Jackie works at Walmart and would walk to work and assist residents at her local nursing home while she wasn’t working. Her friends wanted to make it easier for her to get around. After the wish was received, James Ciervo and Barbara Ransom of the Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce helped get Jackie a beautiful bicycle. They brought the bicycle to her workplace and the smile on her face was ear to ear! This foundation is presently looking for more wish applicants in the Long Island area. The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. This organization truly makes a difference in the lives of seniors nationwide. Often the elderly gets overlooked or they simply can’t seem to achieve their goals on their own. This is where Twilight Wish steps in. Although their headquarters are located in Pennsylvania, the foundation has chapters located around the nation. James Ciervo, who devoted much of his life to helping seniors, created their Long Island Chapter 15 years ago. His career was in the senior health care industry for many years and he continues to help seniors through the Twilight Wish Foundation today. The process of applying to be a wish recipient is fairly simple. You can visit their website at www.twilightwish.org and click on the “Wishes” tab followed by “Request A Twilight Wish”. From here you can start the process. Applications can be submitted for yourself or on behalf of someone else. The recipient of the wish must be 65 years of age or older (or a permanent resident of an eldercare facility), a legal US citizen, have an annual income of less than 200% of current federal government published poverty level income, or be unable to grant your own wish (not including financial reasons), have a history of giving back to others, be cognitively and physically capable of communicating and

With 150 volunteer members, Exchange Ambulance of the Islips provides 24/7 Emergency Medical Service (EMS) coverage to 45,000 residents across approximately twenty square miles. Exchange Ambulance also provides EMS assistance to the residents of Fire Island via the Suffolk County Police Department’s Marine Bureau. All proceeds from this event will support Exchange Ambulance, a non profit organization, in its mission to provide the best possible care for our community.

Thousands of individuals nationwide will join together in the battle against childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases by participating in the Long Island St. Jude Walk/Run Long Island. In East Islip, the St. Jude Walk/Run Long Island will take place Sept. 21, at Heckscher State Park Field 2 presented by Tweezerman! Because of generous donors and events like the St. Jude Walk/Run Long Island, families never receive a bill from St.

Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food – because all a family should worry about is helping their child live. Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20 percent to more than 80 percent since it opened more than 50 years ago. Honorary Membership Bestowed Great South Bay Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadrons, has elected to bestow Honorary Membership to Gina Lieneck of Deer Park, New York. Gina’s family was involved in boating accident on August 17th, 2005 which critically injured her, and her husband, and killed her 11-year-old daughter, Brianna. Since the crash, Gina Lieneck has been tirelessly advocating for a bill that would require individuals to take an eight-hour course on boating safety before they can operate a motorized boat. After several stalls in Albany over several years, on August 6th, 2019, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed ‘Brianna’s Law’ in Copiague, NY. Under the new bill, all motor boat operators born on or

after Jan. 1, 1993 must complete a safety course to operate a motor boat beginning in 2020, those born after Jan. 1, 1988 must complete a safety course beginning in 2022, those born on or after Jan. 1, 1983 must complete a safety course beginning in 2023, and those born on or after Jan. 1, 1978 must complete a safety course beginning in 2024. At the September board meeting of Great South Bay Power Squadron, Commander James Milton nominated Gina Lieneck for Honorary Membership. The board approved the nomination unanimously. Gina will be presented with her certificate of honorary membership at the September 27th General Membership Meeting at the Ancient Order of Hibernians Hall, located at 65 Champlin Ave, East Islip, NY by the Commander.

Honorary Memberships are only awarded to those individuals who work to further the ideals and missions of the United States Power Squadrons, which Gina has clearly done. Since 2010, only one other person has been awarded Honorary Membership in Great South Bay. The United States Power Squadrons and America’s Boating Club is a non-profit organization of boating enthusiasts who have a common interest and appreciation of recreational boating, boating safety, and education. As a public service, America’s Boating Club offers and provides Safe Boating Courses.
