Veterans Day begins with Armistice Day Veterans Day is a byproduct of the end of World War I, when Germany and the Allied Nations signed the Treaty of Versailles, formally ceasing fighting and establishing terms of peace. On November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the signing of the treaty, the first Armistice Day events were held. Armistice Day was initially a legal holiday to honor the end of World War I only, states History.com. The United States Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance and November 11 became a national holiday starting in 1938. However, in 1954, after the country had been embroiled in both World War II and the Korean War, Congress amended the Act of 1938 by renaming the commemoration “Veterans Day” to honor veterans of all wars.

Students at East Islip’s John F. Kennedy Elementary School recently had the opportunity to attend a PTA-sponsored book fair and celebrate the joy of reading. “The smiles on the children’s faces as they

read through the many books offered, reflected how happy they were to start the year by choosing a brand new book,” said Principal Deborah Smith. “The teachers were equally excited to find new and interesting titles that they could add to their

classroom libraries. The wonder of books continues with so many topics that the children are fascinated by and literature that is capable of fostering memories that will last a lifetime.”

“The greatest benefit of marching band, on a personal basis, is the discipline of it,” said Steve Campanella, the director of Islip High School’s proud and talented marching band. “On an overall basis, I think it’s the camaraderie of everybody working together, mixing the social aspect with the musical and educational aspects.” Campanella has been the Bucs marching band director for the last 14 years, after previously serving as assistant director. When he started, enthusiasm was at a low for what was merely a pep band. Responding to the community’s desire to have an authentic marching

band, Campanella worked to enhance the quality of the program. In the beginning, it took him an entire season to teach 10 pages of drill, and now he manages to impart twice that much in a week in band camp. “They’ve made some massive leaps and bounds in those 14 years,” he said. “It has become selfsustaining. The kids understand exactly what they’ve been asked to do.” “I joined this band and it completely changed my life,” said junior Erin Quinn, a tenor saxophonist and drum major. “It made me want to pursue music as a career in college. It’s a family.”

This fall, the band has been diligently practicing, getting ready for the Newsday Marching Band Festival in October and participating in the Pursuit of Pride Competition at Malverne Senior High School. Islip’s current theme is the music of Queen, including a theatrically exciting use of bicycles. “We try to take the next step each year, and this show is a little bit more technical,” Campanella said. “What they’re doing on the field is actually quite difficult, but hopefully by the time we are finished with our season, it won’t look difficult anymore.”

New York’s blood supply has never been lower, and New York Blood Center (NYBC) is urgently calling for donors. There has been a significant decline in regular blood donors, and the region’s supply has reached critically low levels. In order to maintain a safe blood supply, a sevenday inventory of all blood types must be continually replenished. Right now, reserves are below that

minimum. October has always been the month to recover, to take a breath and know our blood supply will rebound after the tough summer months. Unfortunately, this year, that is not the case. Our region’s blood supply has never been lower. This critical blood shortage stems from decline in donor base and increased demand for blood.

We’re hoping that you will share this urgent message to encourage folks to come out to donate. That little extra action can make the difference in the lives of the patients we fight for together. Thank you for anything that you can do to help rebuild our inventory in order to serve patients in our local hospitals!

MARINA GUARD HONORED- Marina Guard Mark Schoberl was recognized for his heroism at the Town’s October Town Board meeting. Schoberl came upon a twocar motor vehicle accident in West Islip this past August minutes after it had taken place. His quick-thinking actions, securing the scene and extinguishing flames with a fire extinguisher, helped prevent a tragic situation from occurring. Just a few hours later while continuing his patrols, Mark stopped at the Sayville Marina where a patron notified he and a fellow guard, that a woman’s wallet had been left behind in an area adjacent to the bathhouse. Mark and his colleague located the owner and returned the wallet. Supervisor Carpenter and Town Board members presented Mark with a Certificate of Appreciation, at the suggestion of the wallet’s owner, who called the Supervisor’s office to express their gratitude

Town of Islip officials broke ground in Central Islip, in preparation for what will be the new location of a more than 17,000 sf state-of-theart animal shelter, complete with an on-site surgical room and double the number of viewing rooms. The new shelter will be centrally located on Carleton Ave., and will offer nearly 20% more kennels, new HVAC, separate entrances for staff and animals, ADA compliance, ample visitor parking, energy efficient lighting, administrative office space and separate entrances and exits for animal control officers. “I commend our DEC Commissioner, Martin Bellew and his predecessor, James Heil, for their foresight, and for working diligently to make this vision a reality,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “Our new animal shelter will offer animals modern comfort and care until they find their forever homes,” added Supervisor Carpenter. Construction of the shelter is expected to be completed in the fall of 2020. Islip Town Councilman John Cochrane; Councilwoman Mary Kate Mullen; Islip Planning Commissioner Ron Meyer; Deputy Commissioner Michelle Bassen; Senator Phil Boyle; DPW Commissioner Tom Owens; Deputy DEC Commissioner, Greg Hancock; Shelter Supervisor, Teri Giacalone, and members of the Trap Neuter Release program attended the groundbreaking.
