Suffolk Parks Schedule for Fall Suffolk County Executive, Steve Bellone, today announced the fall schedule for Suffolk County Department of Parks facilities, postLabor Day. After another successful year with strong attendance across all County parks, beaches and campgrounds, the fall schedule aims to continue to drive visitors with new permit and time incentives for a range of activities, as well as other important parks related information and events. “These new adjustments are part of our continued commitment to expand recreational access and bring more visitors to our
outdoor facilities,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “Whether you enjoy archery, horseback riding or one of the many annual events hosted at our facilities, Suffolk County parks have something for everyone.” For the first time, all Suffolk County campgrounds will remain open through Veteran's Day, with the exception of Smith Point, which will be closed on October 31st for the Annual Girl Scouts Lights Show. Southaven County Park will close on November 5th for the Suffolk County Junior Hunting Program. Parking fees for all
County Parks have been Suspended until Memorial Day 2019. Twilight fees at County Golf Courses will take effect at 2:00 p.m., and are applicable at Bergen Point, Indian Island, Timber Point and West Sayville Golf Courses. Fall group horseback riding permits are also on sale to the public for beach horseback riding. Beginning on September 17th, archery permits will go on sale and run from October 1, 2018 through January 31, 2019, available at 40 different County parkland locations that allow archery hunting for deer.
East Islip Starts the School Year From the high school and middle school to Connetquot, John F. Kennedy, Ruth C. Kinney and Timber Point elementary schools, East Islip students arrived back in classes on September 6th. Students enjoyed a terrific first day of school to start the educational
year. “Despite the incredible heat, the middle school students returned with great enthusiasm for the new school year,” said Principal William Brennen. “JFK students enthusiastically started the new school year,” said Principal Deborah Smith.
“Smiles and laughter once again filled the hallways as we welcomed our new third-graders, as well as the returning fourth and fifth grade students. We look forward to all the wonderful learning that will take place this year.”

Life’s Next Great Adventure “Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing at all.” – Helen Keller As I awaken on the morning of my forty-fourth birthday I am reminded of the first thought that crossed my mind four years ago, on the morning of my fortieth birthday. The thought was this: “Okay kid, the first half of the ride is over. What are you going to do with the second half? You’d better make it count.” I knew immediately that for all the accomplishments I’d achieved up until that point - becoming a professional writer, some travel, motherhood, great times with people I love, some spiritual growth - one thing that seemed to be missing in that moment was my next great adventure. I’d always been fascinated by horses and felt a sense of peace around them. I wanted to further explore that connection. I immediately went down to a local horse ranch in Melville, called Thomas School of Horsemanship, and signed up for horseback riding lessons.
I’ll never forget the way my heart pounded and the initial fear I felt as I mounted a horse for the very first time. It was a combination of, “My God, this animal is big and high off the ground!” and “I’m doing it! I’m learning to ride a horse.” At the close of my first lesson, I couldn’t remember the last time I’d felt so accomplished and proud to have tried something new and unfamiliar. Now, four years later, riding horses is as natural to me as breathing; it is my sanctuary. I enjoy riding English-saddle when I am in New York, and Western saddle when I am in Florida. When I am on a horse, the chaos of 21st century life melts away and things feel simple and beautiful. We all need that sacred retreat in our lives; something to look forward to that takes us out of our daily routine and allows us to be pure joyful consciousness. You elected to come into this physical plane to experience all that being human has to offer. Fill your life with as many moments as you can that make you feel alive. As I write this column, I
suddenly got an image in my mind from a scene in the iconic 1985 movie, Back to the Future (one of my all-time favorites). Doc Brown points to three illuminated dates on a screen, on the DeLorean Time Machine’s dashboard. He explains to Marty, “This one tells you where you are; this one tells you where you’re going; this one tells you where you’ve been.” If you visualize your mind as a camera, you can choose to pan out for a wider shot of your life. It’s a great exercise and offers the gift of perspective to examine where you are, where you’re going and where you’ve been. Try to see your life from that higher perspective. You will gain some clarity and inspiration that may direct you towards your life’s next great adventure. For many of us who are in our forties and beyond, the first half of the ride may indeed be behind us, but the second half, backed by earned wisdom, can be filled with unlimited new experiences if you allow it. Your life’s next great adventure is just one bold decision away.

The East Islip School District has hired Frank Pillitteri as the new Director of Math and Science, replacing Janet Jones. Pillitteri previously was employed as a physics teacher at Smithtown High
School West from 2001 to present, at PlainviewOld Bethpage JFK High School from 1999 to 2001, at Westbury High School from 1998 to 1999, and at Jane Addams Vocational High School from 1997 to 1998. He also worked as a research chemist at LeaRonal, Inc. from 1995 to 1997. The West Islip resident earned his bachelor’s degree in physics from Stony Brook University, a master’s degree in education from Mercy College and a school district administration degree from Stony Brook. He is a member of

Free Fall Community Planetarium The West Islip High School Science Department is pleased to announce that free fall community planetarium shows will be held on Thursday, Sept. 20 and Thursday, Oct. 18, both from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Following the presentations, held in the

Suffolk's Initiative to Promote Local Food Sources Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today unveiled a new feature for the ‘Choose LI – Local and Independent’ website. The website, which is a collaborative effort that seeks to raise awareness, advocate and inspire the community to support local and independent businesses on Long Island, has been updated to include a searchable and interactive map of all farmstands, farmers markets, fish markets, vineyards, breweries, cideries, and distilleries in Suffolk County. “Suffolk County is home to some of the most diverse and exciting agricultural and fishing selections in the entire state of New York,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “We want our residents to be able to take advantage of all the products that were grown and harvested right here in our own backyard. The new feature on ChooseLI.org makes it incredibly easy for residents to find these locally grown products and meet the commitment of spending 10 percent of their weekly food budget on local products across Suffolk County.” The new searchable map currently lists 118 farmstands, 31 fishmarkets, 26 farmers markets, 60 vineyards, 33 breweries, 2 cideries, and 3 distilleries. The ‘Choose LI – Local and Independent’ initiative asks local residents and visitors to choose goods from local and independent farmers and fishermen to preserve Long Island’s heritage industries and cultivate a vibrant, diverse and robust economy. Residents are encouraged to “Take the Pledge” and commit to spending 10 percent of their weekly food budget, approximately $17.60, on local and independent food goods. Businesses can consider creating promotional specials using the #1760 and #ChooseLI hashtags to help pledgees meet their weekly commitments. According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, New Yorkers spend approximately $176 a week on food. An analysis done by Suffolk County’s Department of Economic Development and Planning states that if just 10 percent of the over 450,000 household located in Suffolk County commits to spending 10 percent of their weekly food budget on local food and beverages over a typical harvest season for Suffolk County, that spending would add an estimated $19 million into the Suffolk County economy. This $19 million
in direct spending would create $33 million in total economic activity, and create nearly 1,000 local jobs. Suffolk County’s rich agricultural and fishing heritage helps sustain the County’s economic growth by generating tourism dollars, supporting local restaurants and service industries, and providing fresh produce for residents. Suffolk County has 39,000 acres of farmland, 36,000 of which are actively farmed, and 20,000 of which are permanently preserved through County, Town, and private land preservation programs. Suffolk County is home to over 600 farms, which employ more than 5,000 people. The County’s fisheries contribute to Long Island’s $5.9 billion tourism industry, with ocean-related businesses generating over $1.9 billion in goods and services for the County and employing nearly 34,000 people. Currently, there are over 700 Suffolk County commercial fishing establishments, which are responsible for over $31 million in direct revenues, creating nearly $81 million in economic activity and over 1,000 jobs. United Way of Long Island’s Stuff-A-Bus program, in partnership with Suffolk Transportation Service, Inc. celebrated 10 years of helping students succeed by donating 175,000 school supplies to 7,000 students across Long Island, surpassing any prior year. On September 7th, volunteers, along with members of United Way’s Board of Directors, loaded buses with 1,000 boxes filled with supplies including pencils, markers, notebooks, rulers and backpacks that were collected over the course of the summer. The supplies were delivered to nine schools across seven districts: Brentwood, Copiague, Wyandanch, Central Islip, South Huntington, Huntington, Longwood and South Country. “If a student does not have the tools they need to succeed at the start of the school year, they could lack confidence and the desire to learn because they feel they aren’t adequately prepared, or not as smart as kids with new notebooks,” said Theresa A. Regnante, President and CEO of United Way of Long Island. “In 10 years, Stuff-A-Bus has helped deliver 750,000 supplies to 32,000 children – children who were filled with self-esteem because their desks were now full.”

Dystonia Awareness Month The Suffolk County Legislature unanimously voted to designate September as Dystonia Awareness Month at the September 5th General Meeting. At a recent Medford Summer Concert Series event, which is jointly hosted by Calarco and the Medford Chamber of Commerce, money was raised to support the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation. Linda Tobin Davis was appointed as President of the Medford
Chamber of Commerce earlier this year. She was diagnosed with Dystonia in 2009. “Due to the efforts of the Medford Chamber of Commerce, and more specifically, my board and the members of our community, we were able to raise close to $1000 that is going directly to the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation. I was, and continue to be, humbled by everyone’s generosity and support,” said Davis.

Craig T. Nelson on Book Club and Incredibles 2 By Allison Kugel
From playing football fanatic, Hayden Fox, on the long running sitcom Coach; Zeek Braverman on Parenthood; and countless big screen roles, actor Craig T. Nelson’s career has been as versatile as it is prolific. It was his voice work in 2004’s Disney Pixar movie, The Incredibles, that introduced Nelson to a young audience. His voice is so recognizable as the voice of Mr. Incredible, that the world stops spinning for a beat whenever a starstruck child hears him speak. Nelson recently played Mary Steenburgen’s husband in the romantic comedy, Book Club and resumed his role as Mr. Incredible in Incredibles 2.

Allison Kugel: What does an ensemble piece like Book Club allow you to do as an actor? Craig T. Nelson: The opportunity to work with the different characters that are being played broadens what you can do as an actor. Oftentimes, the way people react differently to different people they meet, it’s that same dynamic, and it can be something of an adventure. Although in Book Club, most of my scenes are with Mary [Steenburgen]. There are only one or two scenes where I’m with everyone. Allison Kugel: Book Club addresses that mid-to-later-life slump that people can slide into without even realizing it’s happening. How do you think men experience this phase of life differently from women? Craig T. Nelson: I think we experience it in much the same way. It depends
upon societal pressures. Part of the confusion is the result of what society is demanding now, which is pretty much all youth oriented. Cosmetically and pharmaceutically you’re supposed to be able to prolong your life, or at least the appearance of it. The reality is that you do age. Yes, we are living longer, but there’s more pressure. I suppose it’s how that manifests in each of us, which has to do with our own personality. There’s a lot of pressure to be young. But there is also a lot of pressure being old, not to get any older. I think that is so screwed up. Allison Kugel: In Book Club, your wife, played by Mary Steenburgen, is upset because she feels your marriage has fallen into a slump. Do you think marriage should be able to go through its natural ebbs and flows? Craig T. Nelson: If you’re married to your best friend, as I am, you have to realize you’re going to have ups and downs. You’re physically going to change, emotionally you’re going to change. You have to adapt and be prepared for that stuff. That’s also part of the adventure. It seems like just yesterday I was talking to older actors about aging. I was a young working actor, and they were all telling me how difficult it was for them, and how they were approaching a period in their life where they felt they weren’t working as much. When it started happening to me, I think I was prepared for it to a certain degree. Allison Kugel: People may not know that you began your career as a standup comedian. Craig T. Nelson: Barry Levinson and
I did stand up [comedy] together for four years, and then another guy, Rudy DeLuca, joined us. We wrote and performed comedy, and then we worked with Tim Conway, John Byner and Alan King. That’s how I started in the business. Allison Kugel: How did that experience inform how you approach a role? Craig T. Nelson: I was never really interested in doing standup comedy. Barry Levinson and I were in the Oxford Theatre together, which was a theatre group in LA. We got to talking and Barry said, “Why don’t we do a standup act?” I had never done that and never even thought of it, but we put an act together. We went out and auditioned and started doing clubs. It was an intro into the business, and I met so many incredible people during that time. It does give me a different perspective on acting. Comedy helped me to enlarge and be better at what I did. Another important thing is that you just get better as you get older. I’m so much more comfortable in a scene now than I ever was. There are so many experiences and so many people to draw on. It’s a wonderful place to be. Allison Kugel: This is not your first time playing Mary Steenburgen’s husband. You also played husband and wife in the 2009 movie, The Proposal, alongside Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock. How was it playing her husband again in Book Club? Craig T. Nelson: She’s so much fun to work with. She’s got this wonderful quirkiness to her that is so beautiful. It’s also very challenging, because you need to stay on top of your game with her, as with all the actresses in this film. I’ve worked with Diane [Keaton], I’ve worked with Jane [Fonda], I hadn’t met Candice [Bergen] until this film, so that was neat. I look forward to continuing to work with Mary. There is an understanding between me and Mary. You’re able to ask questions of each other or address problems in a scene together. There’s no wandering around, trying to get to the truth of something. Allison Kugel: Let’s switch gears and discuss Incredibles 2! In the first movie, The Incredibles, your character, Mr. Incredible is struggling with living life as a civilian. He’s dying to be a superhero again and to use his powers. Holly Hunter’s character, Elastigirl, wanted a normal family life. In Incredibles 2, it’s reversed. She’s
out being a superhero and you’re the stay-at-home dad. How does that go for Mr. Incredible? Craig T. Nelson: He doesn’t quite understand it and is feeling rejected, like, “Why don’t they want me out there?” He now has to take a back seat and for him that’s difficult. He makes the sacrifice for his wife. He’s got a resentment going on, but as you watch him at home you get to know these kids in a way that’s fun and interesting. And you get to see a guy have to adapt and get to know his children in a way that he hasn’t. That was neat for me to play. Allison Kugel: How do you get into character when you’re voicing Mr. Incredible? Craig T. Nelson: You prepare ahead of time in the session, especially vocally because there are a lot of different ranges you have to get to. There are scenes when you’re doing a lot of yelling and shouting. And it’s a long and involved process that’s complexly different from regular acting.
recognize the voice, it’s interesting. And then you have to convince this kid that you are! And you feel like an idiot trying to get a seven-year-old to believe you (laughs). They look at you with this wonder, yet at the same time disbelief. It gets confusing even for me. Allison Kugel: My nine-year-old is obsessed! He loved both The Incredibles and Incredibles 2, when it hit theatres this summer. Craig T. Nelson: The special FX are extraordinary. Since 2004 when the original movie was out, they’ve developed a whole new range of different processes that have gone into this second movie, including its color enrichment. For me, the exciting thing about the second movie is the character Jack Jack, the baby, really comes alive and that’s going to be so much fun for people to see. What’s so great about this movie is that it’s a family deal. You can take your family to this movie and have a great time. And same with Book Club. It’s two movies I’m proud to let my family watch.
Allison Kugel: I’m sure you’ve watched the first movie, The Incredibles, with your grandchildren. What do they think of you playing Mr. Incredible?

Here’s a look at two ways you can stretch your mind and show your heart: Experience Corps AARP Foundation Experience Corps unites teachers, schools and older adults to improve children’s academic and social outcomes. This benefits the children, the schools and the volunteers. The program has been proven to help children who aren’t reading at grade level become better readers by the end of third grade. Last school year, 76 percent of students who were below grade level at the beginning of the year raised their reading and literacy performance by one or more proficiency levels with the help of Experience Corps volunteers. The goal is to improve children’s literacy,
strengthen communities, develop cultures of inspiration in schools and support hardworking teachers. It’s already changed the lives of thousands of children in schools across America. Volunteers should be age 50 or older; have at least a high school diploma or GED; pass a criminal background check; pass a basic literacy screening; attend 25 hours of annual training; and have five to 15 hours a week to offer during the school year. Tax-Aide AARP Foundation also runs Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, giving special attention to those 50 and older. It offers free tax-filing help to those who need it most. You do not need to be a member of AARP or even a retiree to use this free service. IRS tax-certified volunteer preparers in libraries, malls, banks, community centers and senior centers answer
questions and prepare tax returns. In addition to earned and retirement income reporting, they can also help with investment income (interest, dividends, and capital gains for Schedule D), Schedule C for individuals with small businesses that have less than $25,000 in annual expenses, and various health care, education, child and earned income credits. Compassionate and friendly individuals can volunteer for the upcoming tax season. Volunteers receive training and continued support in a welcoming environment. Supporting Long Island Artists The oldest art group on Long Island, The Wet Paints Studio Group, is exhibiting in the Bayport Blue Point Library now through Saturday, September 29, 2018. The artist reception will be held on Saturday, September 29th from 2pm to 5pm. Patrons will be able to meet talented artists from all over Suffolk County, Long Island, enjoy refreshments and browse forty-one pieces of art, created by Long Island
artists. Most of the pieces on exhibition will be for sale, just in time for home holiday decor. You don’t have to go to Manhattan to admire and purchase great art. The Wet Paints Studio Group has over 200 artists dedicated to promoting fine arts. The group was established in 1950 in Sayville, New York. They provide workshops, visiting artist demonstrations, and networking opportunities for Long Island artists.

All proceeds went to participating breast cancer coalitions and organizations, as well as to the Long Island Ducks’ QuackerJack Foundation, the charitable arm of the Long Island Ducks.

Suffolk Puts "Text-A-Tip" School Safety Measure in Place Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced that the Suffolk County Police Department’s ‘TextA-Tip’ mobile phone line is now live for the start of the 2018-2019 school year. The ‘Text-A-Tip’ system is designed exclusively for individuals who have information about an impending threat to school facilities across the County, and will allow residents to confidentially share any information pertaining to a threat in a Suffolk County school. The "Text-A-Tip" system is being facilitated by Nixle, a commercial service provider that the Suffolk County Police Department has used for several other
applications. Anyone who has information regarding a possible threat to a school in Suffolk County can use this service by texting the number 888-777. In the body of the text write “TIP SUFFOLK” followed by the message and the name of the school. The tips will then be configured to generate e-mails and text messages to the Suffolk County Police Department. The tips will be directed to the Suffolk County Police Department’s Communications section, who will determine where to route the tips based on their content. From there the Suffolk County Police Department will launch an immediate investigation to
determine the credibility of the threat. Tips will be monitored on a 24/7 basis, and school districts will be notified accordingly. While the system is confidential, intentional false tips will be prosecuted. This service comes at no additional cost to the Suffolk County Police Department. The "Text-A-Tip" initiative has been implemented in addition to several other public safety measures recently undertaken by Suffolk County to ensure that students, teachers, administrators and staff remain safe while in schools.
