The Islip Town Youth Bureau Annual Holiday Toy Drive is currently underway and your help is needed to ensure each child in our Town has a special and joy-filled holiday. Be a part of this wonderful initiative to give cheer to those less fortunate, by bringing new and unwrapped toys to any of our drop-off locations, by December 16th. Donations for this year’s drive are currently low. Your help is needed to make this year a success! In 1992, John Theissen held a toy drive during the holiday season to benefit children in local hospitals. During this first drive, he collected over 800 new toys in just 2 weeks! That was

the beginning of what has become the year round organization, John Theissen Children’s Foundation. Since 1992, this organization has collected over 1 million new toys and have donated them to sick and underpriviledged children in over 180 hospitals and child-care facilities. However, this Foundation does more than just collect and distribute toys. They also provide hospitals and child-care facilities with therapeutic and recreational equipment, support families with financial assistance to defray medical expenses, fulfill patient’s wishlists throughout the year (for those 18 years of age

Supporting SADD At East Islip’s Nov. 7 Board of Education meeting, the district honored Alivia Ancona from John F. Kennedy Elementary School and Lana Mollica from Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School as the winners of the annual SADD Red Ribbon anti-drug slogan contest. The two fifth graders were recognized by Superintendent John Dolan and Board of Education President William Carpluk. During October, the East Islip High School

SADD Club visited each fifth grade class at JFK and RCK to present information on drugs, alcohol, bullying and what to expect in the middle school. SADD members also ran the districtwide Red Ribbon contest, asking fifth graders to submit creative anti-drug slogans. The younger students then wrote inspirational congratulatory letters to graduating seniors, reminding them of the lessons they had just learned from SADD, which will be presented at next

June’s commencement. “Having the high school students connect with the fifth graders, helping them learn how to avoid destructive decisions, and then the fifth graders relaying that message back to the graduating seniors is so worthwhile,” said Bridget Lopiccolo, the SADD Club’s adviser. “Hopefully every message is heard and practiced, and we can stop this scary epidemic and end drug addiction.”

SANTA HOPS FRONTIER FLIGHT TO WEST PALM BEACH - Islip, NY – Santa Claus gave Rudolph, his sleigh and eight reindeer a break Tuesday, and boarded a Frontier Airlines ﬂight from Long Island MacArthur Airport to West Palm Beach, Florida for a little R&R before his long midnight ride Christmas Eve. Santa posed for pictures with passengers, made note of their Christmas lists, and spread holiday cheer while on board the 6:05am nonstop ﬂight. Catch-A-Career Breakfast East Islip High School’s career exploration program recently held its annual Catch-A-Career Breakfast at the Irish Coffee Pub, allowing 50 business professionals in various career fields and 70 juniors and seniors to meet, network and discuss careers. Set up like a speed dating event, Catch-ACareer helps students understand and decide on their future jobs. “This event was awesome because I got to speak with

businesspeople and ask them important questions about their fields,” said senior Eric Berke. “Most students are not usually given that opportunity, but through this program, we get to do that. Before the breakfast, we practiced and went over how to prepare for the event, which helped me think about the questions before the breakfast and make the most of it.” “East Islip is a step above most schools in

this area because we have been holding this event for 16 years, recognizing that students need to be college and career ready, which is what this program provides,” said Bridget Lopiccolo, who developed and organizes Catch-ACareer with fellow teacher Paul McHugh. In the program’s next step, students can participate in Mentor Me, spending a day shadowing a professional in their desired career field.

LITERACY-ORIENTED nErD CAMP - Islip School District educators recently participated in nErD Camp, an “unconference” with a focus on literacy.
