When to Abandon the “Thinking” Mind One cannot accomplish anything of great significance with the thinking mind in the way. As I sit down to write this week’s column, I notice that I am in my head, which will not do, so I turn my attention to Miles Davis’ Blue is Green song playing on my phone. The soothing rhythmic sound of jazz takes me out of my thinking mind and places my energy back to that intangible place where creativity is born. It’s between the dream-state consciousness and waking consciousness, where anything seems possible, and we do not question the validity of our ideas. While it’s true that our brain is the machine that powers and processes the application of practical knowledge, those magic “aha” moments that hit us seemingly out of nowhere and have the supernatural ability to transform our lives, make themselves known when we are doing just about anything other than “thinking.” If you’ve experienced this even once in your life, you surely know what I mean.
A 2016 article in The Atlantic, titled, “The Trippy State Between Wakefulness and Sleep” states, “There is a brief time, between waking and sleep, when reality begins to warp. Rigid conscious thought starts to dissolve into the gently lapping waves of early stage dreaming, and the world becomes a little more hallucinatory; your thoughts a little more untethered.” It’s that untethered state, when we forget about time and space, and who we are supposed to be, that we do not judge our ideas or our creative impulses. It’s similar to a young child’s state of consciousness, before they learn to be self-conscious and selfcritical. A January 2018 Wall Street Journal article titled, “For Babies, Life May Be A Trip,” states, “Fascinating new neuroscience research suggests that when adults dream or have psychedelic experiences, their brains are functioning more like children’s brains. It appears that the experience of babies and young children is more like dreaming
or tripping than like our usual grown-up consciousness.” She goes on to say, “Like most adults, I spend most of my waking hours thinking about getting things done. Scientists have discovered that when we experience the world in this way, the brain sends out signals along the established, stable, efficient networks that we develop as adults.” The part of the brain where adults tend to spend most of their waking hours will help keep you safe, get to work on time, and remember to pick up the dry cleaning, but it’s not your friend when it comes to living outside the box or taking creative risks. In order to experience life in a more dynamic, passionate and creative way, we need to develop strategies for breaking us out of the thinking, critical mind so that we are able to tap into the higher collective consciousness from where all creativity and inspired ideas flow forth. December’s Charity of the Month is:
Options for Community Living, Inc. is a local not for profit organization whose mission is to assist individuals and families in need develop their fullest potential for independent living. Options was formed in 1982 to respond to the need for supportive housing for people with serious mental illness. The Mental Health Residential Program grew rapidly, and in 1994 Options introduced case management services to Long Islanders living with HIV/AIDS. Soon after, a housing program for this population was started as well. More recently, Options has partnered with Long Island Health Homes to offer care coordination services to high need Medicaid users with chronic illnesses through the Access to Care Program. As of today, Options serves more than 1,800 adults and children annually through its programs and manages over 180 scattered housing sites across Nassau and Suffolk counties! Options Mental Health Residential Programs provide supportive housing opportunities for Long Island residents recovering from serious mental illness under the auspices of the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH). Options services are person-centered, collaborative and recovery-oriented. Care coordinators help to improve individual health by arranging medical care, doctor visits, participation in mental health treatment and substance use disorder services, pediatric health and specialty services for children, linkage to community groups and resources and more. Additionally, the agency offers Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) to help individuals recovering from mental illness and/ or addiction.
Long Island has more AIDS cases than any other suburban community in the U.S. Options operates more than 50 scattered units of supportive housing for people living with HIV/ AIDS and provides additional Ryan White funded case management services for this vulnerable population. Affordable housing linked to services – provides low-income, disabled and formerly homeless people with the help they need to stay housed and live more independent, healthy and fulfilling lives. Their agency operates a thrift shop located at 392 Hawkins Avenue in Lake Ronkonkoma. This thrift shop is open Tuesday – Saturday and relies on donations and community volunteers. The shop can be contacted at (631) 676-4579 and is in need of volunteers to help with sorting, tagging, working the register and additional duties. Volunteers must be 18 or older. Additionally, this organization takes donations of personal hygiene items (shampoo, hand soap, lotion and toothbrushes) and household cleaning necessities (laundry detergent and cleaners.) Lastly, this organization is available to conduct presentations at schools or in the community regarding their programs and/or on matters pertaining to HIV/AIDS and mental illness. East Islip Students of the Month The East Islip Chamber of Commerce recently honored East Islip High School senior Heather McNamara and junior Ashley Rosenthal as Students of the Month. Both were chosen for their community service as well as the numerous afterschool activities that both students are actively involved in every day of the year. McNamara, who will graduate next June, plans to major in special education and minor in sign language as part of her
career goal of becoming a teacher. She is president of the Key Club and a member of the National Honor Society, National Art Honor Society and SADD Club. McNamara serves as an ambassador for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, helping grant wishes to six children to date, as well as the Kiwanis Club of the Islips, and as is a spokesperson for the New York Blood Center and NewYorkPresbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center. She volunteers at the
Hospitality Too Soup Kitchen at St. Anne’s Church in Brentwood. Rosenthal, the webmaster for the school’s Key Club, also serves as treasurer for the Student Council and is a member of the Foreign Language Honor Society, Academic Club, Environmental Club, French Club, Interact Club, Leaders Club, Peer Club, STARS Club and Yearbook Club. She also tutors hearing impaired students in English and geometry at the Cleary School for the Deaf.

Lacrosse Letters of Commitment Four outstanding student-athletes and team captains from from East Islip High School – Lindsay Guzzetta, Kendall Mittleman, Melissa Sconone and John Sidorski – signed national letters of intent on November 21st, committing to play lacrosse in college next September. The seniors were congratulated by Superintendent John Dolan and Athletic Director Stephen Restivo for their achievement, in front of their proud families. Guzzetta, a midfielder, will play for Plattsburgh University, where she plans to major in health and wellness. Guzzetta, a member of the school’s
Foreign Language Honor Society and Honor Roll, was named All-Division in lacrosse as well as AllCounty, All-Division and All-Tournament in field hockey. Mittleman, who plays attack, will join the Drexel University team. She has been named AllCounty in field hockey and All-County Honorable Mention in lacrosse and is the president of East Islip’s National Honor Society. Sconone, who also plays attack, signed with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She plans to major in exercise and sports science. She has been named All-County and MVP, was a member of the
Under Armour highlight team and a Newsday Top 100 Player, finished as one of the top 10 scorers in Suffolk County, and was nationally ranked by “Inside Lacrosse” at No. 25 and was the third ranked attacker in the 2019 class. Sidorski, who plays attack and midfield, signed with Lehigh University where he plans to major in business. He was named All-County and All-League, a U.S. Lacrosse AllAmerican, 2018 Attackman of the Year, a rising junior and sophomore All-Star, and a member of the Super 7 Champs team. He was nationally ranked by “Inside Lacrosse” at No. 33 in the 2019 class.

East Islip High School’s boys and girls crosscountry teams recently traveled to Orlando to compete in the Disney Cross Country Classic, battling some of the best teams from around the country as well as the oppressive heat. More than 100 people joined Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, members of the Islip Town Board, state and local elected officials and members of the Islip community, at a kickoff celebration marking the Town of Islip’s 335th Birthday. Town officials “flipped the switch” turning the Town Hall Cupola a deep shade of blue, to commemorate the founding of the Town of Islip by William Nicholl on November 29th 1638. William Nicholl purchased approximately 50,000 acres of land from Chief Winnequaheagh of Connetquot 335 years ago, and named it Islip Grange in honor of his hometown of Islip, England. He later received an official royal patent for the land from King Charles II.
Supervisor Carpenter welcomed the Color Guard by the Islip American Legion Rusy Bohm Post 411 and the Lt. Michael C. Murphy Sea Cadets. Senator Phil Boyle led the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the singing of the Star Spangled Banner by Retired SCPD, Jim Edmonds. A performance by the Brentwood High School Marching Band wowed the crowd, as did a visit by Long Island Ducks Mascot Quacker Jack. “It is truly an honor to be the current Supervisor who, along with the members of our Town Board, have the privilege of kicking-off our yearlong celebration, starting with today’s Cupola lighting, continuing with a Springtime “Living History” Tour at the Grange in June, an Islip
Family Day at Ducks Stadium, and a Family Fun Day at Roberto Clemente Park in August. Our yearlong celebration will culminate next December with a closing ceremony, and the burial of our Time Capsule,” said Supervisor Carpenter. Local sponsors included Campbell’s Bakery, Islip Town Historian George Munkenbeck, Marconi Manor, UPSEU, Long Island Ducks, the West Islip Chamber of Commerce, Lt.
