EAST ISLIP COSMETOLOGY STUDENTS DISPLAY FANTASY UPDOS - East Islip High School’s cosmetology students recently created amazing fantasy updos on their manikins, inspired by Halloween and the fall season. Guided by teacher Candice Rodriguez, the students worked all week on their looks, searching for different pictures to use as an inspiration for their creations. Pa l - O - M i n e Equestrian is a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations that was founded by Lisa Gatti. Located at 829 Old Nichols Road in Islandia, Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week. This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with stateof-the-art footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances.They also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. Pal-O-Mine wants you to know just how they can help those who have served in our military, along with those who are still serving our nation. For more than four thousand years, horses have been an integral part of warfare. Today, horses are still playing an important role in war, this time in the recovery of military veterans who have suffered emotional and/ or physical injuries. Pal-O-Mine Equestrian is an EAGALA Designed Military Program.This designation asserts that EAGALA Certified Professionals working with the military have specialized training and experience in the military community. Sessions at the farm are action, not talk and they offer individual, group and family sessions. Pal-O-Mine offers programs to Verterans from Vietnam, Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan and for Service men and women who fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom,
Operation New Dawn, Operation Enduring Freedom and for Active Duty Service Members. It’s not always easy to ask for help, but the benefits of doing so outweigh the fear. One military member who received help from this organizaiton mentioned the following, “For someone in the military like me, it’s hard to swallow my pride and ask for help. This was a safe environment to open up in. East Islip students across the district celebrated Red Ribbon Week from Oct. 26 to 30, focusing on making healthy choices, spreading kindness and being good citizens. Special daily themes included wearing pajamas to show the importance of making good choices the second you wake up; showing off “crazy hair” to let everyone know to use your head to choose your words wisely, do the right thing and be kind; wearing “crazy socks” as a reminder that eating healthy foods is good for you from your head to your toes; wearing school colors to be proud members of a positive East Islip
community; and wearing favorite Halloween colors or outfits while pledging to make good choices. “It’s always great to join in on activities that promote the spirit of making good decisions and good citizenship,” said John F. Kennedy Elementary School Principal Deborah Smith. In prior years, representatives from East Islip High School’s Students Against Destructive Decisions club visited fifth grade classes at JFK and Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School to present for Red Ribbon Week. The high schoolers were not permitted to visit
the elementary schools this year due to COVID-19, so the SADD Club shared a slide presentation with all the fifth grade teachers to show to their classes, which included a video on peer pressure, drug facts, a game and messages to remind students to stay away from drugs. “As we work through the pandemic, we know that we must be creative and still do the important programs that we have always done and send the message that we usually send to the fifth graders in our district,” said SADD adviser Bridget Lopiccolo.

STUDENTS “SELL” HAUNTED HOUSES - For a spooky writing assignment during the last week of October, students at Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School had to use persuasive language to create and “sell” their own haunted houses. They also had to include a written description of their listing, as well as questions and answers for potential buyers. Aging men and women may be tempted to eschew home cooking entirely. After all, there are plenty of convenient frozen or takeout foods available that can be whipped up in a snap. However, there are certain benefits to cooking your own meals. John Moore, DO, an Aetna medical director and senior health specialist, says that cooking can be good for helping to stave off cognitive decline. Dr. Moore notes that, when cooking, the mind is put to use following a recipe and learning new skills and tasks. Furthermore, cooking for oneself can boost seniors’ self-confidence, reassuring them that they can handle an important daily task without having to rely on their family for meals. As long as it is deemed safe (i.e., no sign of cognitive decline), seniors should be encouraged to continue cooking.

Three local legislators, State Sen. Phil Boyle, Assemblyman Andrew Garbarino and Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi paid a visit to Islip High School on Oct. 23 to honor the four seniors who had been chosen by Islip American Legion Rusy-Bohm Post 411 for this past summer’s Boys State leadership programs: James Cottral and Matthew Koebele, who had been selected as primary delegates, and Michael Maisano and Jack McDonald, who were alternates. Although the four were unable to
attend the program due to pandemic restrictions, their accomplishment was recognized by the legislators, American Legion officers and the school’s administration. “We proudly welcome the prospect of having young men of this caliber representing us,” said American Legion Vice Commander James Duffy. “We commend Islip’s teaching staff for the parts the play in shaping citizens who will be great assets to the future of our nation.” “It’s very impressive to be chosen for this,” Boyle told the seniors. “Keep up
the good work and good luck in college to each of you. I know you’re going to make a difference in our community.” “Unfortunately, you gentlemen couldn’t go to Boys State due to COVID-19, but the honor is not in going to Boys State, it’s the honor of being chosen,” Garbarino said. “We are all so proud of you,” Cilmi said. “Thank you for stepping up and being part of the solution here and being outstanding members of this school district.”
The Andrew McMorris Memorial Walkathon will be held on Friday, November 27th after being cancelled due to the initial outbreak of the Corona Virus. The scenic trail walk will be through the beautiful and picturesque Baiting Hollow Scout Camp located at 1774 Sound Avenue, Calverton, NY and will include a tour of the beautiful McMorris Lodge being built at the Camp. The McMorris Family, along with the Suffolk County Council of the Boy Scouts of America are hosting this Walkathon to raise the funds needed to complete the McMorris
Lodge, which is under construction at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp in memory of Andrew Mc Morris. Andrew is the Boy Scout, who was killed by a drunk driver, while hiking the Greenbelt Trail with his Boy Scout Troop 161 in September 2018. Small Businesses Remain Resilient Amid Pandemic Amid the historic coronavirus pandemic, businesses are adapting by making major changes to their operations, including increased use of technology, according to the latest PNC semiannual survey of small and mid-size business owners and executives, which concluded Sept. 8. Eight in 10 business owners reported that they have made adaptations in response to COVID-19, including safety changes in the form of new procedures or physical modifications, while others have adopted workfrom-home policies. “Business owners have learned that the previous status quo won’t work now. The majority of businesses
have reconfigured their operations and for many, these changes will be permanent,” says PNC chief economist, Gus Faucher. “Their confidence may be shaken, but we know through the history of this survey that business owners are resilient and they know how to adapt to change.” According to the survey, half of businesses report increased use of technology since the outbreak began. Nearly three in 10 have added or increased the use of electronic or touchless payment systems, electronic/ website-enabled sales or electronic banking/cash flow management services and 19 percent increased use of fraud/identity
protection tools. The pandemic has also forced many businesses to shake up their product lineups to better align with consumers’ new habits. A third of business owners report making changes either to the way they sell or deliver their products and services or to the types of products and services they offer. Despite these positive signs of transformation and resilience, the drop in business activity over recent months forced many to take drastic measures through workforce reductions; nearly four in 10 businesses have cut workers since the start of the pandemic, although for 87 percent of those, the decrease is

considered temporary or a furlough. In fact, 58 percent of the businesses who had temporary layoffs or furloughs have already
begun rehiring. Faucher said that while the worst may be over and economic activity is on the rebound, the “new normal”

The outbreak of the novel coronavirus COVID-19 in late 2019 and early 2020 had a ripple effect on the world economy. One consequence felt by consumers across the globe was longer than usual delivery times on products purchased
online. Retailers like Amazon and delivery services like the United States Postal Service informed consumers that products and packages may require more delivery time due to limited transportation ability resulting from the
COVID-19 outbreak. That’s an important consideration for holiday shoppers who want the gifts they purchase for loved ones to arrive on time this holiday season. In anticipation of longer delivery times, which may be even longer
during the notoriously busy holiday season than they were at the outset of the pandemic, shoppers may want to begin their shopping early. Doing so not only accounts for longer shipping times, but also increases the chances shoppers
will find what they’re looking for during a time when many retailers’ supply chains have been interrupted. Shoppers concerned by online shopping this holiday season due to the likelihood of catching COVID-19 by contacting cardboard
boxes likely have little to fear. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicated that the chances are low that the virus spreads from packaging that’s shipped over a period of several days at ambient temperatures.

North Shore Rapid COVID-19 Testing Facility Moves to a New Location
In an effort to increase efficiency and ease of access of COVID-19 testing, Nassau County in partnership with Northwell Health has moved the North Shore drive-thru COVID-19 rapid testing facility to 600 Community Drive in Manhasset. The drive-thru rapid testing site will be
open from 10 am to 3pm Monday through Friday. Appointments are required and can be made by calling 1-833-4CARENY (1833-422-7369). This COVID-19 testing is provided free regardless of insurance or immigration status. Testing will be open to Nassau County
residents only and is by appointment only. Note that the testing site will be closed on November 26 and 27 in observation of Thanksgiving. For more information or to make an appointment please call 1-833-4CARENY (1833-422-7369).
