Additionally, they are holding their annual Adopt-a-Family Thanksgiving Food Drive! This project involves others to volunteer their time to gather and bag items for families in need so they can have a filling Thanksgiving. This is the perfect opportunity for families, groups and students to get involved in their community. Long Island Cares has a goal of reaching
They ask that you provide the following specific items in order to provide a Long Island family with a full Thanksgiving meal: - 4 cans of vegetables - 4 cans of fruit - 1 can of pumpkin or pie filling - 1 box/bag of stuffing - 1 box of mashed potato mix - 1 jar/can/packet of gravy - 1 can of cranberry sauce - 1 box of dessert mix (cake/cookie/ muffin) - OPTIONAL: Turkey (please put in a separate bag if you wish to donate this) Donations should be double bagged or in a reusable bag and delivered to their office located at 10 Davids Drive Hauppauge, NY 11788. All donations must be delivered no later than November 20th and must be dropped off between the hours of 8:30AM and 3:30PM Monday - Friday. These children are living in NYC through the Harlem Dowling agency, a charity helping children succeed since the 1880’s. The Christmas wishes are first written out in the children’s Letters to Santa. Then Help Mrs. Claus steps in and helps to fulfill these wishes. Since inception 9 years ago, Help Mrs. Claus has granted over 2,000 wishes, but they will not stop there! They are currently in the process of gathering gift donations for the upcoming Holiday Season. With plenty of children in need, they are still looking for volunteers and donations. Anyone looking to help can contact Jennifer Scully either on the organization’s Facebook page or by email at helpmrsclaus@gmail.com. Urgent Call For Donors New York’s blood supply has never been lower, and New York Blood Center (NYBC) is urgently calling for donors. There has been a significant decline in regular blood donors, and the region’s supply has reached critically low levels. In order to maintain a safe blood supply, a sevenday inventory of all blood types must be continually replenished. Right now, reserves are below that
minimum. October has always been the month to recover, to take a breath and know our blood supply will rebound after the tough summer months. Unfortunately, this year, that is not the case. Our region’s blood supply has never been lower. This critical blood shortage stems from decline in donor base and increased demand for blood.
We’re hoping that you will share this urgent message to encourage folks to come out to donate. That little extra action can make the difference in the lives of the patients we fight for together. Thank you for anything that you can do to help rebuild our inventory in order to serve patients in our local hospitals!

To help familiarize them with the school district and its programs, the Islip School District hosted a parent orientation for its English Language Learners at Islip High School on the evening of Oct. 22. Islip currently has students who speak 19 different languages, up from 17 last year. with 82 percent Spanishspeaking. Priscilla Zarate, the district’s ENL and world language coordinator, welcomed parents and students to the meeting. Zarate presented information on the district’s academic offerings, programs and services available to ELL students, based on New York State Department of Education regulations. Following the presentation, parents and students were invited to the cafeteria, where they could visit with different school and community informational tables. The district’s Parent Teacher Associations, Islip Public Library, Long Island Immigrant Student Advocates, APAC International Culinary Arts Academy and school nutrition representatives were available to meet with parents and answer questions. Students had the opportunity to visit different stations with books, coloring, Legos and hands-on robotics. Each student went home with a backpack filled with books and school supplies. Parents were also able to meet with ENL teachers from across the district and learn about the specifics of each building during a breakout session later in the evening. The high school’s World Language Honor Society students were on hand to work with the students in the cafeteria while parents visited with teachers in the classrooms.
