East Islip High School’s Camryn Kreuscher was named county champion in the 50-yard freestyle at the Section XI girls high school swimming championships, held
at Suffolk Community College on Nov. 3. She also earned a second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle. Kreuscher is now ranked 10th in New York State in the 50-yard and 15th in the 100-yard. She will compete on Nov. 15 and 16 at the state championship in Ithaca. Other members of the East Islip/Connetquot swimming team also found success at the county event. The Book Fairies, located in Freeport, NY, is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that accepts donations of new and gently used books and connects them with organizations throughout all five boroughs and Long Island that do not have the funds to foster the love of reading. Some of those organizations are hospitals, schools, veteran organizations and soup kitchens. Reading materials can not only foster literacy and academic success, but they can also provide a respite from personal struggles and nature a love of reading across age groups. Every book that they collect goes through sorting, their process of thoroughly examining the type of book and condition it’s in. With only 2 staff members, The Book Fairies heavily relies on the work of selfless volunteers.

How to Make Use of a Jacket

Coming up to New York after living in Florida, my nine year old son grew accustomed to living his life in t-shirts and shorts, unencumbered by the heavy winter gear that New Yorkers wear. As the weather has grown colder, he has been resistant to wearing his jacket, hat and gloves; instead insisting on layering t-shirts and sweatshirts. For weeks now, our morning routine has included me begging, pleading, warning him about getting sick, threatening to take away various priviliges, and at
What I’ve realized is, ultimately, I don’t have control. My job as his parent is to empower him with love, values, ideas, compassion, and the information he needs to make the right decisions for himself. All I can do is sit back and allow him to experience the world. This morning, as we were waiting together for the school bus to arrive, I observed that my son’s hat and gloves were inside his backpack; his winter jacket slung over his arm. None of these items were actually on his body. I said, “Uh... you know, carrying a hat and gloves, and holding your winter jacket won’t keep you warm. They only work if you wear them.” He replied, “I know that.” I nodded my head in mutual understanding and said, “Okay, good. I just want to be sure that
It’s my decision,” he slung his arms through his jacket. As a singular stance of independence, he skipped the gloves. I was okay with that. The allowing and the space of freedom it created caused my son to put on his hat and jacket. It was more effective than the begging, the pleading, the vague threats of catching a cold. In life, the more we try to control others or our circumstances and surroundings, the more our desired outcome eludes us. Be in a state of allowing. Just as you would allow the water from a babbling brook to seamlessly run through your fingers rather than trying to clench and trap the water in your hands, allow things to simply be as they are, and watch as your suffering diminishes.

If you are 13 or older you can come alone and if you are younger than 13 you will need a guardian to accompany you. Simply show up at their Freeport location (70 North Main St. - Back Entrance) on one of their sorting days between 10AM and 3PM! James Michael Norrby, Islip Terrace, New York, successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review on October 10, 2018, officially making him the 77th Eagle Scout of Troop 205 of Great River, East Islip, and Islip Terrace, NY. James Eagle Court of Honor will be held on Saturday, December 15, 2018, starting at 11:00AM at the Early Childhood Learning Center, 1 Craig B Gariepy Ave, Islip Terrace, NY 11752. James is a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department, under the direction of Scoutmaster Mark Businski. On his “Road to Eagle,” James served Troop 205 as Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol
Leader, Librarian, and Troop Guide – where he has assisted his younger Scouts in their Rank Advancements. James was elected by his fellow Scouts in Troop 205 to be a member of the Order of the Arrow – the Boy Scout’s honorary camping organization, where he has been a member since 2016. James has had many unique Scouting experiences; including being a participant at the 2017 National Boy Scout Jamboree at the Bechtel Summit Boy Scout High Adventure Base in West Virginia. He was also a summer camper for five summer seasons at the Boy Scout Camp Wakpominee in Ft. Ann, New York. While James has had many fine weekend camping trips with Troop 205, his most memorable were the 2018 Washington, DC trip as he enjoyed the museums and monuments, as well as the Mystic Seaport, CT trip. He has had 68 total camping nights with the Troop. To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must earn 21 merit badges, of which 13 are specifically Eagle required, progress through
six rank advancements – from Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major service project for the community. James has actually earned 32 merit badges. The Service Project that James developed, planned, and implemented with the assistance of his fellow Troop members, friends, and family members was supplying and assembling a Gaga Ball Pit at the Ruth C. Elementary School Playground in Islip Terrace, NY. As James reflects on his Scouting experience, he recently said, “Scouting has influenced my life significantly, teaching me skills I didn’t know, which I can now utilize to help myself and others. Scouting has helped expand my communication skills, leadership skills, and confidence, which has opened me up to trying new things and speaking with other people.” Eagle Scout James Michael Norrby, of Islip Terrace, New York

Finding Locations with Yarn Maps In fifth-grade social studies classes at Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School, students are working on the geography of the Western Hemisphere.
To learn the difference between absolute and relative locations, the fifthgraders used yarn maps to help identify latitude and longitude. Students tied yarn strips to the Mercator
projection maps and moved the strings in comparison to the equator and prime meridian in order to confirm the absolute location of a place.

Celebrating Their Local Veterans In advance of Veterans Day, students in East Islip’s John F. Kennedy and Ruth C. Kinney elementary schools had the chance to invite their family’s veterans to attend special celebrations on November 9th, featuring parades through the schools’ hallways, patriotic
presentations and musical performances. “This day has become my favorite day in East Islip,” Superintendent John Dolan told the assembled veterans. “Because of brave men and women like yourselves, we have great opportunities in this country to do wonderful
things. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all you do and all you’ve done, for being heroes and role models, and most of all, for being mom, dad, grandma, and grandpa. You deserve nothing but our love and support and appreciation.”

Required Qualifications and Skills: • Experience in alarm systems, security products, locking products, access control or video. • Some experience in help desk, technical support, customer service or telephone support is desirable. • Good computer literacy, including MS Windows-based systems and basic networking experience (i.e. understanding of routers, switches, TCP/IP, etc.) • Extremely detail oriented, possess a high sense of urgency and demonstrate world class follow through skills. • Customer service oriented, ‘people person’ with great communication skills (verbal and written). • ‘Team Player’ with ability to work both individually and collaboratively. • Able to work on site within the hours of 8:30 AM to 8:00 PM, Monday through Friday (full 8.5 hour shifts). • Fluency in Spanish is a plus, although not required. (NAPSI)—As the weather gets colder, winterizing your vehicle should be a top priority. The nonprofit Car Care Council recommends that motorists perform a sixpoint winter maintenance check of areas that are particularly affected by driving in rough weather. “Harsh weather can stress out a vehicle, as well as its driver,” explained Rich White, executive director of the nonprofit Car Care Council. “A vehicle that’s properly prepared for the elements can help you avoid an unplanned road emergency when the weather takes a sudden turn for the worse.” Six-Point Vehicle Check 1. Battery—Cold weather is hard on batteries, so it’s wise to check the battery and charging system for optimum performance. Because batteries don’t always give warning signs before they fail, it’s advisable to replace batteries that are more than three years old. 2. Antifreeze— Antifreeze (coolant) should be flushed and refilled at least every two years in most vehicles. Don’t add 100 percent antifreeze, however. Surprisingly, full-strength antifreeze actually has a lower freeze point than when mixed with water. 3. Brakes—Have the brake system checked. Brakes are critical to vehicle safety and particularly important on icy or snow-covered roads. PROTECTING ISLIP’S WETLANDS - A “Protected Wetlands, Please Don’t Litter” 4. Tires—Check the sign has been erected as part of the Keep Islip Clean environmental initiative. spare. If you’ll be driving where snow and ice are a problem, consider special tires designed to grip slick roads. Check tire pressure weekly, as tires lose pressure when temperatures drop. 5. Oil—Be diligent about changing the oil at recommended intervals and check the fuel, air and transmission filters at the same time. Consider changing to low-viscosity oil in winter, as it will flow more easily between moving parts when cold. In subzero driving temperatures, drop oil weight from 10W-30 to 5W-30 as thickened oil can make it hard to start the car. 6. Lights and Wipers— Make sure all exterior and interior lights are working so you can see and be seen. Check the fluid level in the windshield washer reservoir and replace wiper blades that are torn, cracked or don’t properly clean your windshield. In addition, the council recommends a thorough vehicle inspection by a trusted professional service technician as winter magnifies existing
problems such as pings, hard starts, sluggish performance or rough idling. Drivers should keep their vehicle’s gas tank at least half-full to decrease the chances of moisture forming in the gas lines and possibly freezing and stock an emergency kit with an ice scraper and snow brush, jumper cables, flashlight, blanket, extra clothes, bottled water, dry food snacks and needed medication. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers.
