East Islip Soccer Club Girls U9 Travel Team is conducting a shoe drive fundraiser on Saturday, November 20th from 12pm-4pm to raise funds for their team. Team Thunder will earn funds based on the total weight of the pairs of gently worn, used and new shoes collected, as Funds2Orgs will issue a check for the collected shoes. Those dollars will benefit Team Thunder. Anyone can help by donating gently worn, used and new shoes at Westbrook Soccer Complex, 1 Wheeler Rd. in Great River. All donated shoes will then be redistributed

throughout the Funds2Orgs network of micro-enterprise (small business) partners. Funds2Orgs works with micro-entrepreneurs in helping them create, maintain and grow small businesses in developing countries where economic opportunity and jobs are limited. Proceeds from the sales of the shoes collected in shoe drive fundraisers are used to feed, clothe and house their families. Also, statistics show that twenty two veterans decide to take their own life every day. Many of our veterans return home from performing the ultimate duty of serving our country only to face hardship, depression and substance abuse. as black and white drips. National Art Honor Society students helped to create the installation, which is currently hanging in the school’s main lobby. “All of the CORE Art students did an excellent job and I am so proud of

AP Science Students Analyze The Ecosystem At Sunken Meadow

Recently East Islip High School students in Lauren Ferlin’s AP Environmental Science classes traveled to Sunken Meadow State Park where they explored the tidal salt marsh. The students learned about the history of the marsh and the reasons why tidal salt marshes are

so unique and important. They collected abiotic data such as salinity, turbidity, temperature, nitrate, phosphate, dissolved oxygen and pH, and used a seine net to collect biotic data in the tidal creek. Many native and invasive species were found, including banded

killifish, juvenile flounder, Atlantic silversides, juvenile bluefish, fiddler crabs, Asian shore crab, mud snails, hermit crabs, jellyfish and various seaweeds. This data was then analyzed and used to determine the overall health of this ecosystem.

Originating in 1976 when then Massachusetts Governor, Michael Dukakis, declared the first week of November Adoption Week in the state, it was then formally recognized in 1984 when President Gerald Ford signed a proclamation declaring it National Adoption Week. To further increase adoption awareness, in 1995 President Bill Clinton expanded the week to the full month of November, and beginning in 2000, the Saturday before Thanksgiving was declared National Adoption Day. Today, it’s estimated that seven million Americans are adoptees and that one hundred million have direct experience with adoption in their immediate family either having adopted or placed a child for adoption or being an adoptee themselves. While the purpose of National Adoption Month and National Adoption Day is to draw attention to the importance of all adoption-related issues, 2021’s focus is on the critical issues surrounding the adoption of children in foster care. Numbers vary by source, but it’s generally agreed that there are over 400,000 children currently in foster care in the United States (as of 2019, 16,000 of them were in New York

East Islip Girls XC Team Wins First-Ever Division Championship

East Islip High School’s varsity girls cross-country team earned its first league championship since 2009, going 6-0 in the regular season, and then on Oct. 28, won East Islip’s first division championship in school history by a convincing 29 points over their next competitors. During this incredible season, East Islip took first place in three different invitationals, the Jim Smith Invitational at Sunken Meadow on Sept. 11, the Xavier Invitational at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Sept. 25 and the Manhattan College Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park on Oct. 9.

At the latter, famed as the largest cross-country meet in the country, East Islip not only came in first but placed six runners in the top 36. Four members of the team were named AllLeague First Team: senior Joy Petersen, eighth grader Danielle Simonetti, junior Olivia Simonetti and senior Sam Tucci. Those four as well as seventh grader Kathryn Simonetti were named to the All-Division team. The deep squad is rounded out by eighth graders Kaylee Garatina and Grace Micali, freshmen Danielle Birner and Sophia Espinal, juniors Sarah

Birner and Hailey DeHaas, and seniors Gianna Motto and Jenna Scandale. “Day in and day out, the girls have been productive at the highest level,” coach John Reynolds said. “In an extremely difficult league, the girls went undefeated in convincing fashion. On the weekends, they dominated all invitationals they have run in. The girls put in tons of hard work over the summer and early fall to give themselves these wonderful opportunities, and have taken on all challenges with great class. They represent East Islip and run with EI Pride every day that they lace up their sneakers.”

Bethpage Turkey Drive 2020 Volunteers The Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit the Island Harvest Food Bank will take place on Friday, November 19, 2021, from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. The 13th annual food drive will include a no-contact donation car drive-through which will enable community residents to remain in their cars while volunteers remove donations from the vehicles. Long Islanders are asked to donate frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items or cash donations. These donations will go directly to Island Harvest Food Bank, which will help supply Thanksgiving meals to the more than 300,000 food-insecure Long Islanders through its distribution network of over 400 food pantries, soup kitchens, and other feeding programs on Long Island. Non-perishable food items needed include canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, boxed juices, and shelf-stable milk (please, no glass containers). The Bethpage Turkey Drive will take place at Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s headquarters located at 899 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage.

“The AutisMile provided an opportunity to showcase Main Street East Islip on behalf of a great cause,” EJ Autism Foundation founder Bea HustePetersen said. “A road mile is a bit of a rare event, but extremely competitive and exciting. It was a great opportunity to have fun

running or on the sidelines. We had competitors from as far as New York City and Washington, DC competing for bragging rights and prize money. The event was a great success and we will return next year.”

National nonprofit Wreaths Across America (WAA) is proud to announce that Jersey Mike’s Subs has made a $300,000 donation to support a matching campaign from Nov. 15 – 30, 2021, with a goal to sponsor 40,000 veterans’ wreaths for placement this National Wreaths Across America Day – Saturday, Dec. 18, 2021. State Parks Announces Hunting Schedules For 2021/2022 The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced that hunting will be permitted within specific areas of select Long Island State Parks for the upcoming hunting season. Hunting regulations in state parks are developed in cooperation with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), which establishes hunting seasons throughout the state. In addition to statewide hunting rules, special restrictions are in effect in state parks to protect visitors and to address wildlife management goals for each park. Hunters are advised to check with the state park regional office and with the local DEC wildlife management office for specific information. See the website at www.dec.ny.gov. All hunters must have a valid New York State hunting license and, to hunt waterfowl, must also be registered in the Harvest Information Program (https://www.dec. ny.gov/permits/6405.html) and have a federal migratory bird hunting stamp (“duck stamp”). Reports of rabies in deer have been rare, but hunters and other park users should

be alert to the possibility of encountering a rabid raccoon, fox or skunk. To reduce the risk of exposure, follow these guidelines: • Do not approach wildlife that acts abnormally. • Do not touch any animal found dead for unknown reasons. Hunters are advised to wear gloves and eye protection to avoid coming in contact with tissues or bodily fluids that may carry infectious disease.
