TAKING A LOOK BACK! In honor of our retro-themed newspaper issue, I decided to spotlight an older article I wrote last year. The article is below: Rebuilding Together L o n g Island is a non-profit 5 0 1 ( c ) ( 3 ) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with disabilities and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economically-disadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons).

Together Long Island has become a well-regarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum! There are a few main ways you can get involved with their organization:

1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. The Importance Of Free Play The National Education Association notes that recess and free play are critical to the development of students in grades pre-K through eighth grade. According to the NEA, recess and free play during the school day encourages interpersonal interactions and problem-solving skills, and such opportunities also can prove beneficial for older students. Despite these benefits, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that 40 percent of schools have reduced

or eliminated recess over the last 20 years in an attempt to increase instructional time for students. While that may be understandable, it ignores the many benefits of recess and free play, which the American Academy of Pediatrics says are crucial to students’ mental, emotional, physical, and social development. In addition, the AAP notes that research has shown a connection between recess/free play and improved performance in the classroom. This is true even for older

students, including high schoolers. Regular breaks from the rigors of the classroom provide adolescent students with opportunities to mentally decompress, potentially improving their focus when classroom sessions resume. Such benefits highlight the important role of free play in the development of students, including older students whose school schedules may no longer include time for free play or recess.

Retire The R*Dmen Committee Presents To Board Of Education On July 30, the Retire the R*dmen Committee presented its case for the removal and replacement of the East Islip School District’s mascot. East Islip’s R*dmen mascot has been a contentious topic within the community for years, but has received increased attention due to the ongoing discussions around racial injustice nationwide and the Washington Football Team’s decision in early July to retire its own Native mascot. In only a few short weeks, the Retire the R*dmen Committee has garnered nationwide support for its cause from a wide range of Native activists, advocacy groups, and tribes, including Suzan Shown Harjo, a Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, an advocate for American Indian rights, and a leader in the decadeslong fight to end the usage of Native mascots, the National Congress of American Indians, and the Shinnecock Indian Nation. Nearly 11,000 individuals from across the country, including both alumni and current East Islip School District students, have signed a petition launched by the group in early June calling for the removal of the East Islip mascot.

Throughout the spring and summer, major corporations, consumer products manufacturers, and professional sports teams alike have been called on to reevaluate and replace their logos and brands based on racial stereotypes. Public schools, funded by taxpayers’ dollars, are facing similar scrutiny from local groups like the Retire the R*dmen Committee as well as from state governments. In 2019, Maine became the first state to pass legislation banning the use of Native American mascots in all public schools; this past month, a bill was introduced in the New York State Senate in an effort to address the use of race-based mascots. Citing studies conducted by researchers from University at Buffalo and UC Berkeley, reports commissioned by the U.S. Department of Education, and position statements from groups like the American Psychological Association, the Retire the R*dmen Committee’s presentation highlighted the negative impacts of the continued exploitation of Native mascots. “The use of [Native] mascots like our own, does great injustices to not only indigenous children, but all children, on all levels,”

said one member of the group. While discussing the harm inflicted by Nativethemed mascots, the Retire the R*dmen Committee noted that “in textbooks and in lesson plans, Native Americans are left in the early 1900s. False narratives and invisibility have harmful, long-term ramifications.” In addition to the removal of East Islip’s current mascot, the group called for the East Islip School District to implement curriculum that accurately educates students about Native American history and contemporary life. Superintendent of Schools John Dolan has expressed his commitment to hearing all sides of the issue, stressing the educational value of the conversation. “The time has arrived to finally have open discourse and debate so we can learn and move forward together. My hope is that we listen to each other and find a solution that brings us together to honor our past and make our future better,” Said Dolan. A group looking to keep the current mascot in place is expected to present their case for keeping the mascot to Superintendent Dolan and the Board during September’s meeting.
