The Charity of the Month for October is

Long Island Coalition for the Homeless www.addessthehomeless.org Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was founded in 1985. Their mission is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. LICH runs a local Boutique that gives people in need a chance to come and pick out clothes and other essential items, all for free. With the help of generous people, they collect items year-round for people experiencing homelessness.

They are currently looking for volunteers who are organized, fun and dedicated to sort and display items at the Boutique. Even giving just a few hours of your time can be a huge help. Additionally, they are in need of various donations. The most needed items are baby diapers, formula and wipes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine products, plus-size clothing, school supplies (especially binders, dividers and spiral notebooks), along with non-perishable food items. They are also looking for new and gently used housewares.

The Community Garden program also incorporates the preparation of healthy meals made from organic ingredients. Members also learn to cook and enjoy various new dishes. The garden planning and planting happens from JanuaryNovember, so now is a great time to learn and get involved before you can get busy planning and planting! Garden Club. Their Garden Club holds meetings, where members decide what to plant and grow, while learning about various aspects of organic gardening. Anyone who is interested in gardening is welcomed by this Garden Club to volunteer with them. Volunteers can attend to the basic gardening by helping to weed, till, harvest and more, build vertical and raised beds and more.

Kiersten Galli is a Keep Islip Clean volunteer on a mission. She has done an impressive amount of volunteer work to earn a Girl Scout Silver Award and her community is the better for it. Through a linked series of projects, Kiersten showed her commitment to a clean environment, as she completed recycling, education and litter cleanup activities, mainly in her home town of Islip Terrace. An ambitious recycling project involved collecting and redeeming 2809 cans/ bottles, in just two weeks. This work resulted in a much needed donation to KIC of 1126 garbage bags and 1572 disposable gloves. She bought these supplies with $350 earned through recycling, several donations and a $50 coupon from Home Depot in Central Islip. In addition to her recycling work, Kiersten created a brochure packed with information about litter, recycling and KIC. She presented this

information to fellow Girl Scouts, and KIC will use the brochure for educational outreach. Participating in numerous litter cleanups added the final touch to her good work. “Kiersten is a remarkable young lady,” said KIC

Executive Director Nancy Cochran. “She gave a tremendous amount of time and effort to improve her community and benefit a local not-for-profit organization. I’m grateful for her good deeds.”

Bus safety is a main priority of the Islip School District. In making sure that students make a secure journey from home to the classroom, all kindergarten students received mandated bus safety training at the start

of the school year. After each class loaded a bus, Suffolk Transportation Services drivers discussed the rules of riding and disembarking. Driver Marcia Thompson explained that bus safety begins at the bus stop

where students should remain alert and at a safe distance from the road. The students also learned that they must always wear a mask, should respect peers and should sit until it is their time to unload.

PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed Long Island initiative has exceeded its goal, raising the equivalent of 21,944 meals – nearly a thousand more meals than its 21,000-meal objective. Three months and six food drives yielded 10,106 pounds of food and supplies, plus nearly $2,200 in cash donations, and online donations totaling more than $4,000. Representatives from Island Harvest Food Bank, small business owners, community volunteers and Girl Scouts who contributed to the initiative, the company announced the results of its Power to Feed Long Island initiative at the food bank’s Melville warehouse. “We are proud that our community came out to support each other and fight hunger through our Power to Feed Long Island food drives,” said Daniel Eichhorn, president and COO of PSEG Long Island, and Island Harvest Food Bank board member. “We set a lofty goal in July, and Long Islanders showed up in force with shopping carts and trunks full of food and supplies to meet the challenge. We crushed our goal because helping each other is something Long Islanders do, and it’s something our employees do. We’re glad we were able

to create the venue to make it happen.” “We are incredibly grateful to PSEG Long Island for their longstanding commitment to addressing the issue of hunger and food insecurity on Long Island,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO, Island Harvest Food Bank. “Thanks to their concern and generosity and the success of the Power to Feed Long Island initiative, countless Long Islanders struggling to feed their families will be able to rest easier knowing that they will have access to something as basic as food.” Power to Feed Long Island was created to restock the shelves at Island Harvest to enable the nonprofit to provide community members in need with nutritious food, personal care items, baby essentials and pet supplies. Food drive events were held at six supermarkets ─ King Kullen in Garden City Park/New Hyde Park and Shirley; Stew Leonard’s in East Meadow; and Stop & Shop in Huntington Station, Islandia and Massapequa ─ from July through September, when vacations cause a decrease in donations, and collection drives are not top of mind. It is also a time when children out of school are not receiving daily free or

reduced-cost breakfast and lunch, which puts a heavier burden on their families. “Stop & Shop is proud to continue its committed support of the efforts of Island Harvest to address food insecurity across Nassau and Suffolk counties,” said Stefanie Shuman, community relations manager, Stop & Shop. “Power to Feed Long Island allowed our customers to take part in food drives held at Stop & Shop stores and help their neighbors in need. It’s important that we all come together during these very difficult times,” she added. Along with the economic hardships caused by the pandemic, there is a significant strain on the supplemental food supply chain. The collection drives continued through September, Hunger Action Month. More than a dozen PSEG Long Island employees participated in the food drives as Power to Feed Long Island ambassadors. They agree that safely getting back out into the community to help their neighbors was a rewarding experience. Racing To Help Save The Great South Bay

The 2021 Mayor’s Cup Charity Regatta & Soirée took place on Saturday, September 18 on the Great South Bay followed immediately by what is quickly becoming an annual favorite celebration at the Long Island Yacht Club benefiting local environmental non-profit Save The Great South Bay. One of the largest sailboat races on the Great South Bay, the Mayor’s Cup is organized by the Great South Bay Yacht Racing Association in association with the South Bay Cruising Club. Returning Race Committee Chair John Davis oversaw the 7.8 nautical mile course which proved a tough battle for the skippers and their crews. The light and variable winds, that changed direction multiple times throughout the race, made for very difficult conditions to keep the boats sailing. A Multi-Class Regatta Captain Rick Latorre and his crew aboard Dark Star won line honors and came in first place in the Spinnaker Division. Eric Winberry and crew aboard Aleboat came in second place. The Non Spinning Division was won by a great sailing performance by Gary Sebouhian and his crew aboard S/V Pandemonium. Second place boat was Merry Ann and crew followed by Ed Anderson’s boat At Last. The Cruising Division was won by Chris Demmarco who sailed single handedly and was the only boat in his division to complete the race in such light wind. The Multi hull boats were sailing all over the racecourse looking for wind and was won by

Kim Schaefer and his crew on the Trimaran Trillium. Their competition was close behind aboard the Trimaran Getting There. There were a total of 15 boats racing in the four classes. The action was beautifully captured by Mike Busch of Great South Bay Images and Rich Labella of RJ Labella Photography and is available to view at www. greatsouthbay.org. Then The Celebration…. The Soirée Directly following the Regatta and set to a stunning background with views to the Robert Moses Bridge, this year’s celebration was presented by York Analytical Laboratories at the Long Island Yacht Club. Celebrants were treated to live music by the ever-popular No Request Band along with tasty seafood delights served up by Bill and Maureen Zeller of Captree Clam. Under beautiful blue skies, Chuck Westfall of Thatch Island Oysters shucked hundreds of fresh Great South Bay oysters and guests dined on tasty treats from Coastal Kitchen, Mary Carroll’s, Ristorante Gemelli, Village Meat Market and Southside Fish and Clam. As they raised funds to support the organization’s three core programs, guests enjoyed an exclusive tasting of beautifully aged armagnacs and cognac with local importer Larry Reiter of Columbus Wine and Spirits. Others had their fortunes told by the Collective Consciousness of Oakdale. The Yacht Club’s grounds were decorated with a wide selection of native trees,

bushes and plants donated by Long Island Natives. The plants were repurposed to build a native garden in Amityville’s Nautical Park after the event. Remembering the Past, Celebrating the Present The 2021 Mayor’s Cup Charity Regatta was dedicated in memory of former Babylon Village Mayor Ralph A. Scordino who sadly passed away in October 2020. Mayor Scordino was a longtime supporter of the Mayor’s Cup Charity Regatta and an avid supporter of Save The Great South Bay, 501(c)3. Current Babylon Village Mayor Mary Adams spoke of her predecessor’s love of the Bay and commitment to the environment. Congratulations to grand prize winner Jay Price who won the 9’ 6” Paddleboard donated by Karen Marvin of South Shore Paddle Board. BOOK CLUB HOSTS “SEA” SURVIVOR ALDRIDGE - Led by library media specialist Melanie Ash, the East Islip Middle School Book Club hosted a visit with author John Aldridge on Oct. 6. Aldridge’s 2017 book, “A Speck in the Sea,” details the night he fell off his lobster boat in Montauk and survived over 12 hours in the water before being rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard. The Book Club members asked questions specific to the book and Aldridge’s experience in the water. At the end, the students had a chance to take photos with Aldridge and get their books signed.
