East Islip Volleyball Teams Support Breast Cancer Awareness

East Islip High School’s varsity and junior varsity girls volleyball teams hosted a Rocking the Road for a Cure breast cancer awareness event at their matches on Oct. 7.

RTRFAC founder Dawn Dimilia attended the event and shared her personal story as a two-time breast cancer

survivor. She also imparted valuable information to the East Islip students and audience members about the importance of early detection and getting regular exams.

“Thanks to everyone in attendance and to those who supported RTRFAC by purchasing raffle tickets and merchandise,” JV

coach Diane Wahrenburg said. “Dawn and all of the volunteers for her organization provide valuable services for those going through surgeries and treatments on Long Island and in Queens. All in all, it was a fantastic event and congratulations to both teams for winning their matches as well.”

The Long Island Dahlia Society will host its monthly meeting on Thursday, October 20th, 2022 at 6:30 PM at the East

Storm season is here in New York, is your home ready to withstand the elements this year? There are a lot of precautions homeowners can take to make sure their homes are ready to combat the storms that come our way. The most important aspect of your home that you need to check is your roof. Make sure that all shingles and components on your roof are not compromised. This means checking the shingles to see if any are loose or if any are blown off. If you do see that your roof needs work you must get this fixed as soon as possible.

The strong rains and winds from storms will cause leaks in your roof which will lead to the structure of your home rotting and cause leaks that may make their way into your home. The next aspect of your home you should check is your gutters. Make sure they are cleaned, and water is able to fill up and be diverted away from your house. Make sure that the downspouts to your gutters are pointed away from the foundation of your home and are clear for water to flow through easily. If gutters are not able to keep a constant flow of water away from your home the facia that the gutters are attached to will rot and your gutters may fall off due to the excessive water that is filling them and the weakened fascia that is caused by the excessive water damage. Finally, make sure that all of your windows and doors are able to lock & are air-tight so no water is able to infiltrate through these openings.

You may also want to check your window wells if you have them. Make sure that the soil is loose and able to absorb water so no flooding can occur. These are just a few ways homeowners can prepare for storm season. If you need to upgrade or replace any part of your home’s exterior call UNIFIED.

On The 80th Anniversary Of The Sherman Tank, The Museum Of American Armor Seeks Those Who Crewed These Legendary Vehicles

On the 80th anniversary of the iconic Sherman tank that spearheaded America’s liberation of Europe during

World War II, the Museum of American Armor is seeking to honor those veterans who crewed these legendary

vehicles along their families.

The Armor Museum has put out an “All Points Bulletin” for Sherman tank

families to join the Armor Museum in observing the milestone anniversary on Thursday, November 10th at 12 Noon, on the eve of Veterans Day 2022.

“Sadly, we recognize that many of the Sherman tank crews are gone but their legacy is lasting. The invitation is out to all surviving Sherman tankers but we are also asking the families of Sherman veterans to join us in ceremonies that mark the 80th anniversary of when this iconic tank was introduced into combat,” stated Kevin Carroll, the Armor Museum’s Community Affairs Director.

Armor Museum’s founder and president Lawrence Kadish stated, “The Armor Museum continues to offer a powerful presentation that keeps alive the legacy of our nation’s military and the gift of freedom they have given all of us. The Sherman tank is an important part of that

story and so we are asking tanker veterans or their survivors to come forward and help us preserve their legacy.”

In recognition of its considerable importance, the Armor Museum’s acquisition of a Sherman tank was one of the first actions undertaken by Mr. Kadish when he undertook the creation of the museum.

“You can’t effectively tell the story of American courage during World War II without this particular tank on operational display,” observed Mr. Kadish.

Some 50,000 Sherman tanks were built by nearly a dozen different manufacturers during World War II, making them available to the Allies as well as American forces fighting in Europe and the Pacific. While not as well armed as its German opponents, the Sherman proved to be reliable, relatively fast, and

produced in great numbers. As combat evolved during the conflict American tankers changes their tactics to confront and defeat the enemy’s superior armor.

Michael Sapraicone, Senior Armor Museum Trustee said, “This museum is a unique commitment by public and private sectors to preserve and present a seminal chapter in the history of our world that is still defining current events around the globe. But to put that in perspective, we need to hear from our Sherman veterans and their families as we pay tribute to a weapon that was manned by brave Americans nearly a century ago.”

The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services

Helen Keller Services (HKS), a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation, works with thousands of individuals who are blind, have low vision, are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss to live, work and thrive in their community of choice.

The Helen Keller National Center (HKNC), which is located in Port Washington, is the only comprehensive national program that provides information, referral, support and training exclusively to youths and adults who have combined vision and hearing loss. The Center also supports the families and professionals who work with the DeafBlind community.

One of the services the organization runs is the HKSB Health and Wellness Program, which provides free physical health activities and mental wellness initiatives to individuals throughout the New York metropolitan area who are blind or DeafBlind. Some of the offerings are individualized and group dance movement therapy, yoga and/or pilates instruction, nutrition education, creative arts therapy, gardening and workshops on various topics related to health and wellness.

“The program offers dance and movement therapy sessions to

promote emotional and psychological release through creative

movement expression,” says Janine Markey, a dance/movement therapist for HKS. “Yoga sessions encourage the use of mindfulness practices. Mental health support groups are facilitated by clinical staff members to provide a safe outlet for the participants thoughts and feelings.”

Additionally, the program offers nutrition and fitness workshops focusing on healthy lifestyle choices. If you would like more information about this program, please visit www. helenkeller.org.

Don’t forget, this entire month is designated as National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities past and present and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices. It’s important to accept people of all abilities, from all walks of life, and this non-profit does just that.

Tristan Hearth Earns All-National Honors

East Islip High School senior Tristan Hearth was recently selected for the National Association for Music Education’s AllNational Mixed Choir, Hearth was one of only 55 New York State students selected for this prestigious honor.

Representing the highest performing high school musicians in the United States, Hearth and the other members of the NAfME AllNational Honor Ensembles will perform Nov. 3-6 in National Harbor, Maryland under the leadership of top conductors in the field of music education.

“It’s a huge honor,” Hearth said. “I feel like my work has really paid off. I’ve always loved music since I was very young, and I’m really happy to be able to participate with other people who really love music. Achieving All-State was part of the reason why

Local Islip Fire Departments Honored With National ASPCA Award For Heroic Act

On the morning of July 17, 2022, firefighters from Islip Terrace Fire Department, Islip Fire Department, and East Islip Fire Department bravely rescued three trapped dogs, two Siberian Huskies and an Alaskan Malamute, and a 19-year-old woman from a house fire in Long Island. Discovering two of the dogs were unconscious and barely breathing, the firefighters immediately began chest compressions and cooled off the dogs with a fire hose. The dramatic rescue was captured on video, inspiring people nationwide. The rescued woman and all three dogs survived their ordeal thanks to these heroic firefighters’ skill and quick thinking. The collaborating departments— who serve more than 14,000 residents combined—acted not only on their duty but also on their deep compassion for people and animals in need. Christian Seifert Appointed As East Islip’s World Languages Coordinator

Christian Seifert has been appointed as the East Islip School District’s world languages coordinator. He also remains an assistant principal at East Islip Middle School. Seifert replaces Dr. Robert J. Wottawa II in this position; Wottawa remains East Islip’s director of art and music.

Seifert has served as an assistant principal for East Islip for the past 14 years, both at the middle school and at East Islip High School. Prior to coming to East Islip, he worked as a New York City high school assistant principal and a New York City middle school teacher. In 2013, Seifert was honored as an Administrator of the Year

by the Western Suffolk Counselors’ Association.

A Melville resident, Seifert earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in government and politics from St. John’s University, his school

building administration certification from Queens College and his school district administration certification from St. Joseph’s College.

“The study of world languages deepens your connections to people around the globe and expands your perspective,” Seifert said.

“Opportunities in all facets of life and business present themselves daily that otherwise never would when you are able to speak another language. You become another person when you achieve fluency. In addition, more than being able to speak another language you are able to think in other ways.”

Have you reviewed your insurance coverage this year? Within the past five years?
