The National Ovarian Cancer Coalition To Host Its Annual Together In Teal® No Boundaries National Broadcast Celebration
The National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC), will be hosting its 2020 Together in TEAL - No Boundaries, National Broadcast Celebration on Saturday, September 26, at 7 PM ET/ 6 PM CT and 4 PM PT. NOCC is launching a new nationwide campaign and event that will enable our community to unite from coast-to-coast with no limits. While our traditional Together in TEAL Run/Walk events cannot take place in the interest of safety and public health, our community needs to be united. The organization’s
signature event, hosted in communities across the United States each year, raises the critical funds necessary to support Earlier Awareness, Quality of Life for Survivors, Research, and Community Outreach. On September 26, we will unite people across the nation touched by ovarian cancer for our Together in TEAL - No Boundaries National Broadcast Celebration. This event will highlight the most inspiring and remarkable stories being told every day in our communities. Ovarian cancer has no boundaries, so

TAKING A LOOK BACK! This August I have been “taking a look back” at articles I have published in the past, giving various charities another chance at exposure. During these tough times, it is very important we continue to help others and support local charities where we can. Enjoy this past article about a wonderful nonprofit, The Book Fairies.

Every book that they collect goes through sorting, their process of thoroughly examining the type of book and condition it’s in. Reading materials can not only foster literacy and academic success, but they can also provide a respite from personal struggles and nature a love of reading across age groups. 50% of schools that this organization works with does not have libraries. 64% of fourth graders in New York State read below their grade level. Books can be expensive and many people do not have the funds to afford reading material. Thankfully, Book Fairies are there to help! Their first year as a non-profit, The Book Fairies collected 35,000 books. As of today, they have

This can be helpful for collaborative learning assignments or just to see a familiar face. • Stick To Tools That Work. Once students find apps or systems that work, they should stick with them, offers Khan Academy, an educational tutoring resource. There are many factors outside of one’s control during virtual instruction, but maintaining consistency with tools and schedules is one way to feel more confident and secure. • Check Student Accounts Frequently. Just like students, teachers may be learning as they go in regard to remote learning strategies. Students should be sure to check school email accounts or other places where teachers post assignments a few times per day so that they stay on top of all assignments
and are aware of due dates. • Reach Out To Instructors. Allegheny College suggests students contact their teachers if they are unsure of how to participate in remote learning environments. Ask questions about assignments, get clarification on key topics and be sure to tune into any remote chats or virtual “office hours.” • Stay In Touch With Guidance, If Needed. Remote learning is a new experience for many students, and there may be certain struggles or road blocks. It can be easy to grow frustrated with equipment failures or lack of in-person interaction. Schools employ qualified therapists and guidance counselors who are just a click, call or email away if issues need to be talked through. Students should utilize all resources made available to them. Virtual home instruction can be made even easier with some extra assistance and guidance.

5 Smart Ways to Prep for Back-to-School Without the Stress (StatePoint) Whether the new school year means your kids will be heading back to the classroom, learning remotely, or a mix of both, back-to-school will most likely be stressful. Thinking ahead can help prepare everyone for a new way of learning, and simplify the transition from the slow ease of summertime to the bustle of the school year. Follow these tips so that everyone is ready when the first bell rings. 1. Resume the Routine. Summertime schedules are often lax, but a more structured routine is important during the school year. At least a week before classes start, reestablish set bedtimes and mealtimes to ease everyone back into school year habits. Even if children are remote-learning this fall, keep first day of school traditions alive with their favorite breakfast, pictures and a first day of school outfit. 2. Simplify Shopping. Create a checklist of items you’ll need to buy, as well as plan out where you’ll make purchases. Check school dress codes and required supply lists before you head out, so you don’t have to make multiple trips. In addition to the usual supplies, stock up on extra face masks, personal tissues and hand sanitizer. If your child will be learning virtually, you may want to consider adding items to the list like extra USB chargers and ports, noisecancelling headphones – to help older siblings concentrate – and even blue light filtering glasses for kids that will be in front of a computer or tablet more than usual.

3. Set Up a Homework Station. A dedicated space to store supplies and paperwork is key to staying organized. Let kids take pride in this space so they want to spend time studying there by having them create their own accessories and decorating them to their liking. Label Supplies. Kids are forgetful and it’s easy for supplies to become misplaced or swapped with other children. To ease your mind about your child sharing pencils or accidentally grabbing the wrong backpack, have a night where you sit down and label supplies with colorful Duck Tape. Many students are successful because they follow a schedule. The Center for Social and Emotional Foundations of Early Learning says that routines and schedules are important because they influence a child’s emotional and cognitive development. Children feel secure with schedules, which may help them recognize what’s expected of them. “I am particularly concerned about kids congregating off-campus,” said Jason Siegel, a senior double majoring in journalism and history with a minor in political science. “I think students will go off campus for get-togethers and parties where there will be no one to enforce mask-wearing and social distancing. One of the biggest concerns from some of the students is intergrading the incoming freshmen. Many upperclassmen worry that these new students will have a
harder time meshing with the rest of them. “I met a bunch of my closer friends in-person during orientation,” said Shelby Van Hyfte, a sophomore neuroscience major. “These incoming freshmen will mainly be meeting people through different methods. It’s going to take more effort for them to make friends.” “I’m worried that the incoming freshmen will not be able to have the real Hofstra experience,” said an anonymous sophomore majoring in health science. “I met my best friend at orientation. These students had to do theirs online, and it’s not the same.” Hofstra said that they’re trying to put together events such as drivein movies and virtual activities so that the incoming freshmen will be able to meet people and make new friends.

Factors To Consider When Setting Up A School Carpool
Getting kids to and from school can be a challenge for working parents. School start times do not always coordinate with parents’ work schedules, and school typically lets out before parents’ workdays end. Carpools are one way parents confront the challenge posed by juggling work and family. With a new school year approaching, parents can take the following factors into consideration as they work to establish carpools. • Determine your insurance needs. Before planning carpools, parents who plan to participate should contact their auto insurance providers to make sure their policies cover driving others. The organizer of the carpool should make sure every parent does this prior to
the school year. Some parents may need to purchase supplemental insurance, and each parent should be willing to provide proof of their insurance as well. • Reach out to parents in your neighborhood. A carpool that is neighborhood-based as opposed to one that is based more on students’ social circles will likely prove more convenient for parents. A carpool with neighbors means parents won’t have to drive far to pick up and/or drop off other students, saving everyone valuable time each day. • Don’t go overboard. Even if your minivan or SUV can seat half a dozen children, you may want to limit the carpool to a more manageable number of youngsters. Getting kids up and out the door each morning is a challenge when there’s just one youngster
involved, let alone several. By limiting a carpool to between two and four children, parents won’t have to worry about too many hiccups during their morning routines. • Discuss early closures and other unique days in advance. School schedules tend to be the same throughout the year, but there are various times when early closures can affect carpools. This is especially true for parents with children who attend different schools. When planning a carpool, discuss early closure dates with other parents and develop a plan for how to manage pickup. School carpools are convenient for working parents. Planning prior to the school year is a great way to ensure carpools are successful.

The 2020-21 school year promises to be one unlike any other today’s students, and even their parents and grandparents, have ever known. In March 2020, many schools were forced to abruptly cancel in-person instruction as government officials tried to prevent the spread of the deadly COVID-19 virus. As the 201920 school year wound down and summer approached, school officials remained uncertain if they would reopen for in-person instruction in the fall, leaving student-athletes to wonder what would happen to fall sports seasons. The cancellation of in-person school sessions and extracurricular activities was hard on every student, and athletes have proven no exception. Many graduating seniors did not get a chance to compete alongside their teammates during spring sports season, bringing their scholastic athletic careers to an abrupt end. With the upcoming 2020-21 scholastic sports season in similar limbo, student-athletes in the class of 2021 might be worried that their own chances to compete are in jeopardy as well. In light of that, local communities can take steps to support scholastic athletes during an uncertain time. • Make a show of your support. Stayat-home measures prevented many schools from hosting traditional graduation ceremonies for graduating seniors. However, many communities found ways to honor their grads, and they can do the same for scholastic

Armor Museum Opens With COVID-19 Protocols And A Motivational “Call To Arms” From World War II How to motivate visitors to maintain social distancing upon entering the Museum of American Armor? The Armor Museum has enlisted the Army. The Museum of American Armor, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage, has teamed up with Dr. Erik Villard, Digital Military Historian at the U.S. Army Center of Military History, to present his innovative reinvention of motivational posters first created by the War Department during World War II. From G.I.s prepared to throw hand sanitizers (as opposed to hand grenades), to a masked Uncle Sam leading a charge against COVID, the posters will be situated throughout the museum, adjacent to its tanks, artillery pieces, and uniformed mannequins. Dr. Villard explained, “I already have a massive collection of these posters. I just looked through them and thought, ‘Okay, which ones could be modified, so that they keep something of the original spirit, but would be applicable to the

Northwell ICU Nurses Volunteer To Assist Utah Health System In an effort to support fellow health care workers battling coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), 30 Northwell Health nurses answered the call to deploy to Utah to support Intermountain Healthcare. Speaking via Zoom, three intensive care unit (ICU) nurses -- representing Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park and Southside Hospital in Bay Shore – were in unanimous agreement that pitching in to assist their colleagues in support of both COVID-19 and non-COVID patients was the right thing to do. Andrew Roberts, the project manager for emergency deployment at Northwell, said the 30 deployed agreed to work at Intermountain Medical Center over a sixweek period – in groups of 10 over two-week deployments. “Last April, when we were in the epicenter of the COVID outbreak, Intermountain deployed two COVID-19 response teams of 100 staff members to assist New York hospitals,” Mr. Roberts said. “Clearly, now that the surge has subsided in
New York, it’s our time to return the favor. These 30 people left their homes, their families, and their friends. As ICU nurses, they all possess a very specialized set of skills. We are so grateful to them and so proud.” The three nurses who spoke from Utah are: • Madison Montague, RN, cardiothoracic ICU, Lenox Hill Hospital; • Jeffrey Rosa, RN, surgical ICU, LIJ Medical Center; • Shereyah Barbera, RN, ICU, Southside Hospital. Mr. Rosa expressed the feelings of the group best when he said, “In April, during the peak of COVID-19 in New York, we were so overwhelmed with incredibly sick and unstable patients. We saw so many patients take their last breath. These heroes here from Intermountain were among the first I saw that answered the call and came to our aid when we needed it the most. NY Imaging Specialists Welcomes New Physician Charito Love, M.D. Charito Love, M.D. is a board-certified Nuclear Medicine Radiologist. Dr. Love received a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines. After exposure to imaging and therapy of thyroid diseases, she found Nuclear Medicine to be both fascinating and challenging. Dr. Love went on to complete her Nuclear Medicine Residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, New York. Prior to joining NY Imaging Specialists, Dr. Love has been an Attending Physician in the Department of Radiology for the Division of Nuclear Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center. Additionally, she is an Associate Professor in the Department of Radiology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. As an active member of the medical staff, Dr. Love is a member of numerous tumor boards and is constantly being recruited as an imaging specialist for various clinical trials involving the use of F-18 FDG PET/CT in staging and treatment response evaluation. Dr. Love is well-acquainted with clinical trials having participated as principal investigator for an IND approved evaluation of Ga-68 DOTATOC for neuroendocrine tumor (NET) among others. One of Dr. Love’s most
CHARITO LOVE, M.D. notable participations is her close involvement with the clinical trial for Lu-177 DOTATATE therapy of progressing NET which has garnered her many invitations as a guest speaker in national and international medical symposia. More importantly, Dr. Love co-chaired the establishment of ACRACNM-ASTRO-SNMMI practice parameters for Lu-177 DOTATATE therapy in the USA. Additionally, Dr. Love spearheaded the inclusion of a new imaging agent, F-18 Fluciclovine, at Montefiore Medical Center for imaging of patients with biochemical recurrence of prostate cancer. Before she left the institution, she was facilitating the inclusion of new imaging agents, F-18 PSMA and F-18 FES. As an active medical professional, Dr. Love has contributed many articles to several national and international journals as well as co-authored book chapters. She has also has served in various
leadership capacities at the SNMMI, RSNA, ACR, and JRCNMT including having completed a twoyear term as President of the Greater NY Chapter and Delegate for the House of Representatives for SNMMI and RSNA Judge for RadioGraphics. She serves as a board member of the General Clinical Nuclear Medicine Board of the SNMMI, JRCNMT representing the ACR, and the AUC committee for infection imaging. Dr. Love is also active in continuing medical education as a lecturer, reviewer, and author of various CME programs. Dr. Love is fluent in Tagalog and Ilocano.
