherness and creates cherished memories for everyone.” This is the 20th anniversary of the annual Girl Scouts of Suffolk County Holiday Light Show, which had been previously located at Smith Point County Park as a drivethrough event since 2016, when it outgrew the site at Camp Edey in Bayport. Last year was the first year the Girl Scouts offered a walkthrough holiday village as part of the annual light show extravaganza, which received rave reviews and overwhelming demand to be brought back that Girl Scouts of Suffolk County expanded it by five times. Each year, the event attracts more than 50,000 visitors from throughout Long Island, Queens, Westchester and even out of state. This year, there will be 80 light displays ranging from 50 to 200 feet. The dazzling holiday light displays are assembled and

built in part by GSSC staff and dedicated volunteers from PSEG Long Island, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1049 and Local 25, and the Long Island Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association. Proceeds from the Holiday Light Show and Enchanted Forest benefit girl leadership programs and provide financial assistance for girls to join Girl Scouts and attend our summer camp program. Last year, more than 40 Suffolk County Girls were able to attend Girl Scouts summer camp this year thanks to scholarships funded by the 2022 Holiday Light Show proceeds. “The Girl Scouts of Suffolk County take great pride in putting together this event each year,” said Severino. “It’s a unique program as it spreads holiday joy, but it also enables us to offer girls opportunities that can shape their futures in remarkable ways. Every ticket sold directly contributes to our mission of nurturing confident, capable, and compassionate leaders of tomorrow. We thank

everyone for their support and hope to see you at the Light Show this holiday season.” The Girl Scout Holiday Light Show will run Thursdays through Sundays through Saturday, December 30th, excluding December 24th and 25th, from 5 pm to 9 pm. The Girl Scouts of Suffolk County recently announced that the 2023 annual Girl Scout Holiday Light Show will now be located at Southaven County Park in Yaphank through December 30th. This year, the light show will be a fully immersive, walk-through Enchanted Forest, which features 80 illuminated holiday-themed displays— including five that were designed by award-winning Girl Scouts. Adding to the

According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of

candidates for NEDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without the structure of tests. Music courses can have a profound impact on students, potentially helping them perform better in other subjects. A recent study from the American Psychological Association found that high school students who take music courses score significantly better on exams in subjects like math and science than their nonmusical peers.

The improved academic performance was more pronounced among students who learned to play an instrument rather than vocal music. The researchers behind the study examined the records of more than 112,000 students in British Columbia. Among the students whose records were studied, 13 percent had participated in at least

one music course in grade 10, 11 or 12. Researchers discovered that, on average, children who learned to play a musical instrument for many years and ultimately played in a high school band or orchestra were the equivalent of roughly one academic year ahead of their peers in regard to their English, mathematics and science skills.
