As popular as making resolutions may be, reports indicate that they’re more popular to make than commit to. For example, a 2015 report from U.S. News & World Report indicated that 80 percent of resolutions fail. So how can men and women become part of the minority who see their resolutions through to fruition? The following strategies may help: • Plan on being patient. Men and women who expect immediate results may be in for some disappointment, and that can compromise their future efforts. Recognize that resolutions rarely produce overnight results, and that commitments to losing weight and saving more money take time. If necessary, set small goals that can serve as markers on your way to achieving the larger goal.

• Don’t be shy. Sharing your resolution with others is a great way to generate support for your pursuit. And that support can motivate you if you hit a rough patch and keep you on track as you progress toward your goal. By sharing your resolution with others, you’re also indirectly inviting others who might have set similar goals in the past to offer insight and/or advice, which can prove invaluable. • Expect setbacks. Just like it’s important to be patient, it’s equally important to recognize there will be setbacks. Men and women who resolve to save more money and have set specific monthly savings goals should not allow one monthly shortfall to derail all of their efforts. An unforeseen expense such as an automotive or home repair might compromise your ability to meet your monthly savings goal. Such setbacks are inevitable regardless of your resolution, so don’t be discouraged when they happen. Just commit to getting back on track in time to meet your next goal. Successful New Year resolutions might be hard to come by. But there are ways to stay the course and see resolutions through to realization.

hile it’s difficult to gauge just how many people make New Year resolutions each year, various factors suggest millions of people resolve to improve their lives each January. Television segments devoted to healthy resolutions and discounted memberships are just two of many indicators suggesting resolutions are popular and potentially big business.

• Be as specific as possible. In addition to being patient, being specific when deciding on a resolution can increase the likelihood that the successful pursuit of that resolution will have as positive an impact on your life as possible. New Year’s Resolutions Work, If You Work Them. Last year, on December 31, 2017, I elected to spend New Year’s Eve quietly at home with my son and one of my brothers, and it was fabulously serene. We cooked a beautiful meal, watched movies, had some heart-to-heart talks and sat together on a big comfy couch to watch the ball drop. That night, as 2017 turned to 2018, I thought about the fact that I hadn’t had my entertainment column since I’d exited an in-house editor position that I worked at from 2005 through 2012. I thought about how much I missed speaking with interesting people and writing their stories. It has always felt like my life’s work. In that moment, I declared to myself that 2018 would be the year that I would bring my column back to life, and this go around, I would own my own intellectual property and be the master of my own fate. I put it out there for the universe to work its magic and let it go. On the morning of January 3, 2018, I sprang out of bed with an inspired idea. I would contact

entertainment editors around the world, introduce myself and my old column, let them know I was looking to begin again and ask if they would like to join my new syndication network. I am not sure what it was, the planets aligning, or perhaps the universe conspiring to make my New Year’s resolution come true, but before I knew it, I had one hundred media outlets across the globe on board. Now, as I approach New Year’s Eve 2018 and New Year’s Day 2019, I look back at what I have accomplished with my entertainment interview column. I am filled with pride that I didn’t just take another aimless trip around the sun this past year. I made every moment count and my New Year’s resolution was accomplished. As you are aware, I have not one, but two columns (of course “Living Well” is the second, and happened most serendipitously). One year ago today, I did not have either. That’s how much a life can change in a year. I don’t state this to brag, but to turn you into a believer, because

I want your New Year’s resolution to happen for you, in spades, in 2019. I want you to look back in December of 2019 feeling on top of the world because you just took the most productive and joyous trip around the sun; greater than you ever thought was within the realm of possibility. We’ve all heard the jokes made about how everyone is going to join a gym and get into the best shape of their life or finally sit down at the computer to write that novel. I get it. But frankly, what does that have to do with you? So some people don’t follow through. Be the person who does. Whether or not you cross more amazing things off your bucket list in 2019 or put your dreams in the “coulda-woulda-shoulda” pile is in nobody else’s hands but your own. It could be something leisure related. Perhaps you have been meaning to take an art class or a course at your local college. Maybe you want to learn to cook. There are no small goals; no small desires. On December 31st, declare it so, and make it so.

Rice Krispies are a classic breakfast cereal and chicken is always a dinner favorite. Blend the two and you’ve got a fun and delicious dinner recipe that the whole family will love!

Rochelle first learned about this recipe when her children were growing up and she was looking for new ways to engage the whole family in dinner. “A good friend of mine told me about a cereal chicken recipe that was passed down through her family, and she assured me that my kids would love it. She was right! We’ve been making it ever since, and now my daughter makes it for her own family.”

Receiver of Taxes Announces Extended Holiday Hours Islip Town Receiver of Taxes, Alexis Weik, has announced that her office, located at 40 Nassau Avenue, Islip, is accepting payment of 2018/2019 taxes. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with the following exceptions: On December 31st the office will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon and we will be closed on

Options for Community Living, Inc. is a local not for profit organization whose mission is to assist individuals and families in need develop their fullest potential for independent living. Options was formed in 1982 to respond to the need for supportive housing for people with serious mental illness. The Mental Health Residential Program grew rapidly, and in 1994 Options introduced case management services to Long Islanders living with HIV/AIDS. Soon after, a housing program for this population was started as well. More recently, Options has partnered with Long Island Health Homes to offer care coordination services to high need Medicaid users with chronic illnesses through the Access to Care Program. As of today, Options serves more than 1,800 adults and children annually through its programs and manages over 180 scattered housing sites across Nassau and Suffolk counties! Options care coordinators help connect people to health care services and a myriad of resources. Often their clients are homeless or on the brink of homelessness. This is especially difficult when young children are involved. Last year, the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless reported that on a given night in January, 3,937

people on Long Island are homeless. 75% are families with children. The following story shows an example of what is possible when help is provided and hope is not lost! When their care coordinator Fran first met Linda, she and her daughter had been homeless for over a year and were living in a women’s shelter. Linda had experienced a lot of trauma in her life, the greatest of which was learning that she had contracted the HIV virus following a long-term relationship. Fran provided Linda with some housing resources and when she found an apartment, Fran helped her apply for financial assistance to cover the security deposit. Linda has maintained her housing for over a year now! “The most satisfying feeling came over me during my first visit to Linda’s apartment,” said Fran, “when her daughter pulled me by the hand to show me her room.” If you wish to inquire about receiving help as well, or you want to volunteer and or donate to this organization, please contact their Development Director, Denise Waterhouse at DWaterhouse@OptionsCL.org!

East Islip High School seniors Christopher Palmer and Melissa Sconone were named recipients of the 2017-2018 Suffolk Zone awards. Both students were honored at the annual Suffolk Zone Awards dinner, held at Villa Lombardi’s on November 28th.

The awards are presented to the top male and female physical education students in each Suffolk County high school’s graduating class, by the Suffolk Zone Chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. The criteria for selection include outstanding character and leadership qualities, strong contributions to the overall positive tone of physical education and health classes as well as their school, and an A average or above 90 in physical education classes and an overall grade point average of 3.0. “Melissa and Christopher

make a terrific effort to be cooperative, honest, poised, self-confident, attentive, industrious and enthusiastic regarding all class activities, and they are always working to support the instructional efforts of their classes,” said Stephen Restivo, East Islip’s director of health, physical education and athletics. East Islip Career Breakfast This year’s Catch-ACareer Breakfast at the Irish Coffee Pub was another great success for East Islip High School’s career exploration program, with more than 90 students spending the morning discussing careers and future plans with over 60 professionals from numerous fields. During this annual networking event, developed by the East Islip School-Business

Partnership and teachers Bridget Lopiccolo and Paul McHugh, each student had the opportunity to meet with two professionals during the morning. The high schoolers heard firsthand what it takes to enter a specific career field and what college courses would be optimal, and learned about the skills that they will need when applying for a job and what resources are available to them as they begin their

journey from high school to college to a full-time job. “We want to thank all the professional men and women who attended this event and provided our students with some very important information that will help them to prepare for the next step in their journey to success,” said Israel Malinowitzer, East Islip’s director of careers and student services.

Each week I write this column that I started a little over a year ago, but for this issue I wanted to mention a fundraiser that I started through an oragnization that is very dear to my heart, The Water Project. The Water Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that unlocks homan potential by providing reliable water projects to communities in sub-Saharan Africa, which suffer from a lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation. My fundraising goal is $12,000, which if reached will allow this organization to fully fund a water project in a needy community! If I do not reach my fundraising goal, they will take all that I raised and put it towards helping as many people as possible in sub-Saharan Africa. I can not imagine lacking access to clean water and it breaks my heart knowing that is a reality for some people. I can’t sit back and do nothing about this problem.
