Long Island Coalition for the Homeless www.addessthehomeless.org Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was founded in 1985. Their mission is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. LICH runs a local Boutique that gives people in need a chance to come and pick out clothes and other essential items, all for free. With the help of generous people, they collect items year-round for people experiencing homelessness.

They are currently looking for volunteers who are organized, fun and dedicated to sort and display items at the Boutique. Even giving just a few hours of your time can be a huge help. Additionally, they are in need of various donations. The most needed items are baby diapers, formula and wipes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine products, plus-size clothing, school supplies (especially binders, dividers and spiral notebooks), along with non-perishable food items. They are also looking for new and gently used housewares. If you are interested in making a donation to or volunteering with the Boutique, please email boutique@addressthehomeless.org. Additionally, they are holding a Volunteer Day On Saturday, November 13th at the Boutique. This day allows anyone who is vaccinated to come down and get involved, whether it be for community service hours or not. There will be two

Strong communities are able to thrive thanks to the efforts of their residents, including those who give up their free time to volunteer with local charitable organizations. Though the impact of volunteers is often seen through the lens of the projects they help to initiate and complete, there’s no denying just how valuable

volunteers are from an economic standpoint. In its 2018 “Volunteering in America Report,” AmeriCorps, an organization dedicated to strengthening communities and fostering civic engagement through service and volunteering, reported that Americans volunteered nearly 6.9 billion hours worth an estimated $167 billion in

2017. with my Mexican culture,” says Maria Elena Venegas Banulelos, a Spanish speaking, MexicanAmerican Peace Corps volunteer who served in Jamaica. “For instance, both Mexicans and Jamaicans are very religious, we enjoy a little spice in our food, and like to dress our best when in public. Both cultures love soccer, dancing and loud music. Also, the environments are similar in the structure of the homes and agricultural products, and both are home to the most humble people.” This sentiment is shared by other volunteers as well. “My color and my accent have not affected my volunteer work negatively, instead this has allowed me to integrate well in my

community, and people even call me ‘African,’” says Aboubakar Bodi, who was born in Togo and served in Jamaica. Bringing Skills Home Peace Corps service can be an emotionally rewarding experience and an effective way to develop the skills needed to make a difference in one’s community back home. It can also be a key stepping stone in one’s career. East Islip Celebrates Return Of Homecoming With All-Day Festivities

East Islip enjoyed an allday celebration of school and community pride on Oct. 8, featuring its first high school pep rally and homecoming events since the fall of 2019. The week leading up to homecoming was spent showing off EI Pride as students and staff dressed up each day of Spirit Week, earning points to win the coveted Class Cup, a yearlong competition between the classes. On homecoming morning, the pep rally was held outside this year at Sal Ciampi Field at Boomer Esiason Stadium. The school’s varsity and JV teams were introduced and senior athletes and band members recognized. Students enjoyed “Minute to Win It” games run by the class councils and student government, including sack races and a tug of war. In light of uncertainty regarding mandates, a traditional parade through the community was not planned. However, student

government organized a mini-parade at the end of the afternoon. The march through the school campus was led by the pep band, followed by varsity, JV, East Islip Middle School, and East Islip Competition cheerleaders; several high school clubs; the PTSA; class councils, and Pee Wee football players. The parade ended on the field behind the stadium, where the community had the chance to sample five different food trucks before and during the big game. Just before dusk fell, the undefeated varsity football team took the field, bearing American flags as well as the names of the 13 U.S. military personnel killed in Afghanistan on Aug. 26 on their helmets. Once the game against Half Hollow Hills West began, East Islip took charge, racking up the touchdowns en route to a commanding 42-7 victory. Quarterback Derek Burrell completed six of eight passes for 101 yards

and a touchdown while running for 65 yards and two touchdowns, while Leo Lopez ran for 51 yards and two touchdowns. Other notable efforts included an interception for Aiden Lenox and a sack by Cooper Parkinson. During halftime, the school’s royals were announced: freshmen Julianna D’Addario and Vincent Abbatiello, sophomores Charlie Heffernan and Mary Ranzie, juniors Riley Kramer and Muhammed Abdullah, and seniors Bill Ahmad and Jenna Scandale. “The week was a huge success,” student government advisers Kate Boucher and Bridget Lopiccolo said. “Everyone enjoyed the events and pep rally. We have many great ideas planned and are looking forward to a spring pep rally to celebrate the senior athletes who participate in winter and spring sports.”

Great South Bay Shellfish Cultivation Facility produces high quality clams, oysters,

and kelp for growers from here on the east coast in the Town of Islip to distributors throughout the country,” said Councilman O’Connor. Councilman O’Connor continued, “most importantly, the Great South Bay Shellfish Cultivation Facility along with the Bay Bottom Aquaculture Leasing Program is an important step to saving the Great South Bay. The locally grown Kelp filters out harmful nitrates, which are produced by cesspools, that pollute the Great South Bay. In conjunction, each one of the thousands of clams from the Bay Bottom Leasing program filters out 30 to 50 gallons of

water daily. This is a clean, sustainable, and natural process to remove toxic elements from our natural water sources. Islip Students Hit High Notes The Islip Public Schools Department of Fine and Performing Arts and Islip High School are proud to announce the selection of three students as alternates to the New York State School Music Association All-State Honor Ensembles and eight students who will perform with the Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association All-County Vocal Jazz Ensemble. NYSSMA studentmusicians Hannah Evans (flute), Maggie Frazer (voice) and Isabella Green were selected for the All-State Festival based on their performance in the NYSSMA Solo and Ensemble Festival. All-County Vocal Jazz student-musicians Ella Beiser (alto), Lucas Bohr

(bass), Richie Castronova (bass), Leah Cyran (alto), Maggie Frazer (alto), Madelynn Lang (alto), Daniel Rubinson (bass) and Jordyn Zurbaran (alto) were selected through an audition process that took place last spring among hundreds of applicants throughout Suffolk County and New York State. Students prepare for the festivals with the assistance of their school music teachers and then participate in a series of rehearsals that conclude with a concert. The students will have the opportunity to work and perform under the leadership of highly skilled directors from the college music community and the professional music industry. All-State

performances will be held during the NYSSMA Winter Conference in Rochester, on Dec. 2-5. The All-County Vocal Jazz Ensemble will perform at the SCMEA Day of Jazz, held on Nov. 6, at East Islip High School. American vocalist and director of Elvanelle music, Kimberly Hawkey, will work with and conduct participants at the Day of Jazz. “We are extremely thrilled to have these remarkable student musicians representing Islip Schools in the AllState and All-County festivals. Legge Named Director Of Special Education

The East Islip School District recently named Krista Legge as director of special education. She previously served as the Rocky Point School District’s assistant director of pupil personnel services. Legge’s more than 15 years of special education experience included working as a special education teacher, behavior specialist and regional KRISTA LEGGE special education trainer for Suffolk County. At meetings people share thyroid cancer information, their experiences, and insights on how they are coping with thyroid cancer. The support group is free and open to any and all survivors and their families and friends.
