On Thursday, Oct. 28th, the Historical Society of Islip Hamlet hosts author Amy Folk and her presentation on her book “Murder on Long Island”. In 1854 Cutchogue a local farmer and his wife - James and Frances Wickham were found murdered in their home, butchered with on ax. Blame for the murder fell on one of

their farm hands, Irish immigrant Nicholas Behan, who had been fired. The murder not only shocked and horrified the local community but also throughout the northeast of the US. Details were eventually forgotten. Come learn what really happened in Cutchogue in 1854! The program will be held

Over time, homelessness has continued to become a growing community challenging, through deinstitutionalization, national de-funding of safety net programs in the 1980s, the war on drugs, housing market crashes, recessions, natural disasters and most significantly (as the number one cause of homelessness on Long Island and nation-wide) the extremely high costs of housing and other expenses to live on Long Island, amongst other things. The mission of LICH is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The majority of people experiencing homelessness on Long Island are families that cannot afford rent or cannot find rental units quickly enough in a high cost and low availability rental market. There is also a significant local homeless population of aging single adults and adult couples that were living on fixed incomes and could no longer afford rent. While many of us could never imagine being homeless for even a single night, for both homeless families and homeless aging adults on Long Island, most remain homeless in a shelter for over six months on average,

housing. LICH has expanded their services. These services include street outreach, housing navigation, system data management and outcomes tracking. All of those are part of what has become known as the local “Coordinated Entry System”. Coordinated Entry is a personcentered, housing-focused approach to streamline access to housing and services, while prioritizing those who have been homeless the longest and those who are the most in need of housing and support. In 2020, LICH assisted over 3,000 Long Islanders with food and toiletries and connected approximately 200 households to permanent housing. Next month from November 14-November 21 it will be Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week, let’s join together and help those in need. Islip Church Held Food Drive, Kids Learned Joy Of Giving Back

They worked hard while bringing joy, energy and enthusiasm. The East Islip Girl Scout Troop #2425, together with other kids, James Pearsall, Breanna Questel, Reyna Boyd and twins Thomas and Lynnea Martinez, joined adults to sort, pack and collect food donations for God’s Provision.

Thousands of donations came from both parishioners and nonparishioners alike. There were even people who drove down the street, looked to see what was being done, stopped to talk to the organizers and ran to the supermarket to make donations. All the kids REALLY got

into the spirit and worked hard by sorting, packing, collecting and waving and showing signs to draw people in! The next food drive at St. Mark’s Episcopal in Islip is scheduled for Saturday, November 6 from 9AM to 1PM.

Operation SPLASH is a nonprofit organization founded in 1990 with the goal of cleaning up and preserving Long Island’s south shore bays, beaches, and salt marshes. Since then, the organization has grown from one caring person to several thousand members across seven chapters dotted along Long Island’s South Shore. SPLASH’s seven cleanup boats run from March through November and are fully operated by volunteer captains and crew members. Over the past three decades, volunteers have retrieved more than 3,000,000 pounds of litter, marine debris, and navigational hazards from the south shore. Most of what is pulled from the water comes from landbased sources — through storm drains and from storms blowing debris into the water. In efforts to reduce the impact of storm drainsourced marine debris, Operation SPLASH designed and currently maintains the Mill Basin Debris Trap and advocated for other environmental legislation in New York State.

Beyond collecting marine debris, Operation SPLASH has also made tremendous headway in stemming the awful tide of sewage being dumped in our bays and the toxic pollution entering our waters through stormwater runoff. SPLASH crews actively monitor and identify pollutants, as well as their sources. To reduce the flow of toxins and trash into the bays, SPLASH has collaborated on the funding and installation of more than 4,000 street storm drain inserts in Nassau County. Operation SPLASH also offers STEM-based education programs to educate students throughout Nassau County about the importance of Long Island’s south shore bays and the challenges that they face. Students from elementary school through

college have the opportunity to learn through hands-on programming that goes beyond the classroom to include boat tours and local excursions. With the leadership of talented and environmentally passionate marine tradespeople, educators and business owners, Operation SPLASH has remained focused on its mission and produces extraordinary results. SPLASH volunteers work hard to protect and preserve the South Shore bays and salt marshes, along with the wildlife, fish, and fowl that call them home. The ultimate goal is to maintain these precious ecosystems through cleanup and outreach efforts for future Long Islanders to respectfully enjoy for generations to come. Dive In & Donate To Last Hope Tom Collings of Bellmore is swimming 9 miles to mark his 70th birthday. On Monday, October 11 (Columbus Day) beginning at 7:00am, if tides and weather permit. If not, the K-9 Mile Swim will be rescheduled. The Swim will end any time from 3:00 pm and 6:30 pm depending on water conditions. We hope to have Last Hope dogs as cheerleaders at the start of Tom’s swim- contingent on the dogs’ adopters being early risers. The event will take place at from Cold Spring Harbor to Lloyd Harbor and back, starting and ending at boat basin by Billy Joel Town of Huntington Park. Tom will be accompanied by 2 friends paddling kayaks.-

Andrew Pannullo, Tom’s massage therapist and Dr. David Komatsu, professor of medicine and martial arts teacher at Stony Brook University. Tom is a wellness advocate and dog lover. He recently lost his rescued dog Rosy to old age. Tom hopes his milestone birthday swim will promote pet adoptions and wellness along with demonstrating the importance of a healthy lifestyle for people, including his many martial arts, tai chi and Zen students. Tom is asking people to sponsor his birthday milestone swim with a monetary pledge to Last Hope Animal Rescue in Wantagh to support Last

Hope’s veterinary care and adoptions. Tom has spent his life helping people improve their health and mental outlook. Many of Last Hope’s dogs and cats are not rescued from

rough situations until they are older, or even seniors. Their wellness is a concern. By providing thorough vet care for our mature pets including dentals, lab work, x-rays and other procedures when necessary, Last Hope strives to place them in loving homes where they will thrive for years to come. Monetary pledges of any size are appreciated. Donation suggestions: $70 for Tom’s 70th birthday, $40 for Last Hope’s 40th anniversary, a dollar amount per mile in the K-9 Mile Swim such as $9, $18, $27.
