Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced that the County’s 2018 Piping Plover Conservation Program has resulted in a record number of successful piping plover pairs and fledges this summer while retaining recreational opportunities for outer beach enthusiasts at Smith Point County Park. In prior years, a vast majority of the outer beach area at Smith Point County Park was closed for public access to protect the plover breeding grounds. Realizing the importance of enhancing public access to the popular outer beach, the Department of Parks and Recreation updated its Endangered Species Protection Program with the goal of complying with federal conservation laws

This year’s numbers produced 62 pairs with 100 fledges, the highest number of fledges in the program’s history. Now that the fledglings are grown, the outer beach has been returned to full access to the public and four-wheel drive beach vehicle enthusiasts. Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and the Islip Town Board recently joined at August’s Town Board meeting in celebration of Islip athletes who achieved success in the Special Olympics. Among the honorees were the East Islip Special Olympics team who on May 19th, and after months of preparation and training, exhibited determination despite heavy rains, bringing home a total of 24 medals. The team of six middle schoolers ((Riley Carrillo, Madeline Director, Jake Kozak, Janissa Lloyd, Julia Modico and Michael Pacheco-Uvidia) and nine high schoolers (Delany Conlon, Danny DiOrio, Robert Phillips, Jake Pippatone, Michael Quagliara, Sara Spruyt and Kelly Stupplebeen) along with coaches Laura O’Donnell and Julie Susskind, earned 11 gold, 11 silver and two bronze medals. It all began back in elementary school; earlier, even. The clipping in the local South Bay Newspaper heralding the entrance of the Class of 2000...into kindergarten. I was a part of that storied graduating class, and as we progressed through the next dozen or so years of schooling, the various accolades of my fellow Lindy alums would be documented within the pages of our neighborhood paper. My own graduation announcement was featured there, as I moved on from the halls of Lindy High and began my studies in journalism on the opposite shore at the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University. Four years later, it was time to take a stab at a career in the real world and, upon the encouragement of my mom, I sent a random query to the newly minted South Bay’s Neighbor, thinking it might be an ideal place to gain my footing in the field. As luck would have it, the paper was in the process of a major overhaul, transitioning from its rather antiquated black and white format and beginning the arduous task
of streamlining what had been, to that point, an extremely laborintensive, manual ordeal week after week. I entered the picture as an editorial assistant, designated as the one to cull through the incoming e-mails and process the local community news submitted by readers. Photos, press releases, upcoming events whatever seemed newsworthy was prepared, along with a selection of handwritten articles penned by our original editor, Lillian Nolin, still a fixture at the old Lindenhurst office. As I worked from my desk in Farmingdale, monitoring the weekly content, I was fortunate to be surrounded by a staff that took me under its collective wing, teaching me the ins and outs of editing, formatting and even a little graphic design. Fast forward three or so years, and the 11 original editions had morphed into 43. Lillian had retired, leaving me as the “veteran” editor, now responsible for penning my own weekly column, serving as a “roving reporter” of sorts covering select community events, taking photographs, and coming up with my own concepts for new features.
At all of 25 years-old, I was entrusted with the responsibility of driving this product to the next level editorially - and I loved every second of it. Over the next decade {wow, a whole decade}, the structure of South Bay’s Neighbor progressed and transformed, as did the staff, the content and the design. In the winter of 2014, we added a magazine to the mix, introducing Seasons, our high-end glossy feature, publishing five times a year. Always evolving, this was yet another opportunity to be a part of a product from the ground up, and to showcase our creativity in a new format for an even wider audience. What began as a first step into the field of journalism turned into a large portion of my career, a solid foundation from which to build upon and grow. I have often said that, although my 13-year tenure here has been, technically, one job, it has felt like several all rolled into one. In many ways, the evolution has come full circle - from the local clipping back in 1987, to now, as I pen my second-to-last column for the old hometown South Bay...a Lindy girl at heart, always.

In preparation for moving up to Islip High School, the entire eighth grade at Islip Middle School visited the high school this year as part of the first ever “Eighth Grade Rounds”
orientation initiative. The students were broken up into groups and, led by the high school’s Peer Ambassadors, visited nine different active classrooms to get a glimpse of what
high school is like. In a follow-up event, the Peer Ambassadors later visited the middle school to follow up with the eighth-graders about their experience.
Middle School Sewing Star East Islip Middle School student Stephanie Landaverde is proud of her newfound ability to sew pillows and clothing and design new scarves. Landeverde, who will attend eighth grade this fall, began to learn how to sew in her family and consumer science class during the last school year. She enjoyed it so much that her parents bought her a Brother
sewing machine, which she brought to school daily. Landaverde met with her FACS teacher, Patricia Emmons Fritz, before school and after school to enhance her impressive sewing skills and help her to create more pillows and scarves. She also assisted other students with their sewing projects. “Once you start something that you enjoy, you should continue doing

Kids Helping Kids inspired by the students’ questions to provide them with a unique opportunity called Kids Helping Kids. Four students – Parker Barry, Erica DeLapi, Lauren Limmer and Jaci Narducci, all students at Islip Middle School – wrote proposals to be considered, which included designing a dessert they would like to make for a fundraiser and writing an essay about why they wanted to be a part of the project. The students were interviewed by Guasta, Lambert and Lodestar founder James Regan, who were so impressed that they decided to invite all four
students to work with Guasta on the desserts they designed for a Lodestar fundraiser at Pure Sugar. “It was interesting because I’d never really baked before,” said Limmer. “Baking was kind of new to me, and I learned a lot about baking while I was doing it. I didn’t expect that, I actually learned more than I thought I would.” “When we baked for the fundraiser, we hoped that people enjoyed what we made because it’s a really great organization,” said Limmer.
