The holiday season sometimes arrives with a frenetic pace. The rush often begins the Friday after Thanksgiving on a day called Black Friday. Plaid Friday was born out of a recognition that the frenzied nature of Black Friday may not be for everyone. The event was created in Oakland, Calif., to transform holiday shopping for family and friends into a more connected, pleasurable activity than Black Friday. Plaid Friday promotes the diversity and creativity of local and independent businesses. On Plaid Friday, customers are urged to shop locally and enjoy choosing gifts in a more leisurely fashion. According to event organizers, the name “Plaid Friday” was chosen from the idea of weaving individual threads of small

businesses together to create a strong fabric that celebrates independent businesses. While Plaid Friday may have originated in California, it has now spread to local towns across the country. Plaid Friday precedes Small Business Saturday, meaning holiday shoppers can turn their two-day, postThanksgiving shopping excursions into 48 hours of opportunities to support small businesses. Shoppers have many different ways to support the Plaid Friday movement. • Look for signage or advertising regarding Plaid Friday. Many establishments may advertise Plaid Friday sales. Keep an eye out for signs or hashtags on social media, such as #plaidfriday, #shoplocal and #dinelocal. • Let others know you’re supporting local businesses. Spread the word about Plaid Friday to others who may not be aware of the movement.

• Wear plaid clothing on Plaid Friday to show local business solidarity. • Search community blotters and other local websites to find out more about Plaid Friday efforts in your community. • Certain shops may have scaled-back sales due to COVID-19 restrictions. Continue to support these businesses as much as possible, taking advantage of curbside pickup or delivery options that can further streamline holiday shopping. • Explore new offerings. Some businesses you frequently shop with may have altered their services and products to fit the changing times. As a result, you may be able to purchase a greater variety of items all in one store. Local shopping is at the heart of Plaid Friday. Shoppers who want to avoid the typical rush of Black Friday shopping can visit small local businesses.

Supporting Small Businesses Supporting small businesses ensures more money stays in the communities those businesses serve. The U.S. Small Business Administration says $48 out of every $100 spent at

a small business stays in the community. On the flip side, when a person spends $100 at a big-box store or a national chain, only $14 remains in the community. Local businesses are more likely to utilize other local

businesses, such as banks, service providers and even farms. Small businesses also pay employees, many of whom are local and shop local, thereby keeping even more dollars in their communities.

A Nod To November

There is much to be thankful for in November. Here’s a look at some of the interesting facts about the month. • Many elections take place in the United States on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November. • November used to be the ninth month of the calendar of Romulus. That all changed when the calendar was modified and January and February were added. • November is 30 days long. It is one of four

Canada and the United States each year on November 11. • November’s full moon is known as the Beaver Moon. Algonquin tribes and colonial Americans would use the month to set beaver traps before the swamps froze to ensure a supply of furs for the winter. Islip Honors 2021 Hall Of Fame Inductees

Buccaneer pride and tradition prevailed on homecoming weekend as the Islip School District inducted individuals into the Islip High School Hall of Fame during a dinner and reception, held in the school gymnasium on Oct. 22. The Hall of Fame honors distinguished members of the high school community who have made notable contributions to society through their profession,

community or institution. During the ceremony, Assistant Principal Curtis Juengerkes announced with pride honorees Kay Poro Erwood (Class of 1954), Robert Anthony Jones (Class of 1991), Anthony Mastrantonio (Class of 1989), Ryan Patrovich (Class of 2006), Pat Petersen (Class of 1978), Melody Thomas (Class of 1969) and the 2004 Islip High School softball team.

“Each of you have made sacrifices and great contributions,” Principal Jon LaRochester said during his opening remarks. “You will serve as role models for generations to come.” After each of the inductees were honored, they participated in an unveiling of the Hall of Fame wall, which holds the plaques near the main entrance to the high school.

East Islip Girls Soccer Team Claims County Title

East Islip High School’s varsity girls soccer team won the county championship on Nov. 2 in splendid fashion. After a terrific 12-12 regular season, the second-seeded East Islip team began the Suffolk Class A playoffs with a 2-1 quarterfinals victory over Sayville. In the semifinals game against third seed Hauppauge, East Islip advanced on penalty kicks, 4-3, following two scoreless 10-minute overtime periods and two five-minute sudden victory periods. In the Nov. 2 championship game against top seed Rocky Point, East Islip claimed

the title with a 4-0 shutout featuring two goals from Jenna Borelli and one each from Kate Alexander and Dylann Trahey. “I am extremely proud of the effort the girls displayed in the finals game,” coach Ben Diallo said. “They executed the game plan from start to finish. The goal was to deprive Rocky Point’s forwards quality balls from their back line and midfield. We put them under constant pressure. Scoring first and adding a mental pressure to the physical one was another element of our game plan that worked perfectly. After the first goal, we kept the intensity up and scored the

second one. From there, we knew we had them because they had to chase the game for the first time this season and we wouldn’t let them. The third element of the game plan was to remain ourselves and play our brand of soccer. The team was brilliant and disciplined the whole way.
