Potential Indicators of Roof Trouble

• Light: Homeowners with attics in their homes can inspect the ceilings inside the attic for signs of holes or leaks. Light peering through the top of the house indicates a hole or leak, as does stains or streaks on the ceiling. • Worn shingles: Shingles should lie ﬂat against the roof, so any

that appear to be buckling or turning up are damaged and in need of repair. A single damaged shingle does not require a full roof replacement, but inspect all the shingles nonetheless. Another indicator of shingle problems can be found when cleaning downspouts or gutters. If the gutters and downspouts contain lots of shingle granules, the roof may soon need to be replaced. • Moss: Moss on a rooftop may give a home character, but that added character is costly. Shady areas of a roof can be susceptible to the growth of moss and fungi because moisture can be trapped in such areas. If possible, remove moss or fungi from a roof with a stiff brush or hire a professional to do the job instead. Moss may come back even after brushing it off, so homeowners should

keep an eye on areas of their roofs that get little sunlight. In addition, trapped moisture can be very harmful to a roof, so it may be wise to exercise caution and have roofs with mold or fungi growths inspected. • Age: Another indicator of roof trouble may be the age of the roof. Even if there are no visible signs of damage, homeowners whose roofs have some years under their belt may want to consider replacing them. Asphalt shingle roofs typically have life expectancies of 20 to 25 years, while roofs installed over existing layers of shingles may need to be replaced after 20 years. Recognizing minor roof damage before it escalates into a larger problem can save homeowners substantial amounts of money.

DIY Projects That Can Conserve Energy Around The House Home renovation projects can pay numerous dividends. Renovations can have a positive effect on resale value, make homes more livable for residents and, in some ways, make homes more affordable. Renovation projects that aim to conserve energy can save homeowners substantial amounts of money. Such projects don’t often require considerable effort or even sizable financial investments, which can make homeowners skeptical as to just how much they can save after completing the project. But the scale of a project may have little to do with how much homeowners will save. For example, the U.S. Department of Energy notes that a relatively effortless task like turning back a thermostat between 7° and 10° F for eight hours per day can save homeowners as much as $83 per year. A more labor-intensive task like planting shade trees saves homeowners an average of between $35 and $119 per year. When looking for ways to conserve energy around the house and save money, homeowners need not necessarily commit to expensive projects. The DOE notes that the following are some energy-saving projects and details what homeowners can expect to save after completing them. While each individual project may not result in jaw-dropping savings, homeowners who follow many of these recommendations may end up saving more than $1,000 per year.

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.

To accomplish their mission, they focus on prevention, research, education, services, their Lend a Helping Hand program and awareness. WIBCC has remained open throughout the pandemic and are truly here to serve our community. This coalition serves all of Long Island, not just West Islip. As like many other non-profit organizations, WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a fatherson social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www. johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the

Next month they will present Pink Flags of October, a month-long event to honor and remember those affected by Breast Cancer. Hundreds of pink flags will be placed at the entrance of Good Samaritan Hospital. You have the opportunity to purchase a ribbon in honor of or in memory of someone whose life has been affected by Breast Cancer. These ribbons will be tied to the flags and together the flags and ribbons will fly for the entire month of October. On Sunday, September 27 from 12-2PM at The Cancer Institute (111 Beach Drive in West Islip), there will be a ceremony to celebrate this month-long event, which will include health information, light refreshments and more. If you purchase a ribbon, you can attend the event and place the name of whom it is in honor of or in memory of right on the ribbon itself. If you cannot attend, it will be placed for you. Novice gardeners may not know where to begin in regards to which tools they need. The following are eight items that can serve as a solid foundation for beginning gardeners.

“Essential Drive for Seniors” As part of United Way of Long Island’s response to the community needs that emerged from COVID-19, the organization hosted an Essentials Drive for Seniors, chaired by Pat Guidice, Business Manager of IBEW Local 1049. The drive launched on Friday, September 11 in recognition of the National Day of Service, in which Americans are called to

volunteer in their local communities. The Essentials Drive for Seniors provides an opportunity for Long Islanders to come together and give back to senior citizens, many of whom are still vulnerable to the coronavirus. While social distancing protects the health of older adults, it also severs ties to critical resources, including

access to basic but critical household, sanitization, toiletry and PPE items. International Coastal Cleanup The 35th Annual International Coastal Cleanup is now underway and Keep Islip Clean (KIC) is recruiting volunteer teams to both remove and collect data on litter found along shorelines. This global event is an initiative of the Ocean Conservancy, which takes the data they receive from many countries to track pollution trends and seek solutions to the worsening problem of worldwide marine litter. KIC works in partnership with the Northeast Chapter of the American Littoral Society (ALS) on this ambitious project. As the International Coastal Cleanup sponsor

for New York State, ALS provides information and data collection cards to participating groups. Nearly 200 KIC supporters volunteered last year to contribute data from Islip Township waterways. Cleanup areas extend beyond the shoreline beaches from West Islip through Bayport to include streams, wetland borders and other waterway areas throughout Islip. There are several important differences this year, mainly related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The time frame for cleanup projects may now take place through December instead of September only, as in past years. Social

distancing guidelines must be strictly followed and people with any risk factors making them vulnerable to the virus are advised to skip participating this year. The ICC is an opportunity for people of all ages to contribute to an important environmental project. It is also an outdoor event, which is especially attractive now that indoor group activities are limited. A cleanup event is also an excellent opportunity for students to earn community service credits.
