The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology

GIRL SCOUTS DEDICATE PAINTED CANS TO KIC - Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter joined Nancy Cochran, Executive Director of Keep Islip Clean, Tom Owens, Commissioner Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs & DPW, Deputy Commissioner Deirdre Whalberg, and members of Girl Scout Troop 1106, for a dedication ceremony to unveil the Scouts’ latest project, a painted can project. The girls of Troop 1106 each decorated their own can that will be placed throughout parks within the Town of Islip. “We’re delighted to partner with the Girls Scouts and KIC by placing these colorful cans throughout our Town. They’re a cheerful reminder to keep our parks clean,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter. Also attending the dedication ceremony was Pat Brinkmann, who supplied the girls with the paint and materials needed to complete the project, and Suffolk County Legislator William Lindsay.

Jason Cohen has been named the new assistant principal of Islip Middle School, replacing Bryan Miltenberg. Since 2006, Cohen had been a teacher at the middle school and Islip High School as well as an athletic trainer at the high school. He previously worked as a student teacher in the Bay Shore School District at Bay Shore Middle School and Fifth Avenue Elementary School, as an athletic trainer in the South Huntington School District, and as an assistant athletic trainer at Molloy College A West Islip resident, he earned his bachelor’s degree in athletic training at Hofstra University, his master’s degree in physical education at Adelphi University and an advanced graduate Certificate in educational leadership from Stony Brook University. “As an educator in the Islip School District for the past 13 years, I am honored to have been chosen as the new assistant principal of the middle school,” Cohen said. “My goal is to deepen and expand the relationships I have formed with students, staff and parents throughout the years and create an inclusive environment while continuing to be an empowering team player that enjoys collaborating with all the stakeholders of the Islip community to benefit all.”

Students Attend LILTA Summer Institute

Islip High School students Lilian Arriaza and Isabella Bentacur Vanegas, both former English Language Learners, were among 13 female Long Island high schoolers recently given the opportunity to attend the LILTA Young Women’s Summer Institute at Stony Brook University as part of a collaboration between the university, Islip’s ENL and World Languages Department, the Long Island Latino Teachers Association and Flutterflies Inc. During their time at the institute, the two

Islip students became familiarized with the college experience as well as careers in the STEAM fields of science, technology, engineering, art and math. Arriaza and Bentacur Vanegas attended numerous workshops and training events tackling subjects such as salary negotiation skills, geology exploration, biometrical engineering, financial aid and writing college admission essays. “Our English Language Learners deserve equitable and inclusive learning opportunities that will prepare them for college,

career readiness and beyond,” said Priscilla Zarate, Islip’s coordinator of ENL and world languages. “By providing these experiences to our students, we are setting them up with pathways for academic success and also helping them bring out those hidden potentials that they may not yet realize they hold within. Through these learning opportunities, our students discovered skills and interests they didn’t realize they had, especially in STEAM.”

The student council at East Islip’s John F. Kennedy Elementary School recently coordinated a Crayola ColorCycle program, with students and teachers collecting used markers rather than

sending them to landfills. The ColorCycle program has repurposed more than 70 tons of expended markers in North America since 2013, utilizing advanced plastic conversion technologies

to create wax compounds for asphalt and roofing shingles as well as to generate electricity for heating homes, cooking food and powering vehicles

TEN YEAR OLD RAISES MONEY - Legislator Steven Flotteron supported his friend, Ten year old Oliver Rivadeneyra, enjoying a cupcake and lemonade at his Islip Terrace home. For the past five years Oliver has run his Lemonade Stand, which he built with his father, to benefit children with cancer at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. He got the idea while watching TV with his grandmother and saw a commercial for St. Jude’s. He has raised nearly $5,000 for the hospital.
