The International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) kicked off in midSeptember and Keep Islip Clean is ready to support and supply volunteers in this unique environmental project. As the name suggests, the ICC is a global initiative designed to collect information on the trash removed during waterway cleanups. It is an initiative

of the Ocean Conservancy in Washington, which uses the data to track international marine pollution trends. An ICC cleanup requires attention to the details of trash found near beaches, streams and wetlands, but it is not a difficult task. Keep Islip Clean will provide instructions for data collection along with all necessary supplies.

During National Preparedness Month, this September, PSEG Long Island encourages its customers to take the necessary steps to safeguard their families, homes and businesses. Emergencies can happen at any time and preparing ahead of time helps keep everyone safe. PSEG Long Island reminds customers to “Prepare to Protect” yourself and those around you. “Safety is and has always been our top priority for our customers and employees,” said Daniel Eichhorn, president and COO of PSEG Long Island. “To help spread the word about the importance of being prepared, PSEG Long Island partners with groups like the United Way and Sesame Workshop. Taking the time to prepare and having a plan limits the negative impact of an emergency. Be prepared, not scared” PSEG Long Island’s ongoing system improvements and enhancements to the grid help provide electric reliability to Long Island and the Rockaways throughout the year. Since last August, PSEG Long Island has incorporated numerous enhancements and upgrades to the electric grid, its systems and its storm processes, including its contingency procedures.

Here’s how customers can prepare for a severe storm and other emergencies: Ensure you have a battery-powered radio and fresh batteries. Check your supply of flashlights, blankets, nonperishable food and bottled water. Create an emergency communications plan. Develop an evacuation plan. Charge your cell phones, tablets and other mobile devices. Make sure to have cash available. Banks may be closed or inaccessible after a storm. Fill up your vehicle’s fuel tank. Bring in unsecured objects and furniture from patios and balconies. Compile a list of emergency phone numbers, including PSEG Long Island’s 24-hour Electric Service number: 1-800-490-0075. Discuss storm and lightning safety with your family. PSEG Long Island cautions that metallic balloons can be hazardous PSEG Long Island is reminding customers that balloons released into the air can become entangled in overhead electric equipment and cause a host of problems. “Safety is PSEG Long Island’s No. 1 priority. That’s why we’re cautioning customers to please hold onto their metallic balloons,” said John O’Connell, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations. “Though

they’re festive, fun and look nice, we want the public to be aware that metallic balloons also conduct electricity. If they get loose and come into contact with a power line or other electrical equipment, that could lead to power outages, fire and, possibly, injuries.” To mitigate these risks, PSEG Long Island encourages the public to follow these safety guidelines: • Metallic balloons

and other decorations should be kept clear of overhead power lines and equipment, and never purposely released into the air. • All balloons with helium should be secured to weights that prevent them from floating away. • To properly dispose of a Mylar balloon, safely puncture it in several places to release the helium, and discard it in the trash. • NEVER touch a power line. Do not attempt to

retrieve a balloon, toy or anything caught in an overhead power line. Report it by contacting PSEG Long Island at 800-
