Fr. Richard E. Simpson, rector, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Islip, is adamant: “Christmas joy this year is about fighting hunger.” He adds that by the end of this year, it’s estimated that 54 million Americans will go to bed hungry, with 17 million of those children. Santa agreed, so despite December 5th’s torrential rainfalls, high winds, and cold temperatures, the church, at 754 Montauk Highway at St. Mark’s Lane

in Islip, NY, continued its monthly outdoor contactless food drop, raising over 20,000 items. Santa had helpers from the parish, communityat-large and Islip Rotary, as well as students from Stony Brook University. They all managed to protect the food, and themselves, from the wet. Shrugging off the terrible December 5th weather, Santa said he was “proud owner of an umbrella.” And the cars

just kept rolling in to drop off food. All donations were sent to God’s Provisions, an affiliate of LI Cares. The organization distributes food to pantries at churches, shelters and senior communities throughout Long Island’s South Shore. The 12th Annual Bethpage Turkey Drive for Island Harvest, which took place on November 20, collected 3,157 turkeys, 28,000 pounds of food and raised more than $17,000 to date, to support Long Islanders experiencing food insecurity, an issue which is escalating resulting from the Coronavirus pandemic. For the first time, this year’s turkey drive was contactless to ensure that community residents and businesses were able to safely drop off their holiday donations. For those who were unable to make a donation to the drive, Bethpage Federal Credit Union has set up an online donation page, where monetary contributions can be made directly to Island Harvest. Islip Seniors Alexander And Bono Win Suffolk Zone Awards Islip High School seniors Matthew Alexander and Rosa Bono were recently recognized as the winners of this year’s Suffolk Zone awards. The Suffolk Zone Chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education,

Recreation and Dance annually honors the top male and female physical education students in each Suffolk County high school graduating class. The criteria include attainment of at least a 3.0 or B overall grade point average, an A or 90 in physical education

and health classes, outstanding character in both classroom and school, exceptional leadership in the school environment, and status as a physical fitness role model for other students.

East Islip Key Club Raises $200 During Movember

Masks have made mustaches less obvious this school year, but the East Islip High School Key Club continued its annual participation in the annual Movember fundraiser for men’s health initiatives, led by social studies teacher

and Key Club adviser Daniel Falkman. With the help of Key Club President Hannah Lemp and Vice President Michaela Penafiel, the club raised $200 this year. Falkman and the club have raised more than $1,400 for the cause

over the last decade. “Our Key Club is always looking for ways to help in our community as well as looking at problems that face our world,” Falkman said.

Olivia Zhang named Semper Fidelis All-American East Islip High School senior and Olivia Zhang was recently named a Semper Fidelis All-American for 2020. She was recognized with an award presentation at the high school on Nov. 20, attended by Staff Sgt. Christopher Rivera, a Semper Fidelis program representative, as well as district administrators and Zhang’s adviser and Semper Fidelis mentor Lisa Rapiejko. Zhang was one of less than 100 student-athletes

nationwide chosen from 5,600 applicants by the U.S. Marine Corps as an All-American based on exceptional moral character and academic performance in addition to noteworthy athletic abilities. In a typical year, Semper Fidelis AllAmericans and a mentor of their choice would have been honored this past summer at the Battles Won Academy experience in Washington, DC, but the event was canceled due to

the COVID-19 pandemic. Serving as Student Council President, Zhang is also a member of her school’s Math Honor Society, Foreign Language Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society, Interact Club, Academic Team and tennis and track teams. She also holds the rank of petty officer second class in the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps and was chosen to be a facilitator for the Rotary Club’s Youth Leadership program.
