Their mission is to improve the spiritual and temporal conditions of the children, families and people of the communities they serve by providing excellent service to all who come, whether they be rich or poor, high or low social status. This non-profit was founded in 1965 by Reverend J.A. Gaines, his wife, Reverend Rose Marie Gaines, and her mother, Florence E. Meringola. 56 years later, their work continues under the direction of the founders’ daughter, Rev. Kimberly Gaines-Gambino, who functions as the President/Pastor of this organization. She has also served as Pastor of Half Hollow Community Church in Dix Hills from 2011-2019, however she resigned from that position in January of 2020 to devote more of her time to the work of HHRM. She is a wife to her husband Andrew and mom & stepmom to five amazing kids. How does HHRM serve others? Feeding The Hungry: HHRM serves approximately 200-300 families per week with non-perishable items and fresh produce, fruit, meat, eggs, milk and bread. Since March 21, 2020, they have given out over 27,000 food bags to people in need on Long Island. HHRM partners with many schools, organizations, temples, churches, youth organizations, civic organizations, clubs, businesses, and
the many individuals and families donating to our pantry to gather food for the hungry.
School Supply Distribution: Every child deserves to have the supplies they need for their education, feel confident in a room with their peers and be prepared for their school year. This non-profit gathers and distributes school supplies to local children that are in need. Baby Blessings: Baby Blessings is a part of HHRM that focuses on providing families with children under 3 years old with diapers, baby clothes, other baby supplies and a brunch! Baby Blessings is hosted at Huntington Assembly of God every third Tuesday of the month. HHRM is so thankful to partner with Family Service League, the Allied Foundation and Huntington Assembly of God to make Baby Blessings possible. Community Closet: HHRM runs something called the Community Closet, which provides new and gently used seasonallyappropriate clothing to anyone in need during it’s hours of operation. Appropriate clothing can be a genuinely difficult expense for families, especially since most have children that are always growing. Helping Hand Rescue Mission also holds various other outreach programs, some of which are seasonal. There are many ways you can volunteer with, donate to or receive help from HHRM. Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island is holding a remembrance Mass for families of victims, first responders and Ground Zero workers as part of the 20th year remembrance of the September 11th 2001 Terrorist Attacks on America. The Mass will be led by Bishop John O. Barres, of the Diocese of Rockville Centre. This special service will be held outside at the Cemetery of the Holy Rood’s 9/11 Memorial. The Mass will take place on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2021, beginning at 1 p.m. Attendees are asked to arrive by 12:30 p.m. Family members and members of the Long Island Community and the public are welcome and encouraged to attend. Seating will be limited, and not guaranteed. Recognizing that some family members may be elderly and/or need assistance, those attending are urged to plan in advance and consider arriving early. Parking may be some distance from the September 11th Memorial where the outdoor Mass will be held. Attendees are asked to RSVP by Saturday, Sept. 4, 2021 by completing the RSVP form on www.CCLongIsland.org or to email Memorials@ CCLongIsland.org with their name and the number of attendees. Approximately one
hundred names have recently been added to the cemetery’s September 11th Memorial. The memorial, a beautiful black marble sculpture that is the center piece of a specially designated area of the cemetery which was set aside for victims of the terrorist attacks, was erected in 2003. The memorial currently displays the names of 414 individuals who were victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center. Newly added names include both those who passed away on 9/11 and individuals who worked at Ground Zero and succumbed to related illnesses, bringing the number of those to be remembered on the memorial on the day of the Mass to approximately 500 in total. “As we mark the 20th year since 9-11, we know that many people remain profoundly impacted. This special Mass led by Bishop Barres is an important event on this solemn day. It is important that we remember the victims of the attacks, those who rushed to their aid and all who selflessly gave of themselves afterwards at Ground Zero, suffering years of chronic health conditions and related illnesses. Our memorial wall at Holy Rood Cemetery is a place of solace, reflection and tribute to the lives that were tragically
lost. We welcome all to visit the memorial at any time, including joining us at this remembrance mass,” said Richard Bie, CEO of Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island. RISE Life Services Calls Everyone To FOODSTOCK To Help The Hungry
As the need for food donations continues to rise dramatically, Riverheadbased RISE Life Services will host FOODSTOCK on September 18, a event featuring live music, food and art with the goal of raising money and collecting food for RISE Food Pantries. “This will be a memorable event, one that people will want to come to year after year, and help their neighbors who are facing historic needs,” said Charles Evdos,
Executive Director of RISE Life Services. “We want to bring people together for an incredible day for an incredibly important cause.” FOODSTOCK will be held September 18 at Bayside Clam Bar & Grill from 1:00 - 6:00 p.m. at 300 Bayview Ave. in East Islip. A minimum donation per person is $10.00. All proceeds will go to RISE Life Services and their food pantries in Suffolk County. Music will be provided by Penny Lane, one of
the area’s premier Beatles tribute bands, Beach Boys tribute band Endless Summer and James Taylor tribute Hourglass. Travel Safely This Labor Day
Labor Day is a celebration of workers and the labor movements in the United States and Canada. Often considered the unofficial end of summer, Labor Day prompts many people to travel for one last getaway prior to the arrival of fall. Labor Day gettogethers with family and friends typically include barbecues and other outdoor activities, and these gatherings may attract loved ones from various areas of the country. The
National Safety Council warns that thousands of people will be injured in traffic accidents during the upcoming Labor Day weekend. In recent years, traffic fatalities
over Labor Day weekend have averaged around 15 percent higher than in similar, non-holiday periods, says the NSC. In

Travelers are urged to remain diligent in regard to hygiene and other safety practices. The following tips can help Labor Day travelers stay as safe as possible. • Call ahead and inquire about any travel restrictions. Many areas of the country have reopened, but it is important to find out if there are restrictions on crowd limits or if certain facilities are closed. • Book early and leave time for travel. People are increasingly anxious to travel once again, and may wait until the
Labor Day holiday to do so. Hotels and other amenities may fill up fast, so book travel plans well in advance and leave ample time for traveling to account for large crowds and busy roadways. • Enforce a zero tolerance policy for intoxicated driving. Those who are planning to drink should never get behind the wheel. Also, young drivers are at particular risk to be involved in alcoholrelated crashes, so teens and underage young adults should not be allowed to drink at parties. • Limit distractions behind the wheel. Make
a policy that the vehicle is a distraction-free zone. This includes keeping the radio low, stowing the driver’s cell phone out of reach so texts or other notifications do not become distractions and helping to keep children occupied so they’re not making a ruckus. • Exercise caution in inclement weather. Late-summer storms can roll in and cause downpours. Drive slowly and cautiously, pulling over until visibility and conditions improve, if necessary. These are some ways travelers can emphasize safety as they enjoy Labor Day weekend away from home.
