HUNDREDS TURN OUT - More than 350 runners and walkers took to the streets of Islip for a 5 Mile Run/5K Walk to raise money for the Islip Breast Cancer Coalition. Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter emceed the award ceremony, which included presenting a 1st Place Overall Medal to Town employee Mark Chasanoff, as well as to medal winner Town Councilwoman Mary Kate Mullen, the first female to cross the finish line. The event was sponsored by “Hope Runs Here,” and hosted by the Town of Islip and the Islip Breast Cancer Coalition. Over 75 volunteers turned out to ensure the event ran smoothly. “Today’s run/walk enables the Islip Breast Cancer Coalition to continue to provide the valuable support and outreach to those whose lives have been affected by breast cancer,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

Councilman Cochrane gave his appreciation for all the emergency service men and women who continue to keep our residents safe year round. The Councilman, a retired USN Captain, also shared support for the community at the East Islip Fair, meeting with American Legion 4S Post Commander, veteran

East Islip High School seniors Caroline Meehan and Jessica Montijo were recently named Award of Merit recipients as part of the Long Island Scholar Artist program. Sponsored by the Long Island Arts Alliance, this annual program recognizes students who excel academically and in the arts. Meehan earned the designation in the visual arts category, Montijo in media arts. Both students were honored at a Sept. 11 induction ceremony at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts. “These two are phenomenal and inspiring to be around,” said art teacher Daniel Figliozzi. “It has been a pleasure to work with them these last three years and I’m excited to continuing working with them this year. Watching them grow as artists and as individuals has been a wonderful experience for me, as their teacher and their friend. They both worked tirelessly last year to create amazing bodies of artwork that showcase their unique conceptual visions and strong technical abilities. My fellow teacher Heather Toomey has been a great mentor to them and continues to help our advanced placement students every year. We couldn’t do it without her.” “We are so honored that Jessica and Caroline were recognized for these prestigious awards,” said Dr. Robert J. The Charity of the Month for October is: The Cemetery of Lost Souls (lostsoulsli.com) Benefitting Melissa’s Wish The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. E v e r y bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares. This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! The remaining events will run on October 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event. This homegrown haunt has been up and running for a few weeks so far this year and visitors have only good things to say! Below are some recent reviews:

Honor Society kicks off the year East Islip High School’s National Foreign Language Honor Society recently held its first general meeting of the school year, with 130 out of 193 club members in attendance. This marks the largest ever group of student members for East Islip’s NFLHS. During the meeting, students and co-advisers Giuseppe Costa and Betty Muller discussed additions to Foreign Language Week schedule as well as scholarship fundraiser ideas including an open mic night where teachers and students could perform together and share their talents to build community. “We are very excited to be able to have such a large group this year and look forward to an amazing year with all of the students at East Islip High School,” said Muller. ROST NAMED NATIONAL MERIT SEMIFINALIST - East Islip High School senior William Rost was named a National Merit Semifinalist in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program, based on his exceptional results in the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Rost was among only 16,000 students nationwide who were recognized as Semifinalists out of 1.5 million who applied. ‘Brianna’s Law’ has passed the State of New York Assembly, where the law will require ALL who operate a mechanically propelled vessel on navigable waters, to carry a BOATING SAFETY CERTIFICATE. This law will be implemented in five annual phases beginning January 1, 2020. The required age will change each year and in complete affect for all boaters by January 1, 2024. Don’t delay… get your certificate now! This is the time to register for the AMERICA’S BOATING COURSE, offered by The Great South Bay Power Squadron of America’s Boating Club. This course will be run on Saturdays, October 26, November 16 and 23, 2019, from 9:30am to 12:30pm at the East Islip Public Library, 381 East Main Street, East Islip, NY 11730.
America’s Boating Course educational topics include: ·Introduction to Boating ·Boating Law ·Boat Safety Equipment ·Safe Boating Navigation ·Boating Problems · Trailering, Storing and Protecting Your boat Many Boat Insurance companies offer discounts on boating insurance to boaters who successfully complete this course. This basic boating knowledge course will give you the education required to obtain a state “Boat Operator Certificate.” This is an eight hour course followed by an exam – all written on a 7th grade reading level. Upon completing the exam at the end of the course, each student will receive a personalized Laminated Sail and Power Boating Certificate. The Power Boating
Certificate never expires and it covers all types of Power Boats including Personal Water Crafts. Registration for the course is required in advance of the course and subject to availabilities.
