As we dive into another unpredictable fall due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the American Heart Association, a global force for longer, healthier lives for all, urges people to take time to nurture their body and mind for better overall health. “After the past several months disrupted many of our typical routines, this fall is a great chance to reset and resume a more consistent work, school and family schedule. Start small by committing to eating more meals together as a family, said Anne Thorndike, M.D., MPH, associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, director of the Metabolic Syndrome Clinic at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and volunteer chair of the American Heart Association’s Nutrition Committee. “Routines can be a good way to provide structure and clarity during busy or stressful seasons, so scheduling in meals at home or regular exercise is not only good for physical health, but good for managing stress as well.” When it comes to mealtime, there are plenty of clever ways to add in nourishing ingredients, reminds Bridget Wojciak, director of Nutrition at Kroger Health, a national

sponsor of the American Heart Association’s Healthy for GoodTM initiative, which helps people create positive, lasting change in their health and well-being one step at a time. “It is a helpful frame of mind to ask yourself what you can add to a meal instead of taking away, like mixing in zucchini noodles with traditional noodles or adding in shredded vegetables to sauces or soups,” Wojciak said. “Experiment with new recipes and new preparations and see what works best for your family.” In addition to using mealtime to intentionally connect, the American Heart Association offers these healthy tips for a healthier fall: Unplug to connect: September is a great reminder to eat regular meals at home with family. Family meals reduce stress, boost self-esteem and make the whole family feel connected.[1] To help families have more fun at mealtime, the American Heart Association has conversation topics that are great for all ages. Savor seasonal flavors: Fall brings new seasonal produce and recipe inspiration for family meals. Sign up to receive a free cookbook with hearthealthy, delicious recipes from the American Heart

Spend time outside: Take advantage of cooler temperatures by spending time outdoors for better physical and mental wellbeing. Write down three things you’re grateful for each day, or reach out to a friend or family member and tell them how much you appreciate them. As the need for food donations continues to rise dramatically, Riverheadbased RISE Life Services will host FOODSTOCK on September 18, a event featuring live music, food and art with the goal of raising money and collecting food for RISE Food Pantries. “This will be a memorable event, one that people will want to come to year after year, and help their neighbors who are facing historic needs,” said Charles Evdos,

Executive Director of RISE Life Services. “We want to bring people together for an incredible day for an incredibly important cause.” FOODSTOCK will be held September 18 at Bayside Clam Bar & Grill from 1:00 - 6:00 p.m. at 300 Bayview Ave. in East Islip. NYS MASTER INSTRUCTOR OF THE YEAR - James Rogan (left), Director of Safety & Training for Educational Bus Transportation, which provides school bus transportation for a number of school districts in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, was recently named New York State Master Instructor of the Year. The award was presented to Rogan by Paul Overbaugh, New York State Education Department Director of Pupil Transportation. Master Instructors teach individuals seeking certification as School Bus Driver Instructors and hold the highest pupil transportation certification from the New York State Education Department. Helping Hand Rescue Mission(HHRM) is a local non-proﬁt organization that is based in Huntington, but serves people all over our island. Their mission is to improve the spiritual and temporal conditions of the children, families and people of the communities they serve by providing excellent service to all who come, whether they be rich or poor, high or low social status. They are here to love, to serve and to give. They are so excited to be hosting their ﬁrst Community Share Day on Saturday, September 18th with the Huntington Assembly of God! This will be a fun and engaging new way for their kindhearted, caring donors to connect with the families that they serve in their beautiful Huntington Station community. How does it work? You register online for a time slot. Then you neatly pack your car with the items you would like to share with the community, such as clothing, toys, household items, unexpired nonperishable food and any other items in good/new condition. Clothing must not be ripped, torn, or stained, missing buttons, or broken zippers. If you would like to give gift cards to families you may, but they ask that no cash is given. Also, no large electronics or furniture please. You can sign up for a two-hour time slot, where they will have the cars set up “trunk-or-treat” style in the parking lot. Community members will be able to walk around to the different cars and browse. You must stay by your

request.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has been closely monitoring the COVID-19 positivity rates, hospitalizations and projected trends for this September across the country to evaluate the safety of hosting an in-person event this September. The Museum of American Armor’s “The Road to Victory” program will be held on Saturday, September 18th and Sunday, September 19th inside Old Bethpage Village Restoration, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage, N.Y., featuring many of the operational military vehicles in the Armor Museum’s collection. An additional donation offers families a unique opportunity to ride inside a Half Track, Command Car, or troop transport. The gates to Old Bethpage Village Restoration will be

open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with last ticket sales at 2:30 p.m. Admission is $15.00 for adults, $12.00 for seniors and children (5-12), under 5 is free. Veterans and active duty personnel are free. A Parade Of History The Armor Museum hosts an operational collection of over forty armor vehicles including the mighty Hellcat tank destroyer, halftracks, armored cars similar to those that liberated the Nazi death camps, Vietnam era combat vehicles, and the massive

M48 Patton tank that would have confronted Soviet armor in the disastrous event the Cold War became an open conflict. The museum will also present operational replicas of several enemy vehicles as a dramatic reminder of the powerful forces that have faced America in its historic defense of democracy.
