Beginnings Birthdays are beginnings. This is a sentiment I have always held particularly close to my heart, if for no other reason than it allows for the momentary illusion of a fresh start, at least for one day. What evolves beyond that point in time is anyone’s guess of course; but the symbolic turning of the page is one that resonates quite deeply for me. This year’s birthday falls within an interval of time that is especially significant, the start of a completely new chapter in my life. After 13 years as editor of South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers and Seasons Magazine, I will be leaving my position to pursue a new adventure at the close of the month, taking my love of writing to the next level and exploring the vast opportunities that await just around the bend. Change is never easy, least of all for someone with my affinity for routine and structure; but, as with all things, sometimes fate takes a hand and points you in a direction you never thought possible. Time, as we know, is one of life’s most precious commodities. As much as we would like to believe there will always be another chance to embark on a particular journey
or pursue a particular dream, the simple fact is that we can never be certain. The time is now, always. I have countless fond memories of my years working here at the old “South Bay” paper that I grew up reading, which I will touch on in more detail as the weeks progress. For now, though, suffice it to say that I am extremely grateful for the chance I was given to show my worth as a fresh-faced college graduate all those years ago. What began as a first step to “get a foot in the door” turned into a huge portion of my career, during which I was able to grow and flourish. My nearly 700 In Step columns stand as the biggest testament to the incredible support I have received from my co-workers, family and friends - and, perhaps most importantly, from those readers who have turned into loyal followers and fans. You have all come along for this journey, week after week, and for that I am forever thankful. Milestones have come and gone, as the columns have accumulated and the memories have been stored away for safekeeping between the lines of type. Along the way, the
particular numbers have gotten miscalculated and misplaced; but now, as I approach the final stretch, I felt an official “count” was in order. To my surprise - and delight, given how I began this particular selection, I will finish my tenure here with precisely 681 columns - my birthdate {8/16} “boxed,” if you will, for those familiar with gambling terminology. A fitting end, if you ask me. And with that, one more column in the books, three remaining - I would like to ask you, readers, for your feedback on what have been some of your favorites through the years, the topics and tales that stood above the rest. Your input has always been appreciated, and has been noted in many of my narratives over time. The stories may have been my own, but the writing was always for you. I look forward to reading your thoughts, and to taking you on my journey as I continue to contribute columns from time to time to my own personal website, SnapshotsAndSilhouettes.com. ’Til next time, may tomorrow’s birthday be just the beginning of a beautiful new chapter.

As a licensed hair professional, Eileen has a following of paying customers, but her real passion lies with helping those who are not able to afford a haircut or hair process. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: seniors at home, the home confined, hospice, sober houses and those who are differently abled. She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space, and she incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products. Another unique niche that her traveling salon taps into is serving those who may have specific allergies or reactions to different products used in salons. DRI funds will be used to leverage the state’s investment in the LIRR Third Track and Double Track projects by promoting transit development and downtown revitalization adjacent to the Central
Islip rail station. With complete streets and traffic calming, this downtown will become a more inviting and enjoyable area. There are many sites along the downtown Carleton Avenue corridor that are ripe for redevelopment with the advent of sewers, including a potential public/private partnership that would be ideal

operations including how to raise the homerun apple in centerfield. The children also enjoyed batting practice in the Mets batting cages and joined Conforto for lunch in the ballpark. Michael Conforto was so inspired by the spirit of these young patients during their visit that it prompted him to expand his program and initiate visits into the communities, such as the one held today. “Michael’s desire to create special experiences for these children and their families really makes a difference,” said Mark Weinblatt, MD, Chief of Pediatric Hematology/ Oncology at NYU Winthrop and Director of the CCFK. “Children look up to professional athletes and meeting one like Michael Conforto and getting special memorabilia, it renews the vitality of these young patients and that’s so important.” Added Conforto, “It’s a privilege to help these children forget about the rigors of their treatments and just enjoy being kids.” The Cancer Center for Kids at NYU Winthrop
Hospital offers a range of early detection, diagnostic, intervention and treatment services, both inpatient and outpatient, for children’s cancers and blood disorders. Dramatic improvements have been made in pediatric cancer patient survival, with nearly 80 percent of children cured of their malignancies. Each CCFK patient receives the latest treatment regimens, and most participate in national protocols that serve to further the science and treatment of childhood malignancies. Conditions treated at the Center include leukemia and lymphomas; bone, soft tissue and brain tumors; hemophilia; sickle cell disease and more.
NYU Winthrop Hospital Children’s Medical Center offers broadscoped inpatient specialty programs and services. The Medical Center also features a Child Life Program aimed at easing the fears and anxiety of children who are hospitalized, addressing their emotional needs through play, fun-filled activities, education and support. The Children’s Medical Center was recently named to U.S. News & World Report’s 2018-19 Best Children’s Hospitals rankings as one of the best Children’s Hospitals in the NY/Metro area and for demonstrating excellence in the area of Pediatric Diabetes and Endocrinology.

New York Mets star Michael Conforto, a 25-year-old outfielder who was an All-Star last season, recently said that he wanted to lead by example. “If I am going to be a guy who is going to be sticking around,” said Conforto, “I’ve got to step into a little bit more of a leadership role.” While Conforto was talking about his role on the field, he’s been displaying plenty of leadership off
had already hosted young NYU Winthrop patients and their families at Citi Field, but Conforto wanted to do more; he wanted to come and see where the youngsters are being treated and spread sunshine and hope in these important places. “My goal is to bring cheer and inspiration to these young children while also raising the visibility of pediatric cancer and other childhood diseases,” said Conforto. “The Mets have been extremely supportive of my efforts, caring deeply about their communities and helping me to give back. I hope to inspire these young patients to stay determined. If we, as a broader community, stay determined, maybe one day there will be more cures for childhood diseases.” Conforto distributed Mets t-shirts to the pediatric patients and family members. He also handed out pop-up replicas of the Mets home-run apple and presented autographed photos. The event followed on the heels of patients and family members visiting Citi Field last month at Michael Conforto’s invitation. During that outing, the youngsters were given a tour of the stadium and Mets clubhouse, and they were shown scoreboard

Summer Youth Employment Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone recently announced nearly 900 students participated in Suffolk County’s Summer Youth Employment Program, an increase of approximately 100 students from the previous year due to additional funding provided by New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance to divert at-risk youth from gang activity. The Summer Youth Employment Program has been in existence for over 50 years in Suffolk County and provides economically disadvantaged and at-risk youth from across the county with first-time work experience. “It is critical that we keep our students engaged during the summer months and provide them with the tools necessary to succeed,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “This program allows participants to not only earn a wage but to gain experience to put on a resume, develop a strong work ethic and desire to succeed, and attain skills
that will prepare them for joining the workforce once their education is completed. I applaud Governor Cuomo for his leadership and providing the additional funding necessary to be able to serve a greater number of students.” New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance Commissioner Samuel D. Roberts said: “Through Governor Cuomo’s leadership, the state has taken a dynamic approach to combatting gang violence across the state, especially on Long Island, by providing at-risk youth with the opportunities and supportive services they need to succeed. I applaud the Governor and my partners on the local level on prioritizing this initiative and giving children of Long Island a chance at a better tomorrow.” Suffolk County Legislator Monica Martinez said: “As a Suffolk County Legislator, it is my pleasure to not only support but continue expanding
the summer youth employment program. As adults, we need to provide our youth with an opportunity to work so they may build valuable skills, essential employment experience, and develop a sense of professionalism to propel them into being productive members of society. The summer youth employment program not only gives students the understanding and value of money, but it also gives them a sense of what it means to go out and work on a daily basis and to take care of one’s self and family.” Dr. Monique Darrisaw-Akil, Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education, Brentwood Union Free School District said: "These summer jobs represent more than a paycheck for our youth; they represent a chance to learn important career skills, explore new fields, give back to their community and save for school supplies. We are thankful that the Governor and County Executive have continued to invest in
our students by creating more opportunities for our young people to earn while they learn during the summer months." The Suffolk County Department of Labor, Licensing and Consumer Affairs received $1.6 million in funding from New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance to help run the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). An additional $150,000 in funding was made available to supplement the program as part of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s multi-agency plan to reduce gang violence and divert at risk youth away from gang activity. The supplemental funding allowed the program to serve 76 additional youth participants. The additional jobs for at risk youth focused on the communities of Wyandanch, Brentwood and Bellport. The purpose of the Summer Youth Employment Program is to provide young
adults from economically disadvantaged homes and at risk youth, ranging in age from 14 to 21, with the tools and framework necessary for success in their future career paths. This year the program has employed 888 young adults from all across the County. The young workers are working at 75 different worksites including school districts, not for profit organizations and County agencies. The youth workers are working in various seasonal positions such as custodial aides, camp counselors, food service aides, clerical aides and teacher aides. All of the youth working are paid $11 an hour and work 25 hours per week. This year the program runs from July 2nd, 2018 to August 17th, 2018, with Brentwood School District being the exception, running from June 25th, 2018 to August 10th, 2018. Applications for the program open at the end of April and applications are readily available for eligible students at various school districts and the Suffolk
County Department of Labor, Licensing and Consumer Affairs. In order to be eligible for the Summer Youth Employment Program, a participant’s family income must be below the 200% federal poverty level. Automatic eligibility is given to families collecting any sort of Public Assistance including cash grant, food stamps, Medicaid, SSI or HEAP. Out of the 888 youth employed, 772 jobs were created through the summer Temporary Assistance To Needy Family (TANF) program, 76 jobs were created through the Governor’s Office for Gang Prevention, and 40 jobs were created through the Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act (WIOA).
