Autism FYI was founded by Dr. James Benjamin and his wife Joyce in 2014 to help advance awareness of the needs surrounding people with Autism. They accomplish this goal of theirs through a safety membership program offered by their organization that is called IRIS, as well as through training that creates community awareness about Autism and allows businesses to become “Autism Friendly Certiﬁed”, which allows them to create a more inclusive community for those with Autism.

The League of Yes affords children and adults with disabilities the opportunity to play

baseball. Samantha volunteers with the group every Saturday. Dylan Lange, Kaeli McAnally, Jillian Oggeri, Taryn Quinn, Hunter Rindos, Richard Rindos and Noah Whitehouse made the trip to The Yes Baseball Field in Brookhaven where they assisted Samantha

in coaching participants in batting, fielding and running. More importantly, the Islip athletes served as buddies to the baseball players. It was a wonderful experience for the baseball players, their families and the Islip athletes.

Long Island State Parks To Host 27th Annual Winter Run Series

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that the Long Island State Park Region will host its 27th annual Winter Run Series beginning January 2022. The series will begin Sunday, January 9th at Heckscher State Park. Additional runs will be held January 9th at Heckscher State Park, January 16th at Robert Moses State Park, January 23rd at Sunken Meadow and January 30th at Jones Beach State Park. CANDY COLLECTION FOR A CAUSE - While Islip community children counted and sorted their Halloween candy, Brianne Moon, a fourth grade student at Commack Road Elementary School, had a different goal for the candy she collected. From Nov. 1-10, Brianne accepted community donations totaling 232 pounds of holiday treats, which she then donated to the Ronald McDonald House. Brianne has been collecting candy for the Ronald McDonald House for the past three years. Since she cannot eat most sweets due to her allergies to peanuts, sesame and dairy, Brianne decided to ensure children dealing with major medical issues had a chance to savor holiday candy. Being activated for relief efforts in a time of desperate need or being stationed in remote locations far away from home can be difficult. Troops sometimes find themselves needing support services provided by the United Service Organizations (USO). To boost morale for American service members all around the globe, the USO is meeting them where they are. “The heart of our mission is to ensure service members stay strong through connecting them to the things they love and fight for,” says Christopher Plamp, senior vice president of operations, programs, and entertainment at the USO. “When the pandemic prevented us from serving in person as we have done for over our 80-year history, we innovated new ways to virtually foster the spirit of connectedness. As we look forward to a post-pandemic future, we are proud to continue

strengthening the military – no matter the time or place.” Here are a few ways the USO brings vital morale and essential services directly to the nation’s military in far-reaching corners of the world: • For military units stationed in distant locations where there is no USO presence, USO2GO packages bridge the gap. USO2GO kits ensure service members have some of the small comforts of home, such as electronic gaming, sports equipment, board games, movies and personal care items. In 2020, USO2GO was heavily utilized to support quarantine sites for service members at military installations around the world. • Service members can be called at a moment’s notice to leave their families and homes to respond to emergency situations – all amidst a global pandemic. As troops work to save lives in moments of crisis, Mobile USO vehicles provide vital resources, support and comfort. These units also help serve the National Guard in times of natural disasters such as hurricanes, wildfires, tornados and more. Equipped with food preparation areas, WiFi, TVs, relaxation areas, gaming stations and outdoor activities, these

USO centers on wheels are a welcoming haven for military members in hardto-reach areas. • Virtual and in-person entertainment reconnects service members to experiences and memories of home. Since April 2020, USO Military Virtual Programming (MVP) entertainment programs have hosted 135 sessions with more than 170 entertainers. MVP events reached 49 countries, including 22 ships at sea and 52 U.S. states and territories. Attendees engaged with celebrities via live Q&A sessions, performances, one-on-one calls and more than 140 live “look-ins” at military locations. • The USO Care Package Program provides service members with two different types of care packages: Snack Packs and Toiletry Packs. These care packages give busy troops a needed boost. In November 2020, the 3 millionth care package since 9/11 was delivered to a service member stationed in East Africa. 5 Ways To Protect Your Holiday Budget (StatePoint) It may be the season of cheer, but for many, the holidays are rife with anxiety about expenses. Do your homework in advance to pay significantly less and wait for big sales days, such as Super Saturday before Christmas, which is great for last-minute gifts. 3. Purchase gift cards with peace of mind. State Parks Announces Hunting Schedules For 2021/2022 The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced that hunting will be permitted within specific areas of select Long Island State Parks for the upcoming hunting season. Hunting regulations in state parks are developed in cooperation with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), which establishes hunting seasons throughout the state. In addition to statewide hunting rules, special restrictions are in effect in state parks to protect visitors and to address wildlife management goals for each park. Hunters are advised to check with the state park regional office and with the local DEC wildlife management office for specific information. See the website at www.dec.ny.gov. All hunters must have a valid New York State hunting license and, to hunt waterfowl, must also be registered in the Harvest Information Program (https://www.dec.ny.gov/ permits/6405.html) and have a federal migratory bird hunting stamp (“duck stamp”). Reports of rabies in deer

have been rare, but hunters and other park users should be alert to the possibility of encountering a rabid raccoon, fox or skunk. To reduce the risk of exposure, follow these guidelines: • Do not approach wildlife that acts abnormally. • Do not touch any animal found dead for unknown reasons. Hunters are advised to wear gloves and eye protection to avoid coming in contact with tissues or bodily fluids that may carry infectious disease. To obtain a copy of the rules and regulations for hunting big and small game, contact any DEC office, including the Regional Wildlife office at SUNY Stony Brook, 50 Circle Road, Stony Brook, NY 11790-3409, (631) 444-0310.
